  • Anyone know who invented the jaws of life?

  • It was originally invented by Tim Smith in the 70's but I think the co inventor was Jack Allen Watson and when he submitted his drawing he would initial them J.A.W. So HURST adopted Jaws and later it became Jaws of Life.

Now I dont know if Tim and Jack worked on the original design or if Jack patented different changes to Tims work, but that's how Jaws got its name as "Jaws of Life.

  • Hi Adhesiveputty, I have show's George Hurst as the inventor of the jaws of life his most proud invetion and above all of his patents. Demonstrated it to the Transportation secretary John Volpe in Washington DC in1972. My info does not say designers name but say it being the original idea of George Hurst patent and safety certification to the Hurst Corp.then owned buy Sunbeam corp. Posible Tim and Jack designed and build it under enployment of Mr. Hurst. In any case it's a marvel of engineering

  • Hi Adhesiveputty, I do know that George Hurst had many engineers working for him and the company around the country. many years ago I witness one of two automatic transmissions built buy the Hurst Corp. with 9 moving parts. G.M. bought the patent for $1million in 1969 and shelved one of the trans and never knew the other was out here in the west.

  • would the jaws cut a engine? what wont they cut threw? and whats the most it can cut?

  • how does the jaws work?

  • uses a generator and a hydraulic operated tool that uses different hydraulic rams to move the jaws to either cut, or spread depending on what is needed. The tool is capable of using tons of pressure to cut through steel like it's butter
