@jameolockley I agree. I think this is a mediocre performance. It is a good example of how Bassey does not balance the strength of the voice - it is either piano or extremely loud. Nothing in between. The suspense of the song collapses and somewhere midway through it becomes unbearable to listen to.
Marvellous. Smooth and powerful just like Sedaka intended it. A classic version with all the emotion embraced in the lyrics. Plus this woman can really sing.
Shirley is, above all, a performer, then a singer. No one who has seen her live can be unmoved. She absolutely wrings the emotion out of you. She's come up the hard way. She deserves all her fame, success and money. Jessie Norman admired how she could sing at full tilt for more than an hour. If she's good enough for JN then she's good enough for me!
Not bad, but if you've listened first the Carpenters' version it may sound weird...It's a totally different style from the sweet and peaceful Karen voice
Bad cabaret singing at it's worst ..what's up with the high notes out of nowhere ..and predictable ..I know exactly when she is gonna hit that god awful high note ..cringe worthy ...can hardly be compared to Karen Carpenter's version ..what unbelieveable emotion pours out of every word...please put me out of my misery now...I so don't feel her or believe her at all ....
I never thought much about the song...But Shirley..is the GREATEST...great on record as well saw her perform in Los Angeles many years ago...check out her version of "Here's To Live"
Fabulosa siempre, Shirley es tal vez una de las mejores vocalistas de todos los tiempos, me hubiese gustado que cante el tema junto a Elvis, pues son las dos mejores versiones de este tema.
Absolutely fantastic! I just uploaded the studio version, and wrote in the infobox that I regretted not getting to see her sing this live. Now I have! You made my day, so thanks!
The ONLY singer in the world able to sing this wonderful song.

Real music speaks to the heart. Shirley gets to the heart of the matter. Sensational song for her to sing.

I don't think anyone does the song better than Neil Sedaka but the versions by Shirley, Karen, and Sissel are all great.
