well basically for rebel yell I think Steve hangs a toy gun down by his guitar, and than the pick-up on the guitar (the little magnetic parts on the body, under the strings, usually like in the center of the guitar) they pick up noise, you can do it with anything, but thats how he got the toy gun noise (pick-ups are basically like a mic for your guitar lol)

Only things that are Metal, so the only thing that can do it is a Speaker which is in the Toy gun that the Pickups detect the Frequency's from the Speaker.

There's a speaker in the gun, and speakers use a magnet to make sound, so when you put them up to guitar pickups which use magnets to detect string vibration, it picks up the noise from the guy. Also works with drills, TV remotes...
