My Uncle Leland Sparks was given a turbine to drive. He was employed by the U.S. government. He said they were wonderful cars and they should have went into production.
It appears to be -- front side -- a 1962 Thunderbird in reverse; hideous, a homely misfit prototype, mechanical aspects aside. It has been photographed over its life much, but, it remains dorky; hm ... patina of age and "provenance" simply cannot transmute it into a beauty, no? LOL
my dad had one. i think he was one of testers that got to drive it for a day or so. and man he said that thing would laaaaaaaaagggggg when you got on the gas youd have to count a 5 second gap to merge or the freeway. i know now why they never caught on but a shame they had almost every one destroyed.
instead of direct transmission, you could place electric engines in the wheel hubs and have the turbine produce DC power stored in capacitors. That way you could drive it today with extreme performace, the turbine could be smaller (peak power demand reduced thanks to capacitors) and the turbines generally (unless you suck up stuff) work for almost forever. At a museum near here we got a Mig-15 with an original engine...it uses gallons of oil but still works :-D
@diverseent: Maybe they were worried about liability, based upon the car' s lack of acceleration, as your anecdotal evidence suggests may have been the case.
@diverseent That's really interesting about the lag, which was true for all turbines in those days, but that problem has since been overcome with variable pitch compressor blades. The real reason they didn't catch on was that they were too expensive and they couldn't get gas mileage up when the price of gas went up.
@sixtiesforever1966 Jay bought this from the Chrysler Museum. There is no need for fellatio when you are a celebrity multimillionaire. Jay has a fabulous car collection.
Jay Lenos closet must be small... nothing but denim shirts and jeans
