@graduateclass08 This IS the original version. John Mellencamp wrote it about growing up in Seymour, Indiana. But, now that you mention it, I can kind of envision Springsteen doing a version of it.

I love this song, but it's sad to me because it reminds me of my hometown of Lancaster, California that "used to be" a beautiful small town. I still live in Lancaster, but it is not the same. It is now overcrowded, filled with welfare recipients, the pool where I learned to swim is closed, and the skating rink I used to go to is closed. Long live the days when Lancaster, CA "was" a small town!

It was actually a group of separate cities strung together, but the community exuded a small town atmosphere & feel.
