Summerall didn't make many highlight reels due to his understated nature. Modern-day announcers know that, if you want to be heard during a great play, you have to give a radio-style call because they have to be more exciting. As for Buck, either he has been told to emulate Summerall, or he loved his style so much that he has chosen to emulate it.
@devswartz for TV, it's better to let the pictures do the talking than sounding like a jackass who got his dick sucked for the first time. ESPN and the highlight driven culture have ruined PBP calling cause of that.
@texmexman1 I think its because Madden coached the Raiders and wanted to be as low key and neutral as possible. He was probably celebrating but controlling the tone of his voice !
is it just me or does it seem like any team that plays the redskins no matter which uni there wearing home or away the uniforms look better against the redskins colors
people say this is the city of L.A.'s first and only Super Bowl victory, well the Raiders moved to L.A. in 1982 from Oakland, in barely their second year in L.A. they won a Super Bowl, so pretty much it was basically an Oakland team still that won this Super Bowl, this 1983 Raiders team was built in Oakland, not built in L.A., I'd say Marcus Allen was the only true Los Angeles Raider, and Bo Jackson although didn't appear until later.
@nobodysperfect06 When did I call myself a "real fan"? I was just responding to your idiotic comment about the LA Raiders not really being LA when they won the Title vs Washington. I live in LA but not a raiders fan. Couldn't care less if they weren't here, im a Cowboys fan, my girl is a raiders fan so I respect the raiders and dont mind seeing them win if my Cowboys dont win. LA doesn't need the raiders, it was violent when they were here in LA cause of stupid people calling themselves fans.
These were the Oakland Raiders. All that time the Raiders spent down in that shit hole you call home was not only a mistake, but an aberration. They are back in Oakland were they mutherfucking belong, and there is nothing you're going to do about it. Besides, you idiots lost the Rams to St. Louis. Fuck L.A.. You losers don't deserve jack-mutherfucking shit. I get so sick and tired of you SoCal clowns claiming the Raiders were your team. You got no NFL team. Deal with it.
@rayjr62 Dont matter cause the raiders still REPRESENTED LOS ANGELES in this superbowl, NOT oakland.
I personally dont want the raiders back in L.A. but it looks like the raiders will be one of 2 teams that will come to L.A. if the make a stadium here in L.A.
Little BiTCH riggins CHOKED this superbowl game. Didn't do shit after killing the Faggot Ass dolphins the year before, its cause he went up against a REAL Defensive team, no Pussy ass defense like the Gay-Ass light Color uniform dolphins.
@gfscarface13 if riggins is a little bitch, what does that make you? dog shit on his shoes? im a raiders fan, but how can you diss riggins, hall of fame fullback? the main reason the raiders shut him down was because their whole defense was designed to stop him first, and anything else after. they were bringing run blitzes almost every play. the raiders respected him, thats why they focused on shutting him down. incredible defensive game by the raiders. sloppy cum guzzle by you!
After this win the Raiders would be the first and only Suberbowl winners to be featured in a women's fashion magazine. Super Bowl XVIII was held on Jan.22,1984. The 48th birthday of the founder of the magazine they were in,Big Beautiful Woman. The birthday girl: Carole Shaw.
I loved the comment, "You don't teach that." In fact, you can't teach it. It is as much a part of the runner as his hair or eye color. It is an intangible that becomes a great tool to win with. So many don't understand this fact; but when it is there it is there.
Most painful game I've ever watched! But...gotta give much respect to Tom Flores' Raiders! They had the greatest cornerbacks ever in this game, because they shut down the greatest trio of receivers ever in this game!
I hope someone realized the irony of this play: Riggins, the Super Bowl MVP last year, was trying to convert on fourth down with the exact same play that led to his 43-yard touchdown run against the Dolphins. Obviously the Raiders were aware of this and stopped him short. And then, on the VERY next play, Allen takes the ball from that same spot and runs 74 yards to the end zone, on his way to becoming the Super Bowl MVP this time around. And both men set rushing records in their performances!
@mackcrusher Here's another interesting fact. In Super Bowl XVII, Redskins QB Joe Theismann had a pass batted by a Dolphins player deep in Redskins territory. The Dolphins player almost came down with it, but Joe swatted the ball away and prevented a defensive TD. In Super Bowl XVIII, however, Joe threw a screen pass deep in his territory with only 0:12 left in the first half. It was intercepted by the Raiders and returned for an easy TD. To this day, one of the dumbest play calls ever!
@jskennedy0207 You mean the Jack Squirek interception return? Yeah, why not? And the Redskins had actually tried that play against the Raiders before--in the regular season! In that game, which the Redskins won 37-35 (pretty close, huh?), Theisman threw a screen pass to running back Joe Washington, who gained, I think, 67 yards. The Redskins were trying the same pass in the Super Bowl (same QB, same RB), but the Raiders wised up and sent in Squirek to cover the screen pass.
@mackcrusher Yeah, that's the play, but in the regular season game, they had much more time left on the clock. To this day, you still see that Super Bowl play pop up on one of those "dumbest play" type NFL shows, and it's understandable. You're deep in your own territory with only 12 seconds left in the first half, you've been playing badly, and you're down by 11. Then, you run a ridiculous play, and it costs you a TD. You're down now by 18! Wow, nice going! Epic dumb is more like it!
Everyone talks about Barry Sanders, Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith being the greatest running back, and their is no denying that the are. But Marcus Allen is without a doubt in the same category.
Al Davis should be ashamed of what he did to Marcus Allen. This Raider team was so good.I can't believe no one ever talks about this defense.I mean they demolished the Skins in this game.
12 years old when I watched this. Still the greatest Super Bowl I've ever watched. Dad taped it on Beta, if anyone can remember what that was, and so for the next ten years I watched it repeatedly and practically memorized every play. Raiders fan for life.
(Sigh). Fourth-grade, 9 years old, had just left Alexandria, VA on December 26th to head overseas. Read about the outcome in Stars and Stripes, and when we finally got the video-tape of the game...WOW! To this day, this is my LOWEST MOMENT as a sports fan. Marcus Allen torn my heart out that day. I NEVER forgave for this. Yeah, I came to appreciate him as a player, but THIS is the first thing I think of ALL THESE YEARS LATER!
I've been a Redskins fan all my life, and I still cringe when I think of this game. I actually wish that the 49ers had beaten them in the championship. Just about everything that could go wrong for the Skins in this game did.
@jskennedy0207 i know exactly how you feel. i'm a raiders fan and i feel the same way every time i think of super bowl xxxvii (37) against the buccaneers. the raiders were just a huge train wreck that night.
@slydawg221 It's tough enough to see your team lose the Super Bowl, but it's worse when you see them get annihilated. I was a junior in high school during the 1983 NFL season. I still remember my chemistry teacher, of all people, giving me his condolences after Super Bowl XVIII. It wouldn't have surprised me if they had flown the banner half staff at Redskins Park after this game.
@jskennedy0207 Yeah well your team came back and won two more Super Bowls. I'm a diehard Raider fan and know what it's like to get killed in the Super Bowl. Both the Packers and Buccaneers smoked my team :(
I remember this day as one of the best days of my life. I was 14 and all my friends were lifelong raider fans. The redskins were heavy favorites. But i knew my raiders could hang they were wearing the black home jerseys. I remember names like lester hayes, cliff branch, rod martin, kenny king, mike haynes, and tom flores all from my childhood. This day was the very best.
The Redskins didn't belong. They win a Superbowl the year before because of a strike-shortened season. They "won" the NFC championship game against the 49ers on a bogus pass interference call against Ronnie Lott that put the ball on the 1 late in that game. They got blasted by the Raiders simply because they were on the same level as them.
@josephbbl dang forrealz i never knew that. thats kinda cold. I wished that the raiders would have played against Ronnie Lott... Hes my hero cuz he came from my Middle and High School.
@josephbbl oh please. 1982 may be a strike shortened but the skins won 12 out of their 13 games fair and square. in '83, they set a record for most points scored in a season. in the nfc championship game against the 49ers, they should've led 33-0 at the start of 4th quarter, but mark moseley missed 4 field goals to keep joe montana within a striking distance for one of his fabled comebacks.
get outta here- you don't belong to a nfl discussion board.
Allen was a legend, the skins had that run shut down and Marcus Allen just went the other way with it, I miss the 80's NFL and all the great Players from that decade, Montana,The posse, LT,Reggie white and the eagles Marino, darrel green Elway and the 3 amigo's and of course Riggo and the HOGS.
Funny how two of the most pivotal Raider scores came with 12 seconds on the clock for their respective quarters (Marcus Allen's nice run here; and in the 2nd quarter the Jack Squirek INT)
Damn when I saw this I never knew this was going to be the last time my Raiders would win the Super Bowl. Al please get a run stuffing Defensive Tackle get Seymour's homie Wilfork next year.
@TheRaidermania NFL Films about a year ago, released a DVD that features all three televised broadcasts of the Raiders Super Bowl victories. It is called Oakland Raiders 3 Greatest Games: Super Bowl Victories, if you want to search on the Internet for it. The only downside with them is that the singing of the National Anthem is not shown on these DVD'S because NFL Films has to pay copyrights for it if it were shown. Other than that, these DVD's are a good buy.
This was by no means a game-changing run; the Raiders dominated this Super Bowl from start to finish. A great play, yes; but ironically, the most dramatic, game-changing run in Super Bowl history happened one year earlier when John Riggins' 43-yard TD run on 4th and 1 in the 4th quarter put the Redskins ahead of the Dolphins.
On the contrary, Summerall's aware he's on TV, not radio, and letting the image speak for itself instead of shouting over it trying to "have a memorable call" or hyping every decent/good play like OH MY GOODNESS THIS IS THE GREATEST MOMENT EVER. Which would be a refreshing contrast today.
Pat's style is understated and archaic, but I still like it.
However, by that logic why do we need commentary at all? We should just let ALL the plays speak for themselves. All I know, is some of the greatest sports plays of all time were made even more special coupled with that "memorable call". It's as if the comentator is experienceing the play from the fans perspective..
Right on the money. The players showboating is over the top to start. , now the announcers want to get in to the act. It does seem pretty obvious when they try to come up with an " unforgetable line" during a play. Al Michaels " Do you believe in miracles.....YES '. Is way over rated if you ask me. It's the PLAYERS and THEIR effort that makes the moment. Hell, I can see what's going on.
IN my humble opinion, the top 5 Raider plays of all time are:5)"Old man Willie"from Super Bowl XI. 4)"Marcus Allen....running with the night"-Super Bowl XVIII 3)"Ghost to the post"-1977 AFC divisional playoffs. 2)"Sea of hands"1974 AFC Divisional playoff, and at 1)of course,"The Holy Roller".I will post 5 more to make a top ten list-wanna hear from you other Raider fans to see if you agree with me,or have your own top ten you wanna post.
Okay, here are my top ten: 10. Plunkett to Chester 65 yard TD in 1980 AFC Championship...THE play that got them going against San Diego 9. Bo's 91 yard TD run against the Seahawks in '87 on MNF. Incredible play 8. Gannon to Brown, 2000 in OT to beat the 49ers 7. Red Right 88...Mike Davis' INT to beat Cleveland 6. Holy Roller 5. Old Man Willie's INT in SB XI 4. Branch's TD over Roynell Young in SB XV 3. Ghost to the Post 2. Sea of Hands catch 1. Marcus' run...absolutely a thing of beauty
Thanks for responding-great list! Here are my choices from 6 to 10:6)"shot heard round the world"-Tatums hit in SB XI 7)"Bo knows MNF".Nuff said.8)Red Right 88-Davis saves the day!9)"jumping jack flash"-Squireks int in SB XVIII and 10)i agree with you-the 65 yard Plunkett to Chester gem in the 1980 AFC Title Game(talk about look what I found!) 2 honorable mentions would be Mike Haynes 97 INT for a TD vs Miami in 1984 and Plunkett to Branch 99 yd TD vs. the Redskins in 1983.More lists,Raider fans.
Im sure there are plenty of plays that would warrant consideration for top 10 that have to be left off the list.Nice choice of Branchs TD against Roynell Young in Super Bowl XV-a great catch(a Hall of Fame catch,in my opinion!) that took the starch out of the Eagles.Cliff Branch,as ive said a zillion times, should be in the Hall of Fame,no question!Tough to argue with Marcus Allens run as the number one play. The Holy Roller may be more famous, but Allens run was more spectacular!Thing of beauty.
Oh no doubt. If anyone does a LITTLE research, they'll see that his numbers DWARF Swann's and are just about equal to Stallworth (in fewer years). It's ridiculous...damn near criminal how Branch isn't in. You can say what you want about Plunkett, Flores (George Seifert has two rings and isn't getting into the Hall) and even Ray Guy. But MAN...Cliff Branch DESERVES to be in
Branch numbers are closer to Blietnikoff numbers as well. Those were basically the Raiders best wide receivers during those Super Bowl years along side Dave Casper, the tight end. It took Casper years to get in the Hall of Fame as well, so don't be surprised if it takes Branch to get it.
Definitely one of the top 5 plays in Raider history.I can still hear the legendary voice of John Facenda saying,"Marcus Allen....running with the night."I never get tired of watching this and it still gives me chills seeing it.
"That happened." Madden was ahead of his time. :)

The Redskins didn't belong. They win a Superbowl the year before because of a strike-shortened season. They "won" the NFC championship game against the 49ers on a bogus pass interference call against Ronnie Lott that put the ball on the 1 late in that game. They got blasted by the Raiders simply because they were on the same level as them.
josephbbl 1 year ago
@josephbbl dang forrealz i never knew that. thats kinda cold. I wished that the raiders would have played against Ronnie Lott... Hes my hero cuz he came from my Middle and High School.
MexicanNinja909 1 year ago
@josephbbl oh please. 1982 may be a strike shortened but the skins won 12 out of their 13 games fair and square. in '83, they set a record for most points scored in a season. in the nfc championship game against the 49ers, they should've led 33-0 at the start of 4th quarter, but mark moseley missed 4 field goals to keep joe montana within a striking distance for one of his fabled comebacks.
get outta here- you don't belong to a nfl discussion board.

In my 30+ years as a Skins fan, this is by far the worst day ever. But Gibbs learned a lot from it. His 87 and 91 teams were far more disciplined.

Saweeet! The Raiders, at night time, were unbeatable back in the day.
socalsocal88 1 year ago
Allen was a legend, the skins had that run shut down and Marcus Allen just went the other way with it, I miss the 80's NFL and all the great Players from that decade, Montana,The posse, LT,Reggie white and the eagles Marino, darrel green Elway and the 3 amigo's and of course Riggo and the HOGS.

That was cool. I remember that day was great.

I've been looking for years for a complete video of the entire game. Anyone know where I can get one?
TheRaidermania 2 years ago
@TheRaidermania NFL Films about a year ago, released a DVD that features all three televised broadcasts of the Raiders Super Bowl victories. It is called Oakland Raiders 3 Greatest Games: Super Bowl Victories, if you want to search on the Internet for it. The only downside with them is that the singing of the National Anthem is not shown on these DVD'S because NFL Films has to pay copyrights for it if it were shown. Other than that, these DVD's are a good buy.

This was the first Superbowl I ever watched. I was 8 years old. I rem this run like it was yesterday. The whole house went nuts.

Riggins' run was the most important, but this was the best run in SB history, as in the most athletic. By far.
kingofmilwaukee 2 years ago
Anyone who thinks this is the best run in Super Bowl history is stupid as shit.
John Riggins' 43-yd TD run on 4-1 with the game on the line in the previous Super Bowl was the best run in Super Bowl history.
StraightOuttaDC 2 years ago
uhhh, NO. It effected the game's outcome more but it wasn't nearly as nice of a run.

Your a retard
This RUN ended the deadskins wet dreams of winning this Super Bowl

Definately the most dramatic, game-changing, run in Super Bowl history.
SCE2AUX 2 years ago
This was by no means a game-changing run; the Raiders dominated this Super Bowl from start to finish. A great play, yes; but ironically, the most dramatic, game-changing run in Super Bowl history happened one year earlier when John Riggins' 43-yard TD run on 4th and 1 in the 4th quarter put the Redskins ahead of the Dolphins.
SuperBowlExpert 2 years ago
Riggins 43 yard run was the one I was referring to...gets a bit confusing with the placement of the comments though.

I'm in awe. I'd love to have this game broadcast on DVD....this is amazing quality and a true look at Raider greatness.
LoyalRaiderFan 2 years ago
Pat Summerall's call was so BLAND. This is one of the greatest plays ever, and he almost single handedly ruined it.
zepptune1 2 years ago
bill king, the raiders play by play announcer, calls it so much better.
BashBrothers1989 2 years ago
Bill King was the best!
SFFOOL76 2 years ago
maybe he pulled for the redskins
jamezpackerfan 2 years ago
On the contrary, Summerall's aware he's on TV, not radio, and letting the image speak for itself instead of shouting over it trying to "have a memorable call" or hyping every decent/good play like OH MY GOODNESS THIS IS THE GREATEST MOMENT EVER. Which would be a refreshing contrast today.
Pat's style is understated and archaic, but I still like it.
JohnDoe8842 2 years ago
I respect your opinion..
However, by that logic why do we need commentary at all? We should just let ALL the plays speak for themselves. All I know, is some of the greatest sports plays of all time were made even more special coupled with that "memorable call". It's as if the comentator is experienceing the play from the fans perspective..
That's just my thought...
zepptune1 2 years ago
Well, without commentators, what else would players do when they retire? :D
JohnDoe8842 2 years ago
Right on the money. The players showboating is over the top to start. , now the announcers want to get in to the act. It does seem pretty obvious when they try to come up with an " unforgetable line" during a play. Al Michaels " Do you believe in miracles.....YES '. Is way over rated if you ask me. It's the PLAYERS and THEIR effort that makes the moment. Hell, I can see what's going on.

One weird coincidence in this game is that The Raiders scored, in both, the 2nd and 3rd quarters with 0:12 on the clock
baddog7676 2 years ago
IN my humble opinion, the top 5 Raider plays of all time are:5)"Old man Willie"from Super Bowl XI. 4)"Marcus Allen....running with the night"-Super Bowl XVIII 3)"Ghost to the post"-1977 AFC divisional playoffs. 2)"Sea of hands"1974 AFC Divisional playoff, and at 1)of course,"The Holy Roller".I will post 5 more to make a top ten list-wanna hear from you other Raider fans to see if you agree with me,or have your own top ten you wanna post.
rodblackwood 2 years ago
cbaldwinjr 2 years ago
Thanks for responding-great list! Here are my choices from 6 to 10:6)"shot heard round the world"-Tatums hit in SB XI 7)"Bo knows MNF".Nuff said.8)Red Right 88-Davis saves the day!9)"jumping jack flash"-Squireks int in SB XVIII and 10)i agree with you-the 65 yard Plunkett to Chester gem in the 1980 AFC Title Game(talk about look what I found!) 2 honorable mentions would be Mike Haynes 97 INT for a TD vs Miami in 1984 and Plunkett to Branch 99 yd TD vs. the Redskins in 1983.More lists,Raider fans.
rodblackwood 2 years ago
Can't hate on Squirek. I know that play sealed the deal...it was just off my list.
cbaldwinjr 2 years ago
Im sure there are plenty of plays that would warrant consideration for top 10 that have to be left off the list.Nice choice of Branchs TD against Roynell Young in Super Bowl XV-a great catch(a Hall of Fame catch,in my opinion!) that took the starch out of the Eagles.Cliff Branch,as ive said a zillion times, should be in the Hall of Fame,no question!Tough to argue with Marcus Allens run as the number one play. The Holy Roller may be more famous, but Allens run was more spectacular!Thing of beauty.
rodblackwood 2 years ago
Oh no doubt. If anyone does a LITTLE research, they'll see that his numbers DWARF Swann's and are just about equal to Stallworth (in fewer years). It's ridiculous...damn near criminal how Branch isn't in. You can say what you want about Plunkett, Flores (George Seifert has two rings and isn't getting into the Hall) and even Ray Guy. But MAN...Cliff Branch DESERVES to be in
cbaldwinjr 2 years ago
Branch numbers are closer to Blietnikoff numbers as well. Those were basically the Raiders best wide receivers during those Super Bowl years along side Dave Casper, the tight end. It took Casper years to get in the Hall of Fame as well, so don't be surprised if it takes Branch to get it.
