  • Golly, that back up guy looks like a young simon day.

  • FUCK YEAH!!!

  • Sadly songwriting has moved in the opposite direction...

  • Great song, which still sounds brilliant today. :-)

  • Aumenta o volume que isso aí é o mais puro rock'n'roll!.

Essa banda, The Buzzcocks, fez parte da minha linda juventude...

    Velhos tempos, belos dias....

  • best intro ever.

  • Awesome band and having seen them many times, in the late 70's/early 80's they sounded BETTER than they did on vinyl, it was a band that kicked out quality time after time after time

  • my fave song is E S P an absolute brilliant tune off a brilliant album

  • The Buzzes as i loved to call then in the 70's/80's are a band that I lurved then and still do now , even with a Family 21 year son/ 18 year old daughter. Pete shelley actually wrote for alvin stardust, with great success. UUGH, everyone has taste I suppose????

  • @eltonjazz That was a different Peter Shelley who wrote for Alvin Stardust (and, for My Coo-Ca-Choo was actually the singer). The other Peter Shelley had two solo hits, Gee Baby and Love Me Love My Dog, He could never in a million years have come up with the genius of Promises or What Do I Get.

  • I always get a good laugh playing bands like The Buzzcocks, Misfits, Souxsie, The Damned and so on at work and having the young high school kids ask me if it's some new indie band haha.

  • What's interesting is that don't really look like vintage dudes. Their "look" in this video looks pretty contemporary with a hint of retro.

  • even better after a couple of years

  • This song was released in 1978. Music videos were a novelty back then, and an after thought. The timelessness of this song is a testament to its quality.

  • a simply great song still sounds magnificent the best pop band around

  • @thewinnster1 this is punk. but ok, i glad that u enjoy proper music.

    greets from serbia :)

  • @TheFictionfilms Yeah, a lot of modern bands suck, but even the best bands started out in the shadow of their predecessors, and look where they are now? Everyone has the right to express their creativity, so let 'em, and if they suck, well, don't listen. Music is a great way to speak and have fun, bullocks to the rest! <3

  • 25 ppl never had promises made to them....poor them ....lmaoXD

  • The intro is orgasmic

  • Buzzcocks, Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, all they are better than the Sex Pistols!

  • I've only just noticed whilst watching this that Pete Shelley's got a certain Robert Smith about him, face wise.

  • Camp, sweaty and great! Still my fave 70's band.

  • Comment removed

  • classic tune

  • If yr in a punk band now just quit. Too many people-too many bands that suck!

    my faves-

    menace

    users

    sham 69

    lurkers

    slaughter & the dogs

    &....most definitely....the BUZZCOCKS(spiral scratch e.p.!!!!!!!)

  • you couldnt really get much better than this - or could you?

  • Best survivors of the day, next to the Avengers, of course. 6/10/11, SF, CA. Glad to see them.

  • @Assweasel

I was there in SF too...they were on fire as usual

  • how could you ever let me down.........

  • buzzcocks-bloody brilliant, love this song, must dig out my vinyl and listen to it.

  • I saw these guys at Hammerjacks in Baltimore MD in the early 90's. Too Much Joy opened for them. GREAT SHOW!!!

  • Was he gay...? Just want an awnser not a load off pricks telling me to fuck off

  • @byebyefeather He's bisexual.

  • "someuglyguy " the best user name in the history of all youtube ever

  • pretty good singer but lets face it...he aint singin about a girl.

  • @pbrick6301 What the fck are you talking about?

  • @pbrick6301 who gives a fuck?

  • "The fact is you never really cared." So true. Great track...

  • how can you ever let me down?

  • Course PEte looks like yr grandad he 50 something !! Hes still a brilliant songwriter

  • la razon por la q debi nacer en 1970!

  • Peter was married to a lady called Carol (according to an interview in the NME about 30 years ) Who cares love those manic love songs since I was 15 (1977)

  • Yeah you wouldn't know if they were gay or straight if you tried to pick apart the lyrics on some of their songs. The words and gender are pretty mixed-up. I heard a story that Pete Shelly married a Japanese girl but I don't know how true that was. If you go up to Manchester and listen to some of the blokes talk - you would think they were all queer, round them parts.

Whatever sexual orientation though, these are still great songs.

  • The BEST band to have ever come out of Manchester. And I must have been 15 when i first heard them.

  • great song,from a great manc band...classic!!!

  • I love this song SO much!!

  • pete asked my dad out :)

  • I was listening to these guys when I was 20. now I'm 51 and I still listen to them. rock on.

  • Why does ericthe viking spend so much time critising the buzzcocks if you don't like get off this page and go and look at something else. Pete Shelley wrote some of the best songs of the time.

  • Why compare one band to another? Can you not just listen to them?

  • He He. Diggle's Face.

  • Well, that's me told off, then...

'''I must have put the wrong ears on, the last time I listened to "promises" and thought "that sounds intertestingly reminiscent of the Yardbirds in late Eric Clapton days"

Stil, I bow to the opinion of such an articulate expert!

  • I thought that pete was married with a kid? Who cares they were along with the undertones the first bands I saw in london. I love the 80s disco and pop bands prefabsprout abc, earth wind and fire chic. Love the Keanes of today (great live). But the Buzzcocks gay or not rule.

  • I heard this on the radio when I was 10 and loved it immediately. Recorded it on a WHSmith's C60 tape and played it to death. It takes me right back. Classic.

  • is that how the pop programme got their name from this band?

  • @Springamatul yes

  • @Springamatul Yes, and the front cover design of Never mind the Bollocks Sex Pistols album.

  • not the peppiest cockz song.

  • THEY ARE SO GAY !!!!!!! (thats ok I am)

  • THEY ARE SO GAY !!!!!!!

  • whats up with thee old cock,.buzzcocks are boring, its common knowledge.bit of noise for the middle classes when mum goes out .

  • I love cocks

  • @AnarchyInCR You mean like fellas or mates isn't. or dicks?

  • Slaughter and the Dogs are a completely different band. to try to compare. man this just takes me back. nostalgia :)

  • 24 people have never been let down

  • 24 people are have never been let down

  • if i've got Singles Going Steady... what is the best buzzcocks CD?

  • slaughter and the dogs are much better.

  • @erictheviking871 Bollox

  • @Gnasher2100 ooh now now sailer.buzzcocks shite.

  • @erictheviking871 You gotta be kidding mate!

  • @MrLadyworld am i fuck old cock. buzzcocks to bland and boring.

  • @erictheviking871 bollocks

  • class

  • cool vid!

  • What fucking dildos would not like this???

  • I think there is a lot of amazing British bands from early-mid 2000's that have to attribute the Buzzcocks as a major influence like the mid 90's bands did the Smiths. Buzzcocks don't get the hype they deserve I don't think and I'm newcomer to their music. Seem to be a punk band with proper talent!

  • Those echoing background vocals, like monastic chant, and that guitar-driven music... this is the Yardbirds, with Clapton on guitar, rewritten and repackaged for the 1970's. Still bloody brilliant in its own right, but go and listen to "Heart Full of Soul" or "For Your Love" and then tell me I',m wrong...

  • @TheAgProv You are wrong...and a dildo!

  • pure pop perfection!

  • This song rocks out with its cock out .

  • @homehub100 No wrong part of the anatomy- it's from the heart- that's why it's so undeniably good. .

  • Not a bad singer for a fruit.

  • @pbrick6301 Sounds fucking peachy to me.

  • is it really necessary to say regardless in that sentence?

  • nah video making was pretty advanced well before the buzzcocks came around.. its just that the buzzcocks had shit videos. but wonderful music which is sadly being forgotten in place of bands who made more noise like the sex pistols and bands who were just, quite simply, better, like the clash. since when did the quality of the music count though?

  • Three cheers for the drummer.

  • @NSOUUL7 Agreed John Maher was awesome!

  • Now i'm a proper post-punk/New Romantic synth-head and even i love this song :')

  • @shinysynthcity There's not much conflict to that, I'd say. Their melodic approach was very much in line with the Power Pop New Wave sensibility. Actually, they were becoming more more full-on New Wave by the end, and Pete would go on to release synthpop solo records afterwards.

  • romiseeesss....made for uss.. manchester pojat skulaa

  • I started to listen to the Buzzcocks today... and i keep wondering how the fuck didn't i listen to them before?

  • @peliparado94 ..your lucky m8 i,m still buzzin from the songs 30 years after i first found them, you got 30 years of more..sweet

  • @peliparado94 ..It's never to late. Take it from me you're listening to one of the greatset 80's band.I've been listening to this band since they emerged. Their music is fantastic you will enjoy.

    Take care.

  • @peliparado94

I heard, Ever Fallen In Love with Someone you should and that's what got me hooked :)

  • @peliparado94

Well that's the great thing about You Tube and the internet in general isn't it? You can discover all the great music that's passed you by and simply forget about all the current drivel infesting the ether.

  • @peliparado94 Same here!!!

  • @peliparado94 i just found out about them a few months ago as well. it's because the music industry keeps the good bands secret and popularizes the shite :(

  • @peliparado94 Same as I.

  • @peliparado94 Same as I, only it was last year.

  • @peliparado94

    Me too :)

  • @peliparado9 enjoy then

  • @peliparado94 i keep asking myself that question ........

  • Check out 0:39 bloke on left look's very similar to Richard Gere!

  • sOUND'S LIKE aSH..

  • Best pop punk ever

  • This tune reminds me of my ex

  • Buzzcocks are the fathers of pop punk IMO without these guys, Green Day.... The Offspring, Blink probably would have never existed... to some it would be a good thing, but these guys.... just great.

  • this song fuckin rocks

  • its ok for the time, not more

  • this promises, are made for us!!!

  • perkusista świetny. ;D

  • Hmm amazing song and there so damn ugly that makes them even better!!

  • it was hard to find this music growing up in North America. There was one Radio show that played for 2 hrs at 10:00pm on Sunday.I would sit in my room in the dark hoping my mom wouldn't catch me and go on about being late for school. I dont think i would have survived the 8t's if not for the British Invasion and Import records

  • a lot of memories.....

  • Amazing that the Buzzcocks weren't a hit in the US. UK had so many great acts that did nothing in America. That's a shame.

  • @bucky468 Maybe because they didn't sing with American accents !! Mind you anyone "in the know" or with any taste in The States cottoned on to a lotta great acts that came outta the UK.

  • "@bucky468 UK had so many great acts that did nothing in America."

You can say that again. Living in America where this music is considered "underground" it's actually amazing to think of a situation like in the UK where all these punk, post-punk bands and whatnot were regular top 40, even top 20 staples! Its SO different from what US charts were typically predominated by.

  • @xreddragonx but who's laughing now, certainly not us, with our james blunts and our kooks. even our underground scene is dire. it now basically consists of bad digital dub mixed together with bad, clumpy drum and bass, forming the horrible beast known as dubstep. whereas america has some pretty neat little bands over there, although american bands usually lack the wit and charm of the brittish ones. i miss jarvis...

  • Brilliant......really, what else needs to be said??

  • Gret music doesn't need computer-made pompeuse bling-videos.It talks for itself.

  • does anyone know if these guys were oriental? I've been wondering this since 1980.

  • @34tgroan The back-up vocal guy in particular does kind of look it. I thought I was the only one who noticed.

  • i wish i was born in the 70s or 80s the best this era totally sucks nuthen but auto tuned high pitched crap music

  • @QueenBreanna1129 just change what you hate dude

  • Drummers so sick.

  • i love shelley's face when he's singing. he looks like he's telling you off

  • simple but brilliant

  • all u guys r lucky.im only 13 && new music is crap.stupid justin beiber n stuff lyk that >:( this isz real music, but most bands these days r either shitty wunnabes or just horrible

  • @LoveGerardForever Oh god, Justin beiber. That's kids balls have not dropped!

  • @cuteduckies254 sorry ,meant to vote up

  • @LoveGerardForever omg ur so rite lol justin bebber justin beeber im 13 i hate knew musik SHUT UP. If you don't like justin beiber "n stuf lyke that" then don't talk about it on a Buzzcocks video. And for God's sake, either pay more attention in English class or get Hooked on Phonics. In fact, stay away from music and from Youtube until you do.

  • not the best live band youd see. but credit to shelley and diggell they did some really good stuff with great rifts.

  • Best band ever, easy..

  • another fav of mine

  • We just had an EP review saying our singer sounds like Pete Shelley, particularly in The Beat Generation. If anyone wants to let us know what they think, and if they like us, it would be much appreciated. Ta

  • I'm sure videos like this bac k in the day kept bands like the Jam on their toes...

also, gotta dig the footage of the drummer, for a change!

  • @StPaulPaul - yeah...I bet Paul Weller heard that and thought ' Oh Sh*t'...I'd gotta top that somehow'....suppose he kinda did though?

  • I always remember sitting next to my Gran, when the Buzzcocks came on Top of the Pops.

She was pushing 90, but started tapping here slippers along to the beat, then said "they're good these". She was a Salford lass & knew a good tune when she heard one!

  • named my band after this song :) absolute favorite

  • maybe if bands these days focused on the music instead of so much time on the video, the music wouldn't be so shit.
