I used to think exactly the same, love and forgiveness were the only two commandments, but they aren't. One of the reasons why science works so well is that it dramatically reduces our very-fallible human bias. Experiments are designed to reduce the influence of experimenter emotions, desires, etc, so better truth of a matter can be gleaned.

A scientifically rigorous study has large enough numbers to be statistically significant and strong controls on both researcher and subject. The only quality study done (google "NY Times studies on prayer") revealed prayer to be completely ineffective.
No other study has credibility--not because of what their conclusions, but how poorly they were done.

While the one I showed had 3393 patients over 6 years, this one showed prayer to have a positive effect on the patients. So like I said do you only pick the studies that back up your claims?
Also another note, the study I sourced. The doctors, nurses and patients did not know who were being prayed for. It was a far superior study than the NYT one.
THAT "study" was essentially done as a joke--the prayer was done four years AFTER the records being studied. From the researcher's words, it was: "intended lightheartedly to illustrate the importance of asking research questions that fit with scientific models"

Actually there is absolutely NO historical record of Jesus other than one mention which was clearly added much later and every historian on the face of the planet, including Christian, agrees it's an obvious forgery.
What we DO know is that during that time there were plenty of Gnostic preachers who were inspired by Zoroastrianism and other similar religions (which are nearly identical to the Christian story) who were claiming to be prophets.

All I see here is Catholic images. Please, read the Bible and see how much of the doctrines of the Catholic church you'll find there: i.e. where it says to pray to saints or Mary to "pray for you". In particular, look for references to the cults of Dagon, Isis/Astarte (the "queen of heaven") and 'vain repetitions'. To any catholics reading this: COME OUT OF HER. @taliesin939939 Well, the Catholic church was helped started by a man named Constantine 800 yrs AFTER the death and resurrection of MY Lord Jesus. Contsantine was the first to start the "religion" of Christianity for his OWN gain, his own ambitions. The philosophy of TRUE believers is much more personal and between the individual and their Christ. Obscurity is replaced with friendship and peace those who follow the WAY and the WAY only. You can believe in Christ and NOT be religous.

I do have to laugh when creationist talk about their "scientists." The vast majority of these young-earth people have no desire to look for real truth in evidence and they make no bones about it.
"Answers in Genesis" readily admits on the website that their "ultimate authority comes from the bible." Well guess why, that's NOT science. The only reason they dispute such well accepted evidence for an old-earth boils down to their belief in an ancient religious text.

One of the reasons why science works so well is that it dramatically reduces our very-fallible human bias. Experiments are designed to reduce the influence of experimenter emotions, desires, etc, so better truth of a matter can be gleaned.
Science uncovers truth WAY better than any other method. And whenever it encounters religious claims, the religious claims have been found to be nonsense.
The simple observation: jesus, allah, etc, are just as mythical as thor and zeus. We should move on.

EvilBible's website is an enormously valuable resource to those wanting to see christianity's very dark underbelly, but just reading the book itself is enough to get most christians saying "huhhhh?"

Reading the bible, including all of its travesties, was one the biggest instigators of doubt throughout my christian life. I'll bet I prayed more for doubt to be removed than any other single prayer. Of course there's nary a whit of evidence beyond your emotions. Jesus, god, thor, etc. never EVER reveal themselves in a way that can actually be measured. They never, EVER do anything at all that would suggest their existence to the rest of us. You make the claim of an almighty god who created the evidence, it's up to you to give evidence for that claim.
Many religions (christianity, islam, etc) make claims about prayer and those HAVE been falsified.
Funny thing, whenever religion makes a claim about affecting reality, it's quickly shown to be bunk.

@AdoptReality About the existance of god, I think the Kalam cosmologcal argument is a good one on current scientific knowlege. The KCA is still a plausible argument until proven otherwise.

Supernatural experiences, My mother has seen firsthand a demonic possesion as well there are number of other demonic possesions found on film or documented. There is enough evidence for god if you have an open mind.

The universe may have a cause, but there's nothing that suggests it's any god. And there ARE other cosmological models besides god which, given history, are more plausible.
The only sound studies of prayer have found it to be complete bunk, having NO effect whatsoever.
As to your mother, that's anecdotal and is not how science works. The reason science is so successful is because it uses sound research methods, not stories.

When you mean "sound studdies" are you refering to the ones that only backd your point up? because the link I posted before is a sound study that indicates prayer works. Why dont you like that one?

A scientifically rigorous study has large enough numbers to be statistically significant and strong controls on both researcher and subject. The only quality study done (google "NY Times studies on prayer") revealed prayer to be completely ineffective.
No other study has credibility--not because of what their conclusions, but how poorly they were done.
Prayer is religion's most disproven claim.
Try praying for someone's glass eye to be healed.

@AdoptReality The New York times! Holy bias source material Batman. From what I saw they prayed for 1800 people over 10 years. While the one I showed had 3393 patients over 6 years, this one showed prayer to have a positive effect on the patients. So like I said do you only pick the studies that back up your claims?
Also another note, the study I sourced. The doctors, nurses and patients did not know who were being prayed for. It was a far superior study than the NYT one.

THAT "study" was essentially done as a joke--the prayer was done four years AFTER the records being studied. From the researcher's words, it was: "intended lightheartedly to illustrate the importance of asking research questions that fit with scientific models"
The study I referenced wasn't DONE by the NYT, it was REPORTED by them.
Look up wikepedia on "prayer studies". It's all well sourced, too.

I know it was not done by the NYT, the media is bias. Wikepedia that is another bias source of infomation. You are just pulling things from sources that would not allow religious infomation published. Anyways the prayer study that NYT reported on has a number of religious problems with it so when dealing with religion many factors are required to be filled.

Of course you call it biased. Look at the methodology, though, and pick the one with the BEST SCIENCE. What you call biased used the best science protocols.
The Wikipedia article on prayer studies is great because it is quite well sourced and presents the whole gamut of prayer studies. And the results are clear, when good scientific controls are in place, prayer does NOTHING.
And when religion claims to affect reality, it's VERY fair game for science.

@AdoptReality I dont call the study bias, I call the sources bias. Both NYT and wikepedeia are bias sources nuff said, if you are pulling infomation from them its going to be hard to get the full picture.
The 2006 study has so many things wrong with it on the parameters of faith and religion, so why should it be considered absolute when dealing with religion when it doesnt even go by it? that Study is like trying to work out a physics problem without factoring in gravity etc.

the fact that people despise bible and turned away from Christianity in fact fulfilling prophecy of many are led astray, men love grow cold and hated Jesus assuming Him as "imaginary".
people can ask thousands of questions. why God dont heal, why God allow war, why this and that. because they never understand the Scripture well.
we are human are limited to human thinking. if we as human can answer divine questions as to why God did this and that, we would then be God. His way are not our way

That word evidence is so important because it's how we actually learn. Science is all about looking at evidence, processing it rationally and NOT deferring to ancient religious texts. Notice how science actually works.

You have a different meaning of science to me, I consider science to be find some evidence, concive a theory, test the theory multiple times to make see if it's correct. If not discard or modify the theory. But this only works for operational science.

Great! Prayer has utterly failed. It's easy to do bad science but takes strict discipline to do GOOD science.
The study you quote, with 3393 participants, had the subjects prayed for AFTER their cases were closed!!!! The author himself put in a comment about how it was a "lighthearted" way to show how research must be questioned. Google "prayer study" + 3393 and I'm sure you'll find other references.
But *DO* look at the study itself. It's anything but real science.

By all means. Go look at the NCSE website. It's FAR from pseudoscience. First off, the young earth belief is astoundingly nonsensical. Evidence from many geochronology methods verify an old earth.
As to evolution, there is incredibly strong science, written about in numerous books from well-respected scientists that detail powerful evidence. Please look up "why evolution is true" for a rational, science-based treatment of the facts.

Would you debate someone who believes, with all their heart, that the earth is flat? Of course not. Because giving such nonsense a platform does no good.
Evolution is very sound science with no belief in supernatural beings. It's well accepted worldwide by scientists who actually study many disciplines, especially biology, geology, paleontology and others.
Notice that the only people who seem to question evolution are, not surprisingly, religious people. Hmmm.

You HAVE to be defending religious texts to deny so much science. Matching Tree rings alone go back 15,000 years plus let alone the INCREDIBLE number of other dating methods.
Even the vast majority of christian GEOLOGISTS accept the obvious evidence of an old earth. Google "christian geologists write on earth's old age."
To say the earth is 6000 years old is no less silly than to say the sun orbits earth.
