What a privilege to watch what you were blessed to witness. Thank you so much for your steady video hand. My question is - the upload to Youtube was June 2009, in the midst of the killing drought in Amboseli. Was this filmed quite a bit earlier? Do you know from Amboseli Elephant Research Project just who these eles are? Thanks for sharing on FB, Ann Smith.
eicanfly, like you, I've watched this many times. What strikes me is that the calf's eyes are so amazed at the brightness of the world, and - does he have eyelashes yet?
Next question: does the calf immediate develop smell? (I'm anosmic.) What a world to be born into!
NKaufman, I wish you hadn't gone to whispering; I wanted to hear everything. Thank you so much for filming and posting this great, wondrous event.
I watch this video every month or two ever since I first found it a few years ago & post it regularly on FB. Thank you so much for capturing this event on film while respecting the elephant's privacy during these beautiful moments. THIS clip is how it should beI I saw another elephant birth, captive, It was NOT beautiful, it was heartwrenching the mother was panicking & frantic, every time she tried to help it up he went skidding across the bare concrete floor, slippery w/ afterbirth :(
@eicanfly1 Yes, another almost-tragic elephant birth was the "Miracle Birth" of a baby in Taronga Zoo, Australia. It's obvious, Australia, being very affluent and with only a few Asian elephants at at Perth and Taronga, they love their elephants and take exceptional care of them.
Anyway, the diagnosis of the baby (by one of Germany's elephant experts), eventually named Parthi Harn or "Miracle" in Thai, was that he had died inside its mother. But he was not...
No overnight monitoring, so when the baby came, he SLIPPED out of the mother's reach, between two metal beams as part of the caging. There's noway for its mother to reach him, coax, nudge & clean him like WHAT HAPPEND here on THIS video.
Until the Zoo open, HOURS later, the baby laid helplessly on a wet, cold concrete floor, on one side, with the mother oviously being extremely stressed & agigated, so much so one of the keepers was crying, she said, when she first saw her "unusual behavior."
this is beautiful and amazing, I decided to watch this on mother's day , Im a lil sentimental, but this is truly a wonderous site, to see the concern and love she has for her calf.
Of the many elephant births, this one & "Echo" from Cythia Moss's Amboseli Elephant Project are the most viscerally memorable. This mother's likely between 12-18, very young & inexperienced; you could see her anxiety, as she frantically used her legs, tusks, trunk, & whole body to comfort & help her son. The late Echo, being an experienced 45 year-old mother, when she gave birth to a large boy, allowed the initially crippled baby 4 days to get up ... all by himself, WITHOUT abandoning him ...!
@krugersafarinow yeah the sad thing is the mother was probably so desperate to get her son BECAUSE of those guys filming it. She could probably see them as well as they could and when her son finally came out she was probably thinking:
"GET UP GET UP, PLEASE, PLEASE SON! THERE'RE HUMANS NEARBY! THEY'RE PREDATORS! GET UP SON, GET UP SON! PLEASE GET UP!"
What a beautiful video!!! As i was watching the video i just wanted put my hand in the video and give the lil guy a helping hand. Momma elephant has such a gentle touch with helping her baby.. Wow, just takes your breath away.<3
Ely went away rather young, around 11. He went to Tanzania (from the scratchy info), with another young bull, a bit older... Returning as a big 20 year-old last year to his Amboseli's family range, his missed his mother's passing (old age 65) by some months. He's still growing & he's likely going to be huge bull in his 30s-40s. These are incredibly intelligent & majestic creatures. I have no idea why we humans kill them like we do, esp. these days... when it's not for food like 10,000 years ago.
Echo was a 45 year-old, experienced mother then. That's 20 years ago. So she simply wait patiently for Ely's limps to strenghten, which took 3 days! Less experienced mothers would have abandoned such a baby, caring as elephants generally are, since food and predators are hourly problem for them & mothers and kids who are isolated from the large protective family can die easily. Ely had his first milk after 3 days. His beloved mother, Echo, died last year....
The caring as well as concern of the mother were so vividly displayed: as her little son tried to get up, got tired after a while and simply stopped trying, she'd lower herself to his level, to sooth him, tried kicking away some of the slippery after birth, & doing it many many times within these few contininuous minutes... it's just incredible to witness this kind of deep love, concern, and nurturing a mother elephant has for her newborn, exactly like a new human mother has with her newborn...
@nkaufman I'm sure you've seen the documentary of the late Echo spending 3 days (by the documentarians account) trying to coax her baby son, very much like this male here, to get up. Echo's son was named Ely. Unlike this one, which was just dealing with clumpsy feet next to extra wet soil next to a little lake, Ely's front legs were physically curled-in, at the wrist-area, for us. Some scientists said 'tis because he's a little big, with extra long legs, causing the folding condition...
best elephant birth video EVER. Great quality, beautiful camera work, and the camera "operators" were nice and quiet and not intrusive to the animals. Beautiful.
did anyone else squeal jus a lil when the baby finally stood at the end? lol, i know i did! i actually cannot explain how beautiful this is, especially seein this huge massive elephant with feet that can easily crush anything, gently prod and help her baby and i dont care if im gushin but at 5:57 when she laid down beside him...it's actually beautiful. just beautiful.
Nathan Kaufman, you should be ASHAMED of yourself. People like you are the kind of tourists that Africa and her animals do NOT need. At such a sensitive moment when mother and child need every inch of space and respect, you instruct the ranger to drive forward, and tell him to "Hurry, Hurry!". Do you think that wild places are a ZOO for your own personal entertainment? I am disgusted at your disturbing (quite literal) actions.
Thank you so much for this excellent video! Thanks for your patience while taking it, and then sharing it with us. And you were careful to respect the elephant's space and not startle it too. Well done!
Incredible video!!!! The mother was fortunate she didn't have him in the water because she is wet to the top of her back. It is really neat how she gets down eye to eye with her baby and then gets up slowly showing him how to get up. Really a fascinating video of how the GOD of the universe has instilled in his animals how to care for their babies. Thanks again for the great video.
What an incredible video!! Thank you so much for sharing it with us. It's wonderful that you and your group just happened to pass by the mother elephant at the very moment that she was ready to bring her baby into the world!
