I completely forgot about this show until tonight when I heard Jason Bateman talk about it on the Daily Show. Kellie Martin is so young. Ha, I had limited exposure to tv in the late 80's and I guess this one slipped my mind - intro is familiar, though.
Weird... someone just wrote almost the exact same comment on the first episode of Valerie's Family's page. "Why was it that every film/tv show made from '85 through about '91 took place in a suburb of Chicago?"
@blaqice88 And three of those four were Miller-Boyett productions. My guess is either (a) Chicago was an inexpensive place to film, much like Vancouver has been lately, or (b) either Mr. Miller or Mr. Boyett has a personal tie to Chicago, as with Milwaukee during the Miller-Milkis era.
Just like I remember - no acknowledgement of the fire that destroyed their house 1 week earlier. Everything's all fixed up and better! You'd think they'd at least have some workmen in the house doing the final repairs or something....
@blizzytiger that's because this is the first show of the 3rd season, I'm not sure whats up with the dates here, but this episode aired on 9/21/87. The fire didn't happen until the 3rd episode and aired 10/5/87.
I knew as soon as I bought it from someone that my personally recorded episodes would show up. I went through my episodes recorded from PAX and I found that all of them have the original theme but no title change like you have. They all go under The Hogan Family. These are the ones I recorded myself and I thought I had lost or misplaced.
the near the beginning of the third season of The Golden Girls where they keep a new maid because they think she has mystical abilities and are afraid of her cursing them.
I really liked this series in all of its formats -- "Valerie," "Valerie's Family," and "The Hogan Family." I was disappointed when Valerie Harper left the show, but Sandy Duncan was a great addition to the cast! And that theme song, sung by the incredible Roberta Flack, is awesome!
Not to look like I'm not grateful for the posting of this episode, but does anyone notice that the humor in this ep is much more forced and not nearly as witty as in the VALERIE episodes? So many of the "jokes" were stretched beyond what they needed to be. I love the show even post-VALERIE, but the show was drastically different in tone and in writing when she was fired. There's more of a difference than just the leading star being replaced. Anyone agree?
I have often noticed that. The humor is so sharp in the second season of Valerie. There is a real studio audience that is truly laughing. By the end of season three, it was all laugh track. I have a hard time watching season 4 episodes because of how bad the laugh track is.
Valerie was a continuation of the hilarious ensemble shows like Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda. If they had given in to her suggestions, I have no doubt that Valerie would've been a mainstream classic.
So you see my point. So many do not. They think it's merely a "Valerie" vs. "Sandy" issue when it's not. Don't get me wrong. I didn't like losing the Valerie Hogan character at all. I thought it was callous and insensitive, especially since her family seemed a tad blasé about it. But I think if the same calibre had been maintained with the writing, the show would've maintained its cleverness. Instead it became trite and ordinary and I think that's why it's not popular to merit a DVD release.
Also, I think the writing was dumbed down deliberately. In order for the show to pull off practically ignoring Valerie Hogan's death, it had to become a cartoon. Had it maintained the same realism as in Season 2, the show would've had to do justice to the Valerie Hogan character, which would've made the Val more sympathetic and it would've made it harder for the audience to accept Sandy as the new mom. That's why, after the fire, any references to "mom" was used as a setup for a joke. Tasteless!
I know... "Joey" is coming out (which could not make it past season 2, and several others (ALF, Perfect Strangers) that pretty much sucked are out, but they can't release this? It's ridiculous.
miss this themesong.....'the hub' shows family ties, i am sure this will be back on tv soon:)

I always thought that the baseball whizzing towards the camera at the beginning was interesting, it looks like a 3-D effect.

LOL, is it just me, or does it seem like damn near every 80s sitcom was set in Chicago?
