I agree with you, most drugs will not be effective for the average mentally ill individual. Typically, a patient must try different kinds before they settle on one that treats the symptoms. A close friend of mine is schizophrenic and his meds are like a gift from heaven. They keep him alive.

In most civilized countries today people can only receive psychiatric help voluntarily. It is a very rare case that people are committed to psychiatric institutions by the courts. As to the use of drugs, recent studies have show that Psychological counseling has better outcomes than drugs, but that the two together have better rates of improvement than either alone.

Yes where that is still allowed it is appalling. To tell kids to "say no to drugs" while dosing them up on psychoactives is a very mixed message. Feeding hyperactive children amphetamines which they then sell to friends is very dubious too. Psychiatry is not unlike other types of medicine. If I sprain my ankle the doctor wraps it and prescribes pain medicine without laboratory tests or x-rays. If I have an incurable disease, the doctor prescribes medicines and treats me to manage symptoms and enhance my quality of life.

Psychiatry makes up these names for the same problems people have, and masses of people go into agreement with it. I can tell you from experience. When I was in elementary school they diagnosed me as "hyperactive." I was put on Dexedrine and almost died from all the side effects. I lost weight, had insomnia and acted like they gave me a lobotomy. Luckily, my mother had had experience with diet drugs (which are the same drug then) and took me to my regular doctor who immediately took me off. I remember he said to my mom "Goddamn, what did the quack put him on?" True story, I swear.

What is with children being diagnosed as "hyperactive" and having "attention-deficit disorder"? I'm definitely no expert in this area but is seems to me that the main reason these disorders are made out to be such a huge problem is that American society (at the very least) has a deplorable lack of patience and understanding of the fact that some children just aren't ready or cut out to sit passively in school for many hours a day.......................

I know that Szasz is extremely well-respected despite the unfortunate unpopularity of many of his views. I saw a psychiatrist for years of aimless sessions, but it didn't improve my condition. Maybe it would have helped someone else - I have no way of knowing.

It took a crisis, a new doctor who changed my meds, and 6 weeks of cognitive-behavioral therapy to give me the tools to become well.

But I was in my late 40s and not a child. Children are prescribed too many drugs.
