Awesome band and having seen them many times, in the late 70's/early 80's they sounded BETTER than they did on vinyl, it was a band that kicked out quality time after time after time
The Buzzes as i loved to call then in the 70's/80's are a band that I lurved then and still do now , even with a Family 21 year son/ 18 year old daughter. Pete shelley actually wrote for alvin stardust, with great success. UUGH, everyone has taste I suppose????
@eltonjazz That was a different Peter Shelley who wrote for Alvin Stardust (and, for My Coo-Ca-Choo was actually the singer). The other Peter Shelley had two solo hits, Gee Baby and Love Me Love My Dog, He could never in a million years have come up with the genius of Promises or What Do I Get.
I always get a good laugh playing bands like The Buzzcocks, Misfits, Souxsie, The Damned and so on at work and having the young high school kids ask me if it's some new indie band haha.
This song was released in 1978. Music videos were a novelty back then, and an after thought. The timelessness of this song is a testament to its quality.
@TheFictionfilms Yeah, a lot of modern bands suck, but even the best bands started out in the shadow of their predecessors, and look where they are now? Everyone has the right to express their creativity, so let 'em, and if they suck, well, don't listen. Music is a great way to speak and have fun, bullocks to the rest! <3
Peter was married to a lady called Carol (according to an interview in the NME about 30 years ) Who cares love those manic love songs since I was 15 (1977)
Yeah you wouldn't know if they were gay or straight if you tried to pick apart the lyrics on some of their songs. The words and gender are pretty mixed-up. I heard a story that Pete Shelly married a Japanese girl but I don't know how true that was. If you go up to Manchester and listen to some of the blokes talk - you would think they were all queer, round them parts.
Whatever sexual orientation though, these are still great songs.
Why does ericthe viking spend so much time critising the buzzcocks if you don't like get off this page and go and look at something else. Pete Shelley wrote some of the best songs of the time.
'''I must have put the wrong ears on, the last time I listened to "promises" and thought "that sounds intertestingly reminiscent of the Yardbirds in late Eric Clapton days"
Stil, I bow to the opinion of such an articulate expert!
I thought that pete was married with a kid? Who cares they were along with the undertones the first bands I saw in london. I love the 80s disco and pop bands prefabsprout abc, earth wind and fire chic. Love the Keanes of today (great live). But the Buzzcocks gay or not rule.
I heard this on the radio when I was 10 and loved it immediately. Recorded it on a WHSmith's C60 tape and played it to death. It takes me right back. Classic.
I think there is a lot of amazing British bands from early-mid 2000's that have to attribute the Buzzcocks as a major influence like the mid 90's bands did the Smiths. Buzzcocks don't get the hype they deserve I don't think and I'm newcomer to their music. Seem to be a punk band with proper talent!
Those echoing background vocals, like monastic chant, and that guitar-driven music... this is the Yardbirds, with Clapton on guitar, rewritten and repackaged for the 1970's. Still bloody brilliant in its own right, but go and listen to "Heart Full of Soul" or "For Your Love" and then tell me I',m wrong...
nah video making was pretty advanced well before the buzzcocks came around.. its just that the buzzcocks had shit videos. but wonderful music which is sadly being forgotten in place of bands who made more noise like the sex pistols and bands who were just, quite simply, better, like the clash. since when did the quality of the music count though?
@shinysynthcity There's not much conflict to that, I'd say. Their melodic approach was very much in line with the Power Pop New Wave sensibility. Actually, they were becoming more more full-on New Wave by the end, and Pete would go on to release synthpop solo records afterwards.
@peliparado94 ..It's never to late. Take it from me you're listening to one of the greatset 80's band.I've been listening to this band since they emerged. Their music is fantastic you will enjoy.
Well that's the great thing about You Tube and the internet in general isn't it? You can discover all the great music that's passed you by and simply forget about all the current drivel infesting the ether.
@peliparado94 i just found out about them a few months ago as well. it's because the music industry keeps the good bands secret and popularizes the shite :(
Buzzcocks are the fathers of pop punk IMO without these guys, Green Day.... The Offspring, Blink probably would have never existed... to some it would be a good thing, but these guys.... just great.
it was hard to find this music growing up in North America. There was one Radio show that played for 2 hrs at 10:00pm on Sunday.I would sit in my room in the dark hoping my mom wouldn't catch me and go on about being late for school. I dont think i would have survived the 8t's if not for the British Invasion and Import records
@bucky468 Maybe because they didn't sing with American accents !! Mind you anyone "in the know" or with any taste in The States cottoned on to a lotta great acts that came outta the UK.
"@bucky468 UK had so many great acts that did nothing in America."
You can say that again. Living in America where this music is considered "underground" it's actually amazing to think of a situation like in the UK where all these punk, post-punk bands and whatnot were regular top 40, even top 20 staples! Its SO different from what US charts were typically predominated by.
@xreddragonx but who's laughing now, certainly not us, with our james blunts and our kooks. even our underground scene is dire. it now basically consists of bad digital dub mixed together with bad, clumpy drum and bass, forming the horrible beast known as dubstep. whereas america has some pretty neat little bands over there, although american bands usually lack the wit and charm of the brittish ones. i miss jarvis...
