Thanks a lot Stefan! I was but a child of 5 years when my Mother married an American soldier and moved to the USA in 1967. My Oma died in 1986 and I have been to Berlin only twice since.

Mein Deutsch (so schlecht wie es ist) ist mir reichlich mit hände und füsse, aber die kann ich schriftlich leider nicht benutzen!

I will say this, my Grandmother's sister lived in Hamburg and while I never met her, I did speak with her once on the telephone. She spoke the most beautiful German (hochdeutsch). I don't know if that was a reflection of her or if all from Hamburg speak so well.

On the other hand, I had an Uncle (also now dead) who lived in Bayern. Their German ist eine menge kauderwelsch. Berliners too have a distinct dialect, but for me is easy to understand.

well, the best German is actually spoken around Hannover, but Hamburger German is close to Hochdeutsch.

Remember, coming from Berlin, German was my first language. Once we moved to USA however; my Mother struggled to learn English and at some point we no longer spoke German to each other, only when having German company.

I stayed in Berlin with my Oma once three months and found that my German was better than their English. My Oma could speak no English. She, in fact, was flüchtlinge aus Ost Preußen durch den krieg.
