  • Gangs Of New York would've been twice as good if it had been made in the 1970's.

  • Charlie Rose is a great interviewer.

  • Yeah, so many interviewers just ask these stupid meaningless questions, and you just want to punch them.

  • this man has opened of an entire world of what acting can actually be. to me anyways. first time i have seen the acting artform as something worthy of awe. i just love perfection in whatever form it reveals itself. and this man is it for acting and i have only recently discovered him.

  • Of course now I really really want to know what Day-Lewis gets up to when he's not acting!!

  • I would like to say 'drinking milkshakes through long straws'... but I won't.

  • if i don't watch a video of a week of Scorsese in conversation, i am not fulfilled! The guy is a walking archive of human insight!

  • I've only seen a few clips of this man and i'm amazed

  • Eli...you BOY!

  • obvliviousspet:

Good one. Gotta go with Day-Lewis, though. But Seymour Hoffman is definitely worth seeing on screen, too.

  • Wish there was a movie with both of them in it. One playing the protagonist, the other the antagonist. And if only Kubrick would still be alive, he should direct it. Would be a masterpiece.

  • watching ads on youtube is fucking trippy

  • Phillip seymour hoffman or Daniel day lewis?

    Tough choice...

  • At the moment:

    1. Daniel Day-Lewis

    2. Sean Penn

    3. Phillip Seymour Hoffman

  • Yes, Sean Penn is a great actor as well, granted. He would deffinately be in my top 10. Not in my top 3 though ;)

  • Well, yeah. It's as good a list as I've seen.

  • DDL is to acting and attitude and wit what Zinedine Zidane is to soccer..

  • Lol. And they kinda look alike also. Same shape head.

  • Daniel Day-Lewis always embodies each and every character he portrays! He really truly scary and ruthless in this movie. Marty is so passionate for movies, it shows through his work.

  • Your a fucking idiot! Lewis is the best actor of our time shit heal!

  • Daniel Day Lewis's answers are so real and genuine. He does not feel that he has to come up with some rhetoric bullshit that is the making of American actors. Acting like they know while speaking nonsense.

If Marty could give him a chance to speak.

  • Daniel Day-Lewis is soooo shy and humble.

    A Real STAR!

    Americans learn a lesson.

  • wtf commercials!

  • daniel is a human first, actor only to distract himself and to learn human nature.

    i assume.

  • daniel day-lewis simply stole this movie. his character was initially a supporting role because leonardo dicaprio was the main star but his brilliant acting made it a lead role and after watching it, it seemed like it was more of a lead performance than dicaprio's. he should've won the oscar that year over adrien brody who was also good in the pianist but not as good as ddl was here.

  • I agree 100%. Out of all the movies I've ever seen, my eyes have never been glued to one character more than they were to Bill the Butcher. GANGS of NY comes out on Blu-ray on July 1st...Hell Yeah! Another Oscar snub worth comparing to this is Val Kilmer in Tombstone...he wasn't even nominated...what Bull crap!

  • day lewis steals every movie hes in

  • what the fuck are you talking about?

  • I agree with you.

Good point, although not sure about the profanity

    Rgds

    HD

  • so YOU don't even know what you're talking about?

  • yeah i'd appreciate that

  • so interesting.

  • sexart666 It's Adrien Brody bitch, get it right

  • First read my recent script and then talk you idiots. Are you comparing 'pianist' and 'gangs of New York'.I am telling that the movie 'Pianist' and the performance of Adrien Brody were overrated because of the film's Jewish tema. And then don't come to me with the spelling mistakes.English is not my Mother language.

  • Such a dickhead. I corrected the name I didn't mention a word about comparing those movies. And even if you suck at English, getting actor's name right shouldn't be that hard unless you're retarded.

  • Daniel Day Lewis deserved Oscar that year with his butcher roll in Gangs of New York but they gave it to Allen Brody (because he is a jew). That was a real shame because DDL was much way better. Then this year he showed up again with ''There will be blood''which is perfect like this one.

  • DD Lewis is jewish as well...

  • I am not sure maybe you are right but that doesn't change the fact that DDL was better than Adrian Brody.I think the film'Pianist' and the performance of Adrian Brody were overrated because of it's jewish tema..

  • "Living in Greenwich, Day-Lewis naturally found himself among some tough South London kids and being Jewish and "posh", he was often bullied" according to wikipedia.

I have never seen "The Pianist" so can't judge that.

  • u havent scene his best, my left foot, staggering

  • what you talkin bout ? cos he was a jew? idiot the guy that made Gangs happen is Jewish also so thats ur theory out the water

  • But 'Gangs of New York' is not a movie that has Jewish tema.Daniel Day Lewis 's performance was much way better and if you can't accept that don't discuss with me cinema you asshole..

  • But 'Gangs of New York' is not a movie that has Jewish tema.Daniel Day Lewis 's performance was much way better and if you can't accept that don't discuss with me cinema you asshole..

  • sounds a lot to me like daniel day lewis doesnt really know why he made the decisions he made because he wasnt himself. he was someone else for months and months. i read that he got mnemonic while filming and refused medical help because they didnt have it during the time. they convinced him to get it but to me that says he might have been living in italy on the set or in the settings and restrictions of that time period. he talked like him and was him. so when they filmed he just was.

  • DDL sucks ass at explaining shit..must be a genius thing.

  • he doesnt. its just your not in the mind frame to soak it in directly. and in that sense you are right its a genius thing. when you emmerse yourself far into a skill or profession as he has then explaining it to someone who hasnt will be hard. amateurs look at things from a far different perspective than someone who has been doing it for years and years.

    hope that makes sense :)

  • does charlie rose let daniel day-lewis sit there for a quarter of the show before talking to him, or is it just me? geez.

  • yes I noticed that as well. It is kind of annoying, but then whenever charlie does ask daniel a question, daniel gets very uncomfortable so maybe he liked it better when charlie wasn't talking to him at all.

  • He's saying it's good.

  • Mr Scorsese est définitivement l'un des plus grands réalisateurs de notre temps. cette interview nous donne la chance d'écouter ces mots. ca fait toujours plaisir.

  • This is an excellant interview in which you are given insight as to how Scorscese and Day-Lewis created the masterpiece, that is Gangs of New York.

  • Whomever is uploading these on behalf of the show needs to quality-check them, and compensate for the problems. I really enjoy the interviews, but the asynchronicity and volume should be inexcuseable. Please, whomever is responsible, please account for and adjust these uploads, or the whole point is lost.

  • don't raise your voice, the person has a point...fucko

  • haha you've done your research on me. yeah new zealand is a shitty place if you look at it like that, but if all you've got to work on is my place of origin you're argument is pretty useless. i actually despise football and i've only seen lord of the rings recently, so don't call them 'mine', k? there, not one 'f' word needed.

  • hahaha you're so frustrated. just go out and get laid man. i was referring to rugby too, and any other piece of shit sport for that matter. i said fucko to take the piss out of you for getting all agitated when someone complained about the sound quality of the video, which is piss-poor by the way. fucko, fucktastic, fuckaroo, fucktard, who gives a FUCK? they're all just variations on 'go FUCK yourself'. fuck fuck fuck. get fucked, for your own sake. this is just fucking hilarious to me. ha ha ha

  • chuck is a gay!

  • thank you!

  • ??? Commercials???

  • It's a good video, but the sound is out of synch and it's way, way too quite. Can't you re-upload it or something?

  • damn this sound...i'm on a laptop and everything is turned up full blast and i can barely hear it. great interview though, thanks.

  • jeez dude, please record with the sound turned up next time...

  • Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis (born 29 April 1957) is an Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning actor. He holds dual British-Irish citizenship.[1][2]

  • he's been living in Ireland almosto all his life and considers himself irish. he's got a clear irish accent.

  • Its clearly English! where are from? because it definitely isn't near Ireland! hes got irish blood and lives in Ireland but he ain't losing that Middle class english accent any time soon..

    English accent.....

  • born in london, but has lived mainly in ireland for a decade or so, i think.

  • when pronuncing words like "right" "light" you can definetely hear an irish accent, very clearly i would say for an irish person obviously!

  • I am Irish and that is clearly an English accent. You tit.

  • wheres daniel day lewis from?

  • London. Here in Britain.

  • No, he does not consider himself Irish. There is an interview in Movies 101 with Richard Brown, and he clearly says that he is English and does not deny it. In another interview he said that he is "a middle class Englishman."

  • I'm not a big fan of this "DDL" nickname. Why turn a nice name like Daniel Day-Lewis into something resembling a condom size? And if you want to shorten it why not just go with Daniel? There's an acronym-mania going on these days. Shame...

  • Daniel has short term memory. he's in la-la land. Daydreaming.

  • Daniel Day Lewis's answers are real and genuine. He does not feel that he has to come up with some rhetoric bullshit that is the making of American actors. Acting like they know while speaking nonsense.

  • when youre on level thats your persona, hes incredibly complex person, his eyes say it all

  • day-lewis' candidness seems calculated.

that's what you get when you look to em for subtlety- YET, I AM... intrested even if interviewee is a role

  • The syncing issues with these Charlie Rose interviews drive the hell out of me.

  • Not really one of my favorite Scorsese films, but Day-Lewis' performance in it is great. Charlie Rose is a good interviewer as well.

  • it's like watching a kung fu film. great interview though.

  • I've notcied every Charlie rose video is like this. Kinda drives ya crazy, but no none does interviews like Mr. rose. Well Worth it

  • My all time favorite actor, and in my opinion the most talented actor ever! I told my boyfriend that he fills all the spots on my celebrity "list" haha

  • Im glad deniro didn't get the part and ddl did.

    : )

  • de niro would've done well too. he's italian though.

  • Great director, great actor, great film. Enough said lol

  • Great? you mean the Greatest!!!

  • Yes i have the same problem

  • Does anyone else have the problem with the words matching up with the mouth movement?

  • The only actors I can think of which rank with Daniel Day-Lewis is Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. Day-Lewis is one of the greatest actors of all time, and he's my all time favorite.

  • I say Day Lewis surpasses the two and matches with their hero Brando

  • I would say that is very accurate.

  • Daniel Day Lewis is the BOSS!!!!!

  • Good interview, terrible sound quality, volume, and syncing

  • DDL is an amazing actor! Just listening to his demeanor and than playing a powerfull character like Bill the Butcher is incredible! What a great talent he is!

  • DDL was sooo sexy in The Last of the Mohicans... I love this movie !

  • Daniel Day-Lewis is easily one of the coolest guys on the planet. Amongst his generation of actors there are few in his league, if any. In a lot of his comments his English is so poetic, arresting.

  • Good interview Mr. Rose! Love these guys!

  • YET ANOTHER under-miced charlie rose episode? come ON, charlie rose employees, why bother posting these gems at all if we CAN'T HEAR THEM?

no accountability. welcome to a career in entertainment. "it's your fault if you can't hear this."

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Especially since I'm looking forward to seeing D.D.L in "There Will Be Blood," it's so great to have a deeper perspective of how and why he approaches acting as he does. What a true gift to cinema the two of them are!

  • same here - i can't wait to see There Will be Blood.

Daniel Day Lewis is a rarity among actors - there are very few actors in his league and it is interesting how he approaches his acting.

While filming My Left Foot he broke two ribs because of his staying in posture as someone with cerebral palsy in a wheelchair for two weeks. - just goes to show how dedicated he is.

  • thanks for posting this =]] just wish it was in synce, but oh well

  • daniel day-lewis is one of a few really smart and modest actors. beautiful smile too!:)) thank you for posting!

  • good video. great insight. first time seeing ddl put out of character.

  • this really a video to keep , but the sound is really low , i wud have preferred that u lowered the quality of image & raised the quality of sound.

    but thank you very much

    valuable video indeed

  • weird ddl is kinda sexy, never expectd his speaking voice to sound like that

  • thanks for posting..

  • the audio is very low.

  • Yes, but you have to turn it up very high to hear this.

  • meyster7 = douchebag
