@Justbeneathfailure Yes, I agree....that would really make a difference. I noticed that the stems seemed much thinner and weaker than plants grown outside!
I have a couple questions How many seeds should I put in per ceramic container? Also how much light do those Windows get because where I live we don't get too much light in through the windows?
@iamaGod357 Well, I just sprinkled a small pinch of seeds all over the pot....like putting a pinch of salt on mashed taters! My windows don't get much light in the winter either, so I used some cheap flouresant grow lights for sprouting and seeding. In Feb I put them in the window and BOOM! They took off. If you have a garden of any kind, I suggest using that....otherwise you can try this and get a few nice plants! Cheers.
@iamaGod357 PS: please...please...please....check out your local laws. If you're just growing a few plants in the windows...well I don't see how anyone could do something illegal with that. You'll get tons of seeds but that's it. If you're in the USA you can contact your State or Local District attorney. I think in most English speaking countries you'll have the equivalent to that.
@iamaGod357 ok this is a update on everything dealing with this, the guy that made this video has a idea of what to do but not quiet sure, Like where the flower is at. It needs more light than your window, You need to mimic the ideal whether like for instance have your light always 12-24 inches from plant, have some air flow but humid. And DO NOT just spread the seeds all over the pot, The plant's roots for this plant like to grow side ways instead of down, so its best to have there own pot
@iamaGod357 now this is for only indoors, As i like to grow all sorts of stuff indoors since I'm not very fond to pests. I do know what I'm talking about as i too has experienced with these amazing beautiful flowers, but if you are making this plant to produce opium good luck. because you will probably only get as far as the tea, unless you do have all the chem's and other house hold items to produce this, and if the FBI hasn't tracked you down already for researching it on your own computer :)
This is very educating... I have been looking into The poppy plants, their certain chemical properties, and also, They are a plant... I mean people just don't understand anything about plants such as the Poppy, or the Marijuana... Not that i am comparing them. I am going to contact a local lawyer and see if there is any way i can begin growing my own legally. Thanks!
I started growing my poppies indoors about 3 weeks ago. At the present I am using only a single flouresent bulb for the lighting process. It seems as if the plants are not getting either enough nourishment or artificial light because they are only about 2 inches tall and look very frail. I unfortunately too used soil that I found in the garden as opposed to the more sandy stuff. Do you have any tips you could give as to what the problem is or a solution? Is 1 light not enough for starting them?
These are beautiful plants! -really magnificent indoor growth! And this is a great video! -very informative! I found myself applauding at my computer screen several times. Thank you so much for this!!
@drunkenspree Thanks, m8...but there's no need. I'm not in it to grow to start producing something or make some kind of flower business. It's just a hobby. These plants are really interesting in so many ways. I don't want it to become a big job that I invest lots of money into. Nowdays I just grow a few on the window sill or garden. I'd also like to remind EVERYONE who reads/sees this that poppies are illegal in many places. Don't grow them if it's against the law where you live! Cheers, BW
What light cycle did you use when growing with grow lights? I am trying to grow P. somniferum where I live but its just to hot. It was 91 yesterday and they started wilting and some died. So I got some grow lights coming.
@SecretTrollAccount1 Not so good....didn't plant in time. Have only a couple late plants that got bugs from not using new pots....will replant start of winter or next spring.
@patman0250 Yeah, sure outside is best, but some people want inside due to where they live or other situations. This is ....or was...my first try at this and really a learning experience. Bottom line is it can be done, but you have to be willing to invest time and money into a good growing space and nice and powerful lights. This was done with just a cheap investment and some quick thinking. With real money and planning it would be much better.
dud let your plants fall over the stem will bend as they reach up from the sun light and the plants will apppear less strandy and be more stable!! i grow a few in summer in my front garden [which is over shadowed by my building] so i have had similar problems with plants reaching for a light source!! i liked your plant that you said you kept alive during winter mine have always podded off at about 6" tall whenever i tryed that before i'm gonna give it another go this winter
@drgigglesdoescocaine No, I do not smoke opium. I don't recommend you do that either. It's dangerous and very unhealthy. Your name doesn't exactly broadcast discretion either. If you do drugs and you're breaking the law....you'll likely get caught and go to jail/prison. Don't be stupid.
If you're growing poppies there's only 2 ways of going about it, outdoor growing and indoor growing, and if you're growing in doors your going to need a Sun light.
Want to know my advice?, don't bother growing on window sills, it doesn't work, the only type of plants you can grow on window sills are semi light needy plants like Daffodils and Onions. When it comes to growing Opium poppies or for that matter any type of poppy you need a lot of DIRECT sun light to get the best poppies possible.
Now that's not to say that Opium poppies won't grow in window sills, they will, but they will be long, un steady and a sorry sight.
just wondering if its possible to ship some my way man!!im also growing opium poppies but i want to have more strains and selection..hit me up if your down to trade!!
I'd also like to mention that my story was not so successful. The plants only really started to grow when the sun came out in spring. I also didn't have such good ventilation and moisture caused the soil surface to get moldy so I had to put sand on the surface. Eventually bugs ate up the roots which I guessed where due to cold moist conditions in the beginning.
Someone asked about the lights? I don't remember which lights I used other than I went to a pet store and got the "green gro" or something flouresant bulbs. SYLVANIA GRO-LUX is what I believe they are called. Please keep in mind that the only real ligit reason to have them around in the USA is for crafts or for growing SEEDS for use in baking or making more plants for seeds-baking and crafts. Know your local laws.
Great upload thank you! Very informative and helpful, I'm growing poppies from seeds for the first time and without heat pads and uv light sources etc..
They emerged 3 days ago! I'm just a bit concerned about having to thin them down..
Just fingers crossed and wait to see what happens :)
@coldflesh Yup. Already did that 5 or 6 comments ago or did u miss that? I posted the link down below. Regarding a seizure in CA. However, no where does it say under what circumstances you may or may not posses the plant. I'm just happy I don't have to deal with all this bullshit, I miss home a lot...but this draconian police force and relentless and mindless pursuit of harmless people....that I don't miss. Cheers, USA.
@btstv oh u read all that huh? You must have missed the top link of page two, the part where agents seized a poppy field and how they are illegal in the U.S. and all that good stuff, guess you missed the drug scheduling chart too...the part where it says somniferum. (hint: everything under schedule II = felony)
@btstv What type of bulb or lights should I use it would help to know the wattage and name of the lights if possible? Thank you for the upload and keep up the good work with your videos
Holy crap dude!!! yes I know this!!! I can order spores to grow psilocybin producing mushrooms too! or the mescaline producing vareity if you prefer. What about dutura seeds? Yep! I can order those too!! I can order Marijunana seeds too!!! Right off the internetz!! See my point yet.?! THE DEA CAN'T REGULATE MOTHER NATURE BRO...END OF STORY.
@coldflesh Right. But I'm not talking about shady overseas eShopping. I'm talking about very legitimate florists. You can get anything of the net, for sure. But this is not the kind of retailer I'm talking about. These people have been florists for many years and just happen to sell poppies. There are very many of them. The sherrif in Bellingham, Washington told me that he could care less about them. The only case I know about is the one on the DEA link I posted. You've listed nothing.
@coldflesh and yeah, sure we can't regulate nature, but again I'm saying why would a legitimate, large scale florist sell P.Somniferum on his website and have huge quantities planted to be open sold for florist supply? I've asked these people specifically, they've had people call the DEA and police in their area...nothing. If the sherrif says that we can grow them for floral supply, then who do we believe? I guess my point is it is not as black and white as you suggest. But I will research this.
This is worth reading. The DEA has siezed plants and arrested people before. I am going to call the DEA agent mentioned in the article to see if he can clarify this issue for those living in the United States. Replace the underscores with dots to see the page.
HI; I tried to grow some poppies indoors and found that they would germinate but soon would die. ( too much? to little water?) do not use seed starting medium. does not stay wet long enough. I have re-started outside in Feb. and they are doing well. I wanted the stems & pods for flower arrangements and the seeds for muffins. also, spead them out they will take up a lot of space for each plant. somniferum/ are the Illegal ones. look for heirloom Poppies.
@sparrowlink Seriously, somniferum are NOT illegal...not even in the USA. They grow wild in many places. If you scratch them to get opium this act is illegal and the substance is regulated. It takes too many plants to make for one practical illegal use of opium harvested. You can call the FDA and DEA and ask them about the status. Many flower companies and gardeners grow poppies.
@btstv You are terribly mis-informed. Planting, possesing, or cultivating any variety of Papaver Somniferum is ABSOLUTELY ILLEGAL IN THE U.S. The plants themselves, even before any harvesting or refining of any kind are considered a schedule II substance under federal law, which is in the same category as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines. Posession of the seeds is not illegal, but planting them can land you up to 5 years in prison even on a first time offense. Be smart.
@coldflesh You may be correct, however I have my doubts. What I am certain of is that everyone has their individual responsibility to know and follow the law where they live. I live in E.Europe and in my country, not only is it legal but many people grow them in their gardens, usually to make tea and harvest seeds for bakery items. However, the ONLY WAY TO BE CERTAIN is to contact local government officials. You are correct in that U MUST KNOW THE LAW before you're charged with a crime! Cheers.
@coldflesh If you're correct, can you please supply the source of your info? Many many flower companies sell Somniferum poppies online. There are SEVERAL in the USA. Here's just one example, why is the DEA not shutting them down now? Look this up with dot-com at the end.
@btstv Why arent they shut down? The same reason there isnt a war on "jimson weed", or woodrose, or every other plant or seed that produces some form of drug or psychotropic substance...it's simply impossible to regulate them all. Just contact your local Sheriff and shoot the word Papaver Somniferum up the chain of cammond and see what comes back down. Go ahead and plant a big'ol garden of em in your backyard and see what happens. The DEA doesnt care about seeds...just the end result. Be smart.
@coldflesh Well, now you're generalizing. I gave one example of just one very large business which operates quite legally and openly. If they (w-poppyworld-com) were growing pot plants instead of poppies, they'd be shut down and raided immediately. They've invested a great deal of time and money in what is a legal business and I can't imagine that they did not research the legalities of growing somniferum. It also grows wild in many places. Former nieghbor in WA also grew them with no probs.
@btstv generalizing what? I know damn well they are illegal in the United States. Point blank, period, end of story. I'm not gonna sit here and write you a freakin research article complete with cited sources. Marijuana is illegal, but I can damn well order those seeds to. DEA doesnt care who is buying seeds, they care who is growing somniferum, harvesting opium and refining it into morphine and heroin.
@coldflesh Generalizing with other plants, is what I mean. If you bothered to look, you'd see that the retailer I mentioned sells entire plants, that's stems and pods. They supply a variety of dried flowers including P.Somniferum. They say that their plants are not for consumption, but for flower arrangments and they are one of 5 large and very public retailers. Are you saying that no law enforcement agency has "gotten around" to charging them and arresting them for openly admiting they sell it?
@coldflesh By the way, I'm not even trying to make a point here. I'm asking you to show me any reference on any law enforcement website from a sherrif's dept to the DEA that explicitly states that you cannot grow nor possess P.Somniferum plants for the purpose of seeds or for flower arrangements or other enjoyment. The legal businesses that do sell are all either food business or florists. Otherwise, shame on US law for ruining the lives of harmless people. I live in a free country, do you?
@coldflesh I respect the fact that you encourage others to know the law, but you should do the same. As far as being smart goes, I'm fine because I live in E.Europe and in my particular country it's quite legal to have if you don't attempt to extract opium. Police here would think it's silly to go after such people anyway and wouldn't waste their energy on it. However, I agree that if you grow this YOU BETTER KNOW YOUR LAWS. If you do get into trouble, you'll only have yourself to blame.
@utuberocker40 Your question is incomplete. It IS ILLEGAL TO GROW THEM AND POSSESS THEM in many places. I can't give you legal advice. You should ask your local district attorney or other legal professional in your area. I can tell you my opinion only and that is that I believe that many European countries (including where I live) allow the personal cultivation of poppy plants, but in those same countries slicing poppy pods for the harvesting of opium latex is ILLEGAL, usually.
@utuberocker40 Well, in my country, these flowers are totally legal. Many people cook with them and use the seeds for cooking and make tea from them. In the old days people used to give poppy tea or poppy juice for teething. We still give it to babies sometimes (some people outside our country think this is crazy) but we manage just fine and no children have gotten "addicted" to tea. I grow them just for fun, but many people we know in Ukraine grow them for people who are sick. Cheers.
@sparklerbombg It takes at least a few months, usually....depends on many factors. Cool air, lots of sun, good DRAINING soil.....and it could be really fast!
@sparklerbombg it takes about 8 weeks for it from seed to full blown, ive been told, if u get any info about them can u send me a message, u wont get much help on this video, only good for looking at them, he doesnt help u!!
@Mastanehable Hey, you seem like a nice person, but I strongly do not recommend putting up your email address. I don't give mine out to ANYONE but close family members and very close friends. Don't take it the wrong way, but lets communicate here or with the YouTube private message if you like. I'm removing your email address from the comments, ok? CHeers.
@btstv Thank you man for calling me a nice person. You are a very nice man to give such a good information to people. So please remove my mail address if you dont want to contact me. To be honest i dont know how to work with Youtube private message. So i can ask my question's here. So as you mention in your video you grow this plant for the seeds and flowers. I have respect for your words. at this moment my little poppi's doing very good. My question is that maybe you know and you can answer me
@btstv Here is my question. When is the best time to cut the pods? And how many times i can cut one pod? The country where i live is not illegal to have it in your own home. And as far as you dont sell it it's allowed to have and use it for youself. i'll be appriciat if you answer me.
Very nice Video. I have an question, so kind of you to answer me. Some one sent me the seeds of Afghanistan poppy from Badakhshan in Afghanistan. I live in Europe. And wanna grow them indoor. When is the best time to plant the seeds? Now we are in the end of January. My appartment is warm. and i can make it warmer with light. But we have no sunshine in the west of Europ.
@Mastanehable They like it cooler, not warmer, it seems. Now is the time to plant. You can also plant in pots and place them outside in Feb or plant immediately after the snow melts. I do use a dome for humidity at first, but I don't use any heat. When the sun hits them in the spring, they really explode! Cheers.
@btstv Thank you for answer. I planted some seeds weeks ago. And since 2 dayes ago i they started to grow. But they are very weak and thiny. How often should i water them? I actually seat the pot close to the heat center. But as you said they like it cooler i removed the pots. It's amazing man. Can't wait haha.
@Mastanehable I was using peat pellets and I just sprayed mine and kept them moist. I used a covered clear plastic lid to retain the moisture while they are thin and whispy like that. They can easily dry up at this stage. Light is what they crave, not heat. Of course, you want to avoid moldy areas as well, but near a windowsill is good as you get a cool spot with sun. Just bide your time and keep close care of them at this point. I highly reccomend some of "exjordanary"s videos on growing.
@btstv Ok good information. As i followed your adviced looks like that they are feelling better. But they are still thin. I planted some of them outside. However last night was rainy but they are donig fine. And i have some other questions that dont wanna ask here. This is so kind of you if you leave me an mail address, so that i can ask my questions. And also i took some pics of them. I´ll send them. So if you see the pics maybe you can give me better advice. Best regards.
@Mastanehable Did I give u email? I haven't got any email from you, but no worries. You can use that or use the mssg service on utube if it's better. They are thin and wispy for awile...they will also "collapse" unable to hold their wieght, but just ignore it and keep treating them as usual. They will just start growing up from the point they fell down. Strongly suggest u see exjordinary's vids as well....
@btstv Thx man for your great advice. My Poppy's doing fine now. Amazing i just wait for warm weather then i bring them outside. Actually week ago i planted one of them outside. Everything was ok then suddenly weather started to freez, and unfortunatly the poppy dead. So i wait for better weather. Here in west europe was nice weather for awhile and suddenly turned to fucking cold now. So when i bring them outside in spring should i hold them in pots or just plant them in the yard?
@Mastanehable I'd plant some in the yard as well...but if you really want to be safe just wait till what you think is the very last frost and then plant in the yard in various places. Do not bury the seeds. Just put them on the surface and sprinkle with a bit of dirt or just rake them a bit.
@weeleon81 These poppies are of the same genus and species. These plants grow wild. However, harvesting opium is illegal in most western nations. This is done by scoring the seed pods at various times. Possession of the plants is not generally illegal in the US, but if you try to harvest opium it is likely a crime. It would take several square meters of plants to harvest opium to use for "recreation" or medical use more than one time...if that. This is my authorities don't focus on it.
I didn't use any heat mat. I just more or less set it up to turn on after we went to bed, around 11pm to 12midnite. I did use a little plastic dome thing for germination in peat. My plants did great until they got some kind of infestation by June or so, then they started getting sickly. Yes yes yes, you can grow them, but nothing substitutes outdoors. If you get real strong lights and all that, it'll work fine, but expect a big electric bill! (and only for a few plants)
@weeleon81 I don't "grow opium" and ain't no way I'm going to harvest some (illegal) and send you some (illegal). What exactly is the benefit for me in breaking the law to send you an illegal substance?
In any case, if you want to take the law into your own hands....best of luck. I don't condone anything illegal. Poppy tea is still legal in some parts of Europe and other parts of the world. You are responsible for your own actions and the consequences that will arise. Just grow, nothing else.
@weeleon81 Understood. Seriously, seeds are easy and quite legal to get. You can even just go to the grocery and get them, at least some of them will plant. Otherwise there are a lot of online merchants and ebayers. Just look around for some good flower stores online. It's all up to you. Cheers.
@btstv Very nice Video.
Do you use seedling heat mat for germ? What day nite cycle should I run 18/6, 15/9? Need to set light timers for this. Do you use humidity dome for germ?
Woah. Hang on. I'm not here to make some kind of political statement about pot or anything for that matter. I'm just here trying to grow flowers. If they're legal where you are, great....use them however the law will allow. I'm not trying to promote any lifestyle at all. Furthermore, you're contradicting yourself. If you have a NEED, then you take (or grow) medicine. I have no desire nor medical need to grow or consome marijuana. If you do, great, but growing it for growing it sake isn't medical.
Your Opium poppy looks just like the old fashion poppy of American gardens. The different varieties you show look like the same poppy as is found in American seed catalogs. What's the difference? I will note our leaves are a bit fuzzy. Yours seemed smooth like lettuce. Otherwise the flower and seed pod look identical.
@maclovindotca Try LEDs. They produced plants last winter with internodes that in some cases were not just closer but too close - internodes piled on top of each other. I switched to sun light and it took them a while to adjust and stretch out to normal length. This year I'll add some flour. curly and see if if all evens out. Or I may try MH and LED's. I'm not sure. But LEDs do work. They just have to be close because they do not penetrate. But with no heat production close is OK.
@okydokysmoky They just DIE in winter, m8...and then they regrow wild again! If you leave some pods alone or dump some of the pods around the ground where they grow....they will reappear again like weeds next year! :D
Sorry. Typo. I meant get your seeds from "Exjordinary" Jordan, Izmir Poppy and Spice, and even eBay. Just type in "Poppy seeds". Also, you can even try going up to the spice rack and using poppy seeds from your grocer! Not sure what you'll get, but hey! It could be fun! Remember, most of central and northern US and Canada have great climate and soil for poppies so have fun experiementing. REMEMBER TO CHECK LOCAL LAWS! Don't get in trouble just because you want a hobby. Cheers.
@N1ck1Sk123 Somebody asked that already! :D Seriously, you can either order them from various flower shops and seed vendors. Just google "poppy seeds" or try "Izmir Farms" or "exjordanary" or even try using some pricey poppy seeds from your local grocer. Even if they sterilize them some of them will grow. Most places it's perfectly legal to grow poppies for ornimentals and harvest seeds (without cutting the pods) but you should check your local laws.
@000Winter000 depends what soil ur using and other things. Possibly too much water. You should get a jewlers specticle and look at the soil and roots if they get sick....you'll often see critters in the soil. BTW, since when is just growing plants illegal in Canada? Izmir farms has a huge bunch of poppies and they also grow wild. They aren't pot plants, they're poppies. Society is getting crazy.
People should have the choice to put anything they want in there body, and you should be allowed to cultivate any plant you wish.
I mean Im sure you know what happens when you slice the pods of those poppies.
Im sure you know which is less harmful to the body, cannabis or opium?
I find it crazy that I could grow poppies in my backyard and my ignorant neighbors wouldn't know what I was doing, but If they saw a cannabis plant they would immediately call the cops.
@DrPsilocybin well, m8...that's just how it goes. Pot got a lot of attention in the 60s and 70s and scared the shit out of old people. However, you can see legal changes slowly occurring as the old folks leave politics for retirement homes. You can see that in the "norml" website (google it). I don't smoke pot at all, but I agree we need to change things. People do get addicted to drugs, but the problems come from the legal side, not addiction. Anyway, know your local laws before you experiment.
@DrPsilocybin And, yes...I totally agree with you. Just remember it's a surreal society you live in there in the US, and people call the cops for anything wierd. Both are "drugs" no matter how you look at it, and certainly opium or morphine is more dangerous than pot. People need to show a legitimate legal front for this stuff to change. We have a war on our own people and we send them mixed messages. There r pills for "late-shift disorder" but they'll prison you for mokin a jernt. Life is hard.
@74tripkid Just regular old poppy seeds. You can get them from lots of places. You can use spice rack poppy seeds. Also, google: Izmir seed and spice, exjordinary, or go to ebay and look up poppy seeds. Please remember that poppy plants may be restricted. For sure if you cut them for latex in almost all places it would be considered illegal. Seeds are for growing and getting more seeds only. Cheers.
@74tripkid seeds of the most successful and sturdy were the "pink dawn" variety. You can find these all over. Get your seeds from "Exjorinary" or Izmir Spice Company in Canada. Cheers.
Oh, one more thing....some of you have asked me about lighting. I just went on instinct. The lamps I have are cheap "lizard lamps"...specifically: Sylvania Gro-lux F18W.
Another thing to mention is that DRAINAGE is important. These plants create a lost of waste in the soil and you must drain them well and make sure the water flows thru...otherwise it'll start to get nasty and little critters may come along.
For more info on poppy history, gardening, chemistry, and legal issues I suggest this book on poppy gardening in this torrent listed below. Please seed it if you download it. Cheers.
Go to isohunt website and type in "hydroponic poppy" and you should get a pdf torrent called "Hydroponic poppy gardening" by Buttweasel.
Remember, any information provided by me or any sources listed is to be used RESPONSIBLY AND LEGALLY. Know your local laws and abide by them! Knowlege is power, use it well.
transplanting is rough on poppies, but if you take the whole mess out of the smaller pot without disturbing it's shape and bury it in the larger pot that would be the best idea.
Your video is extremely helpful to me.I am growing Poppies indoors. my poopies are about 5 inches tall. is it a good idea to trans plant my plants into a bigger pot. My plants are growing in small pots. Please respond.
what if i grow under 1000w hps?has it got the same needs as canabis? like do i need to switch light cycles?do i need to change nutes when/if i need to change light cycles?id like to know this,i live in canada, and can only grow in summer
@D3V1ANT1 Look mate, I'm not a pro-grower but I can tell you my exp. I left the lights on ALL THE TIME. Canabis is a whole different plant, but all plants have basic similar needs. Poppies seem to like COOLER temps overall, and Canada is great for poppies. Do a search for Izmir Poppy and Spice and you'll see how well poppies grow in Canada! I'd feel much more comfortable about growing poppies in Canada than in the states too. Plant in the fall like crazy, then they'll come up in spring. Cheers.
@D3V1ANT1 Wanted to reply to you again. It occured to me that at some point I did put a timer on my lights eventually. I usually had them turn on just as we were in bed and likely asleep (12am to 1am) and then turn off around when we got up to work. This way they still had SOME light from ambient light thru windows and such, but there was still a kind of "cycle" and a period where photosynthisis would not be so intense. It's also worth mentioning that I used lights mostly in the early stages.
@tmd004 Yes, this sounds like it's important! I honestly don't know that stuff. I'm way amatuer...however, I'm guessing you're talking about specs on the lights? Lumens per m2 sounds like intensity you'd read from a light meter also....am I right? I can tell you something obvious, the lpm are much higher on top than below! Seriously, I'll look into this a bit deeper. I also had soil issues.
unless the seedlings experience a real strong frost, no worries. Sprout indoor, move em outdoor. "Exjordanary" has a really good planting vid. Outdoors are always best if you have the option. Root structure is very involved and fine, and in a pot its not uncommon that pests nibble on the roots in the warmer months. Just care for them like you would any small plants. Take measures against slugs and such. Again, check out Exjordanary's vid.
Someone I know has just planted some seeds...they started them off indoors and have just sprouted! They look strong and healthy and is transplanting some of them now outdoors (end April) for the warmer months! Will they survive?
yes ur all right in the fact that certainly outdoor is preferable to indoor, particularly for this plant. But if you invest the care, time, and money along with attention to detail it's no problem.
I planted several different types and just stuck with what seemed to like indoors the best. These plants are all now full of blooms and pods. Like "Exjordinary" said, you have to just experiment and see what the plants like. These plants grew with really minimal care, the wrong soil, and barely any lighting and they STILL grew decently.
I used totally artificial light durring a dark and cold winter. Once March rolled around I put them in the window and they really took off just with the morning light. If I'd spent real money on the lights and such, they'd be in really spectacular shape.
cuz it needs more of a hard soil (clay like ) which can hold moist for relatively long time as opposed to potting soils. the soil has to have alkaline ph. acidic soil will not respond well. basically a lot of fresh and dry air will show u a significant change in the growth pattern. dont forget if u live in a city with too much heat, or on contrary too much cloud or humidity, dont bother thinking about it. but if u live in a place like Denver, definitely go for it. it shall not turn u down...
ok brother let me tell u something. when I was a kid I used to see my dad growing a lot off poppy plants and harvesting it (tremendous amounts like kilos) back in my motherland afghanestan. well since I live in seattle I really wanted to use my fathers legacy to harvest some opium indoors but it didnt turn out well. ok firs of all u gotta consider that this plant best grows and flowers on mountains about 2000-3000 meters of sea level. 2nd the regular potting soil is no good for it
Yes, your poppies should "spring back". At least that's the experience that I had. The little sprouts seem too weak to hold up there own or they don't get roots deep enough, perhaps. Are you planting in peat-pellets or just plain old dirt?
thanks for sharing. perhaps you can lend some advice--- my poppies are just starting to sprout but when they reached nearly two inches tall they all fell over. their leaves are green and healthy looking, but they don't seem to be growing anymore. do you suppose they might spring back up?
@lacacti - That's PERFECTLY normal. The reason they do that is to create flexibility for themselves for when they get bigger and their pods grow, and become top-heavy. When the sprouts fall over, they then start to grow straight up from there. Leaving a piece of stem laying sideways on the ground which will make it so the stems won't snap when the wind blows later on. For more info, see my "HOW TO GROW POPPIES.." video here on Youtube. This video here is actually a "Video response" to it. Thanks
you need a breeze. strengthens and thickens the stems
Justbeneathfailure 1 week ago
@Justbeneathfailure Yes, I agree....that would really make a difference. I noticed that the stems seemed much thinner and weaker than plants grown outside!

how often did you water them?
iamaGod357 2 months ago
I have a couple questions How many seeds should I put in per ceramic container? Also how much light do those Windows get because where I live we don't get too much light in through the windows?
iamaGod357 3 months ago
@iamaGod357 Well, I just sprinkled a small pinch of seeds all over the pot....like putting a pinch of salt on mashed taters! My windows don't get much light in the winter either, so I used some cheap flouresant grow lights for sprouting and seeding. In Feb I put them in the window and BOOM! They took off. If you have a garden of any kind, I suggest using that....otherwise you can try this and get a few nice plants! Cheers.
btstv 3 months ago
@btstv oops....forgot to check spelling. Don't forget that too!
btstv 3 months ago
@btstv how far away did you put the lights? and can the plants flower with just fluorescent lights indoors ?
iamaGod357 2 months ago
@iamaGod357 PS: please...please...please....check out your local laws. If you're just growing a few plants in the windows...well I don't see how anyone could do something illegal with that. You'll get tons of seeds but that's it. If you're in the USA you can contact your State or Local District attorney. I think in most English speaking countries you'll have the equivalent to that.
btstv 3 months ago
@btstv hi I already did that can you answer my question though? I'm also wondering how often did you water them?
iamaGod357 2 months ago
@iamaGod357 ok this is a update on everything dealing with this, the guy that made this video has a idea of what to do but not quiet sure, Like where the flower is at. It needs more light than your window, You need to mimic the ideal whether like for instance have your light always 12-24 inches from plant, have some air flow but humid. And DO NOT just spread the seeds all over the pot, The plant's roots for this plant like to grow side ways instead of down, so its best to have there own pot
CALIKINGAKACUSH 1 month ago

Thanks!

btstv 4 months ago
I started growing my poppies indoors about 3 weeks ago. At the present I am using only a single flouresent bulb for the lighting process. It seems as if the plants are not getting either enough nourishment or artificial light because they are only about 2 inches tall and look very frail. I unfortunately too used soil that I found in the garden as opposed to the more sandy stuff. Do you have any tips you could give as to what the problem is or a solution? Is 1 light not enough for starting them?

@brunohale , you used soil from your garden? you shoulda used compost from a garden centre, thats where your going wrong

Cheers, BW

patman0250 8 months ago
@patman0250 Yeah, sure outside is best, but some people want inside due to where they live or other situations. This is ....or was...my first try at this and really a learning experience. Bottom line is it can be done, but you have to be willing to invest time and money into a good growing space and nice and powerful lights. This was done with just a cheap investment and some quick thinking. With real money and planning it would be much better.

drgigglesdoescocaine 7 months ago
If you're growing poppies there's only 2 ways of going about it, outdoor growing and indoor growing, and if you're growing in doors your going to need a Sun light.
MarvelLegendsXI 9 months ago
Want to know my advice?, don't bother growing on window sills, it doesn't work, the only type of plants you can grow on window sills are semi light needy plants like Daffodils and Onions. When it comes to growing Opium poppies or for that matter any type of poppy you need a lot of DIRECT sun light to get the best poppies possible.
Now that's not to say that Opium poppies won't grow in window sills, they will, but they will be long, un steady and a sorry sight.

Know your local laws.

coldflesh 11 months ago
@coldflesh Right. But I'm not talking about shady overseas eShopping. I'm talking about very legitimate florists. You can get anything of the net, for sure. But this is not the kind of retailer I'm talking about. These people have been florists for many years and just happen to sell poppies. There are very many of them. The sherrif in Bellingham, Washington told me that he could care less about them. The only case I know about is the one on the DEA link I posted. You've listed nothing.
btstv 11 months ago
@coldflesh and yeah, sure we can't regulate nature, but again I'm saying why would a legitimate, large scale florist sell P.Somniferum on his website and have huge quantities planted to be open sold for florist supply? I've asked these people specifically, they've had people call the DEA and police in their area...nothing. If the sherrif says that we can grow them for floral supply, then who do we believe? I guess my point is it is not as black and white as you suggest. But I will research this.

sparrowlink 1 year ago
HI; I tried to grow some poppies indoors and found that they would germinate but soon would die. ( too much? to little water?) do not use seed starting medium. does not stay wet long enough. I have re-started outside in Feb. and they are doing well. I wanted the stems & pods for flower arrangements and the seeds for muffins. also, spead them out they will take up a lot of space for each plant. somniferum/ are the Illegal ones. look for heirloom Poppies.
sparrowlink 1 year ago
@sparrowlink Seriously, somniferum are NOT illegal...not even in the USA. They grow wild in many places. If you scratch them to get opium this act is illegal and the substance is regulated. It takes too many plants to make for one practical illegal use of opium harvested. You can call the FDA and DEA and ask them about the status. Many flower companies and gardeners grow poppies.
btstv 1 year ago
@btstv You are terribly mis-informed. Planting, possesing, or cultivating any variety of Papaver Somniferum is ABSOLUTELY ILLEGAL IN THE U.S. The plants themselves, even before any harvesting or refining of any kind are considered a schedule II substance under federal law, which is in the same category as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamines. Posession of the seeds is not illegal, but planting them can land you up to 5 years in prison even on a first time offense. Be smart.
coldflesh 11 months ago
@coldflesh You may be correct, however I have my doubts. What I am certain of is that everyone has their individual responsibility to know and follow the law where they live. I live in E.Europe and in my country, not only is it legal but many people grow them in their gardens, usually to make tea and harvest seeds for bakery items. However, the ONLY WAY TO BE CERTAIN is to contact local government officials. You are correct in that U MUST KNOW THE LAW before you're charged with a crime! Cheers.
btstv 11 months ago
@coldflesh If you're correct, can you please supply the source of your info? Many many flower companies sell Somniferum poppies online. There are SEVERAL in the USA. Here's just one example, why is the DEA not shutting them down now? Look this up with dot-com at the end.
poppypodworld
btstv 11 months ago
@btstv Why arent they shut down? The same reason there isnt a war on "jimson weed", or woodrose, or every other plant or seed that produces some form of drug or psychotropic substance...it's simply impossible to regulate them all. Just contact your local Sheriff and shoot the word Papaver Somniferum up the chain of cammond and see what comes back down. Go ahead and plant a big'ol garden of em in your backyard and see what happens. The DEA doesnt care about seeds...just the end result. Be smart.
coldflesh 11 months ago
@coldflesh Well, now you're generalizing. I gave one example of just one very large business which operates quite legally and openly. If they (w-poppyworld-com) were growing pot plants instead of poppies, they'd be shut down and raided immediately. They've invested a great deal of time and money in what is a legal business and I can't imagine that they did not research the legalities of growing somniferum. It also grows wild in many places. Former nieghbor in WA also grew them with no probs.
btstv 11 months ago
@btstv generalizing what? I know damn well they are illegal in the United States. Point blank, period, end of story. I'm not gonna sit here and write you a freakin research article complete with cited sources. Marijuana is illegal, but I can damn well order those seeds to. DEA doesnt care who is buying seeds, they care who is growing somniferum, harvesting opium and refining it into morphine and heroin.
coldflesh 11 months ago
@coldflesh Generalizing with other plants, is what I mean. If you bothered to look, you'd see that the retailer I mentioned sells entire plants, that's stems and pods. They supply a variety of dried flowers including P.Somniferum. They say that their plants are not for consumption, but for flower arrangments and they are one of 5 large and very public retailers. Are you saying that no law enforcement agency has "gotten around" to charging them and arresting them for openly admiting they sell it?
btstv 11 months ago
@coldflesh By the way, I'm not even trying to make a point here. I'm asking you to show me any reference on any law enforcement website from a sherrif's dept to the DEA that explicitly states that you cannot grow nor possess P.Somniferum plants for the purpose of seeds or for flower arrangements or other enjoyment. The legal businesses that do sell are all either food business or florists. Otherwise, shame on US law for ruining the lives of harmless people. I live in a free country, do you?
btstv 11 months ago
@coldflesh I respect the fact that you encourage others to know the law, but you should do the same. As far as being smart goes, I'm fine because I live in E.Europe and in my particular country it's quite legal to have if you don't attempt to extract opium. Police here would think it's silly to go after such people anyway and wouldn't waste their energy on it. However, I agree that if you grow this YOU BETTER KNOW YOUR LAWS. If you do get into trouble, you'll only have yourself to blame.
btstv 11 months ago
growing them isnt illegal, is it?
utuberocker40 1 year ago
@utuberocker40 Your question is incomplete. It IS ILLEGAL TO GROW THEM AND POSSESS THEM in many places. I can't give you legal advice. You should ask your local district attorney or other legal professional in your area. I can tell you my opinion only and that is that I believe that many European countries (including where I live) allow the personal cultivation of poppy plants, but in those same countries slicing poppy pods for the harvesting of opium latex is ILLEGAL, usually.
btstv 1 year ago
@btstv i meant its not illegal for ornamental purposes!, why have u grown them then?, why are you allowed to?
utuberocker40 1 year ago
@utuberocker40 Well, in my country, these flowers are totally legal. Many people cook with them and use the seeds for cooking and make tea from them. In the old days people used to give poppy tea or poppy juice for teething. We still give it to babies sometimes (some people outside our country think this is crazy) but we manage just fine and no children have gotten "addicted" to tea. I grow them just for fun, but many people we know in Ukraine grow them for people who are sick. Cheers.

Mastanehable 1 year ago
@Mastanehable They like it cooler, not warmer, it seems. Now is the time to plant. You can also plant in pots and place them outside in Feb or plant immediately after the snow melts. I do use a dome for humidity at first, but I don't use any heat. When the sun hits them in the spring, they really explode! Cheers.
btstv 1 year ago
@btstv Thank you for answer. I planted some seeds weeks ago. And since 2 dayes ago i they started to grow. But they are very weak and thiny. How often should i water them? I actually seat the pot close to the heat center. But as you said they like it cooler i removed the pots. It's amazing man. Can't wait haha.
Mastanehable 1 year ago
@Mastanehable I was using peat pellets and I just sprayed mine and kept them moist. I used a covered clear plastic lid to retain the moisture while they are thin and whispy like that. They can easily dry up at this stage. Light is what they crave, not heat. Of course, you want to avoid moldy areas as well, but near a windowsill is good as you get a cool spot with sun. Just bide your time and keep close care of them at this point. I highly reccomend some of "exjordanary"s videos on growing.
btstv 1 year ago
@btstv Ok good information. As i followed your adviced looks like that they are feelling better. But they are still thin. I planted some of them outside. However last night was rainy but they are donig fine. And i have some other questions that dont wanna ask here. This is so kind of you if you leave me an mail address, so that i can ask my questions. @Mastanehable Did I give u email? I haven't got any email from you, but no worries. You can use that or use the mssg service on utube if it's better.

Mastanehable 1 year ago
@Mastanehable I'd plant some in the yard as well...but if you really want to be safe just wait till what you think is the very last frost and then plant in the yard in various places. Do not bury the seeds. Just put them on the surface and sprinkle with a bit of dirt or just rake them a bit.

death7metal7girl7 1 year ago
is that the poppies that make opium?
weeleon81 1 year ago
@weeleon81 These poppies are of the same genus and species. These plants grow wild. However, harvesting opium is illegal in most western nations. This is done by scoring the seed pods at various times. Possession of the plants is not generally illegal in the US, but if you try to harvest opium it is likely a crime. It would take several square meters of plants to harvest opium to use for "recreation" or medical use more than one time...if that. This is my authorities don't focus on it.
btstv 1 year ago
@btstv er...."why" authorities don't focus on it.
btstv 1 year ago
I didn't use any heat mat. I just more or less set it up to turn on after we went to bed, around 11pm to 12midnite. I did use a little plastic dome thing for germination in peat. My plants did great until they got some kind of infestation by June or so, then they started getting sickly. Yes yes yes, you can grow them, but nothing substitutes outdoors. If you get real strong lights and all that, it'll work fine, but expect a big electric bill! (and only for a few plants)
btstv 1 year ago
@btstv so u grow opium? wanna send me a little bit to try?
weeleon81 1 year ago
@weeleon81 I don't "grow opium" and ain't no way I'm going to harvest some (illegal) and send you some (illegal). What exactly is the benefit for me in breaking the law to send you an illegal substance?
In any case, if you want to take the law into your own hands....best of luck. I don't condone anything illegal. Poppy tea is still legal in some parts of Europe and other parts of the world. You are responsible for your own actions and the consequences that will arise. Just grow, nothing else.

@btstv Fair play... just a case of dont ask dont get... im well aware of the legalities of it but dont really give a shit

your plants need more light, theyre not supposed to be that tall
redLG27 1 year ago
Your Opium poppy looks just like the old fashion poppy of American gardens. The different varieties you show look like the same poppy as is found in American seed catalogs. What's the difference? I will note our leaves are a bit fuzzy. Yours seemed smooth like lettuce. Otherwise the flower and seed pod look identical.

They certainly prefer real sunlight, but mine grew quite well in the earlier stages durring the middle of the winter. Cheers.

My experience with growing poppies indoors is that they HATE artificial light, except for a powerful HPS light.
maclovindotca 1 year ago
@maclovindotca Try LEDs. They produced plants last winter with internodes that in some cases were not just closer but too close - internodes piled on top of each other. I switched to sun light and it took them a while to adjust and stretch out to normal length. This year I'll add some flour. curly and see if if all evens out. Or I may try MH and LED's. I'm not sure. But LEDs do work. They just have to be close because they do not penetrate. But with no heat production close is OK.

@PQRLOVE Sorry for the late reply...but this is definately an idea worth looking into. Cheers.

Do these plants have to go dormant over a winter or can the dormant stage be skipped?
okydokysmoky 1 year ago
@okydokysmoky They just DIE in winter, m8...and then they regrow wild again! If you leave some pods alone or dump some of the pods around the ground where they grow....they will reappear again like weeds next year! :D

so how often do you harvest these plants or are they for a hobby? how long until the pods are ripe
itjamesisaakfriesen 1 year ago
@000Winter000 hey man are these poppy plants non-toxic or not i also live in canada
itjamesisaakfriesen 1 year ago
could you harvest these pods and get a opium buzz or are these non toxic ?
itjamesisaakfriesen 1 year ago
Sorry. Cheers.
btstv 1 year ago
where do u get seeds...normal poppy seeds at at the store or what?
N1ck1Sk123 1 year ago
@N1ck1Sk123 Somebody asked that already! :D Seriously, you can either order them from various flower shops and seed vendors. Just google "poppy seeds" or try "Izmir Farms" or "exjordanary" or even try using some pricey poppy seeds from your local grocer. Even if they sterilize them some of them will grow. Most places it's perfectly legal to grow poppies for ornimentals and harvest seeds (without cutting the pods) but you should check your local laws.
btstv 1 year ago
@000Winter000 depends what soil ur using and other things. Possibly too much water. You should get a jewlers specticle and look at the soil and roots if they get sick....you'll often see critters in the soil. BTW, since when is just growing plants illegal in Canada? Izmir farms has a huge bunch of poppies and they also grow wild. They aren't pot plants, they're poppies. Society is getting crazy.
btstv 1 year ago
@btstv
Now that's crazy.
DrPsilocybin 1 year ago
@DrPsilocybin well, m8...that's just how it goes. Pot got a lot of attention in the 60s and 70s and scared the shit out of old people. However, you can see legal changes slowly occurring as the old folks leave politics for retirement homes. You can see that in the "norml" website (google it). I don't smoke pot at all, but I agree we need to change things. People do get addicted to drugs, but the problems come from the legal side, not addiction. Anyway, know your local laws before you experiment.
btstv 1 year ago
@DrPsilocybin And, yes...I totally agree with you. Just remember it's a surreal society you live in there in the US, and people call the cops for anything wierd. Both are "drugs" no matter how you look at it, and certainly opium or morphine is more dangerous than pot. People need to show a legitimate legal front for this stuff to change. We have a war on our own people and we send them mixed messages. There r pills for "late-shift disorder" but they'll prison you for mokin a jernt. Life is hard.
btstv 1 year ago
what seeds did you use to start out your plants?
74tripkid 1 year ago
@74tripkid Just regular old poppy seeds. You can get them from lots of places. You can use spice rack poppy seeds. Also, google: Izmir seed and spice, exjordinary, or go to ebay and look up poppy seeds. Please remember that poppy plants may be restricted. For sure if you cut them for latex in almost all places it would be considered illegal. Seeds are for growing and getting more seeds only. Cheers.
btstv 1 year ago
@74tripkid seeds of the most successful and sturdy were the "pink dawn" variety. You can find these all over. Get your seeds from "Exjorinary" or Izmir Spice Company in Canada. Cheers.
btstv 1 year ago

D3V1ANT1 1 year ago
@D3V1ANT1 Look mate, I'm not a pro-grower but I can tell you my exp. I left the lights on ALL THE TIME. Canabis is a whole different plant, but all plants have basic similar needs. Poppies seem to like COOLER temps overall, and Canada is great for poppies. Do a search for Izmir Poppy and Spice and you'll see how well poppies grow in Canada! I'd feel much more comfortable about growing poppies in Canada than in the states too. Plant in the fall like crazy, then they'll come up in spring. Cheers.
btstv 1 year ago
@D3V1ANT1 Wanted to reply to you again. It occured to me that at some point I did put a timer on my lights eventually. I usually had them turn on just as we were in bed and likely asleep (12am to 1am) and then turn off around when we got up to work. This way they still had SOME light from ambient light thru windows and such, but there was still a kind of "cycle" and a period where photosynthisis would not be so intense. It's also worth mentioning that I used lights mostly in the early stages.

he check out my poppies..... i grow indoors too but you cant compete with the sun...
my back yard is starting to look like afghanistan.... but mine are bigger
SomniProductions 1 year ago
@tmd004 Yes, this sounds like it's important! I honestly don't know that stuff. I'm way amatuer...however, I'm guessing you're talking about specs on the lights? Lumens per m2 sounds like intensity you'd read from a light meter also....am I right? I can tell you something obvious, the lpm are much higher on top than below! Seriously, I'll look into this a bit deeper. I also had soil issues.
btstv 1 year ago
What are your lumens per m2?
What is the color rendering index (CRI) and temperature rating on the lights you are using? The answer will solve you issues.
tmd004 1 year ago
unless the seedlings experience a real strong frost, no worries. Again, check out Exjordanary's vid.
btstv 1 year ago
Someone I know has just planted some seeds...they started them off indoors and have just sprouted! They look strong and healthy and is transplanting some of them now outdoors (end April) for the warmer months! Will they survive?
IrishCol1only 1 year ago
yes ur all right in the fact that certainly outdoor is preferable to indoor, particularly for this plant. But if you invest the care, time, and money along with attention to detail it's no problem.
btstv 1 year ago
I planted several different types and just stuck with what seemed to like indoors the best. These plants are all now full of blooms and pods. Like "Exjordinary" said, you have to just experiment and see what the plants like. These plants grew with really minimal care, the wrong soil, and barely any lighting and they STILL grew decently.
btstv 1 year ago
I used totally artificial light durring a dark and cold winter. Once March rolled around I put them in the window and they really took off just with the morning light. If I'd spent real money on the lights and such, they'd be in really spectacular shape.
btstv 1 year ago
cuz it needs more of a hard soil (clay like ) which can hold moist for relatively long time as opposed to potting soils. the soil has to have alkaline ph. acidic soil will not respond well. basically a lot of fresh and dry air will show u a significant change in the growth pattern. dont forget if u live in a city with too much heat, or on contrary too much cloud or humidity, dont bother thinking about it. but if u live in a place like Denver, definitely go for it. it shall not turn u down...
rtajodini 1 year ago
ok brother let me tell u something. when I was a kid I used to see my dad growing a lot off poppy plants and harvesting it (tremendous amounts like kilos) back in my motherland afghanestan. well since I live in seattle I really wanted to use my fathers legacy to harvest some opium indoors but it didnt turn out well. ok firs of all u gotta consider that this plant best grows and flowers on mountains about 2000-3000 meters of sea level. 2nd the regular potting soil is no good for it
rtajodini 1 year ago
that's fantastic news! thanks :)
lacacti 1 year ago
Yes, your poppies should "spring back". At least that's the experience that I had. The little sprouts seem too weak to hold up there own or they don't get roots deep enough, perhaps. Are you planting in peat-pellets or just plain old dirt?
btstv 1 year ago
thanks for sharing. perhaps you can lend some advice--- my poppies are just starting to sprout but when they reached nearly two inches tall they all fell over. their leaves are green and healthy looking, but they don't seem to be growing anymore. do you suppose they might spring back up?
lacacti 1 year ago
@lacacti - That's PERFECTLY normal. The reason they do that is to create flexibility for themselves for when they get bigger and their pods grow, and become top-heavy. When the sprouts fall over, they then start to grow straight up from there. Leaving a piece of stem laying sideways on the ground which will make it so the stems won't snap when the wind blows later on. For more info, see my "HOW TO GROW POPPIES.." video here on Youtube. This video here is actually a "Video response" to it. Thanks
