I've heard people complaining about John Williams switching from Fleta to Smallman. Presuming this is a Smallman, I don't know why they are complaining..
@wondrbear I have to disagree, metal guitarist do practice in clean tones as well as distorted, they practice clean for clarity and distorted to control the distortion. See Tosin Abasi of Animal as Leaders
Learning tabs will rarely get you anywhere professionally, but you will learn to play this song. Bach himself notated using the French tablature system. If anyone is familiar with the Frank Koonce edition of the complete solo lute works, copies of the manuscripts can be found in the back. BWV 995, 997 and 1000 are in tabs.
As someone who studied classical guitar, I really admire Williams' right hand technique here. Such economy of motion. I love his interpretation of this piece, too.
Gracias a grandes artistas como JW podemos podemos disfrutar de la musica creada por los maestros del pasado.Es admirable la dedicación que requiere interpretar esta música
@wondrbear Then honestly I dont believe you listened to metal. Especially if you believe it is always distorted. Watch Children of Bodom playing Four Seasons Summer by Vivaldi. Most metal musicians learned A LOT about classical music as children.
Metal is not just noise and screaming. It is EXTREMELY neo-classical.
I've been playing guitar since the 70's. I've had to survive in my area playing covers and popular originals. I studied classical for years and years, around 20 or so. I'm still trying to learn this song after about 6 months. I can finally get through most of it slowly and evenly. But, to play it like this or Ana Vidovic, you have to either have a ton of time on your hands or just gifted. I think John Williams and others in his category are just amazing!
@Ettoreks Sorry, that is not true. Personally, i can read music to a decent standard, but i find it easier when learning a piece (especially complicated ones) to use tabulation alongside the sheet as a guide aswell as learning by ear, so too speak.
I don't see why everyone's so against tabs, for one thing , the vast majority of this song is just straight sixteenth notes, and since there's so much going on high up on the neck, tabs would probably be easier for most classical guitarists to read than standard notation... then again figuring out what to do for the right hand would be murder
I find it kind of funny when people ask for tabs and other so called music people like my self get mad at said person for mentioning such an atrocity. well just to inform some peeps like my self Lute music was written in tab like in guitar world, so there take a bite out of that shit sandwich. I read music but there is nothing wrong with anyone trying to learn this on tab. the way it was originally intended but then bach originally wrote it as a violin partita so FML right.
TABS????
@Osviwan trying to play a Bach piece for classical guitar with tabs is not quite effective, tabs are so limitating, sheet is the best and ideal for this kinda works ;),
@Osviwan im sorry mate but if you still use tabs, then theres very much to be done before you start learning a piece like this. My teacher who is on fourth semester on the musical university of Denmark is doing this piece for his bachelor examn, i wouldnt suggest trying to learn anything close this difficulty unless u a very familiar with notes.
@pedskon Bullshit. You are a music snob. Someone can learn whatever music touches them if they want to. They don't have to know how to read music. They don't have to read tab. They don't even have to be able to see.
@Osviwan Not entirely ridiculous. Much of the music for the lute and other historical plucked instruments during the Renaissance and Baroque eras was originally written in tablature.
@Osviwan how can you ask the tabs for this incredible composition!?!?!?!if you usually play chords you won't be able to play this without classical experience
the run that starts at 2:02 through to 2:24 never fails to give me goosebumps. Even when I'm playing this piece myself; all concentration is put to one side when I get to this section... I just feel very content and have no worries about anything. Bach just works so well on guitar.
I just started studying classical guitar and already im in love. I think its time to put the electric guitars away and just learn how to be like this guy. Truly beautiful
@Wishiwasinthe70s Don't be silly. You dont like the electric guitar because people who tend to play the electric guitar generally play very basic songs.
Metal for example, is one of the most closely related modern genres to classical. Metal bands use electric guitars and can make them sound just as beautiful as this. However, I do understand that Metal can be very hard to listen to simply because of screaming. You learn to like it though ;)
@Wishiwasinthe70s it's ok to play both, look for Chris Broderick for example, great classical performer, now lead guitar of Megadeth. I'm studing both at the moment, but they're totally different
John Williams says that you cant really play fast on a guitar. Most people think from the index finger to the pinky but John Williams thinks of each finger individually. All they do is go up and down and not very fast. Thats why he doesnt understand that not very many people can play as fast as him.
Very nice. Goran Sollscher is a tad smoother on this piece with his 11-string guitar. I find the American guitarists to be second to none for technical ability, but a little lacking in expression. Consider Bream, or again, Sollscher, playing any of the really technically demanding stuff like Bach. Granted the stuff wasn't written for the guitar and there was little direction for dynamics, etc. But certain passages are much better with expression. Just my two cents.
@Iwasateeninthe80s They play it with a more Romantic era feel. Which is not wrong. But usually what Bach has on the music, you play mainly because he was such a great composer. A reason I like Sollscher's is because he takes into account the Baroque period mindset, but plays it with more expressive dynamics (Romanticism). The tuning in the baroque period was about a half step below 440 and also the tempo was slower because there were'nt planes and cars that sped up our modern mindset.
@michaelarimes You can play it an octave higher, which is actually how it was originally written. You just need a barre on 2 and a difficult stretch, but it can be done.
@ClassicRockMan95 Just sit down, take scores and try hard... And don't get upset when the result is "a bit" different. I've played the classical guitar for last 30 years and, how to say it - I can still see difference :)
This performance is like a meter bar for me - and even though Williams is unreachable, I may learn a lot looking and listening that marvelous player. Thanks God for Bach & Williams too!
He probably started to play at the age of 3 and obviously had a passion for music, perhaps his closest family are very musical thus inspiring him to further his talent to study music in university and got a scholarship in classical music studies......Just a guess.
@finixhalo lol this is YT mate you gona get ppl being pricks, but most of all having a diffrance of opinon and the fact they can hide behind there pc makes them shout it even louder *looks up and smiles*
@finixhalo And so the assumption is that if someone is inspired to speak upon hearing great music, they're somehow missing the point and should "shut up?" Sorry, I can't agree... although the level of engagement does make a difference.
dmac333100 This is of course another means to itself. The reward is the means in itself, not to an end. Listen and you will appreciate every opportunity you have to express this kind of beauty and love in a myriad of possible ways. Kindness for the sake of kindness, understanding for the sake of understanding, love for the sake of love and selfless for the sake of Christ consciousness. A divine transition of the lower to the higher. The reward is in the means in itself.
I think Williams is a technically great guitarist, what makes an extraordinary combination when playing baroque pieces of composers like Bach or Scarlatti. In my opinion, John is the best in baroque, but I prefer other players in more expressive works such as Julia Florida or La Catedral.
Mr . shaq147 may be you are right but remember that Williams plays an extensive guitar repertoire and didn't sacrifie the musicality because technical difficulties (others guitarist adapt the version to its lack of guitar technique or musical solutions ) Come on don't rest merits to this big and very big and honest man everyhone are in debt with him !
For what his opinion was worth, Andres Segovia said that John Williams forehead was "touched by the hand of god". Add that to the above and you have an accurate representation of how John got here. I have a copy of Williams playing 20 Sor studies (brilliantly) when he was 17 which blows your timeline. Every student that attends a reputable Conservatory (not Observatory) of Music to study Guitar has to learn to play piano. But Williams couldn't attend a conservatory. Yes anyone can do this.
This is a true master at work, it takes such precision an accuracy to play acoustic like this, and guitarists like John Williams only inspire me to play harder. :)
I envy John Williams. He plays this prelude with such a calmness on his face - it looks almost as if he himself is absent; or as if a part of him is just contemplating quietly.
When I play the prelude from BWV 1006 my face is smirking, lots of twitching going on, the breathing becomes irregular. I wish I was as serene and detached as him...
This is a prelude from a violin Partita. Also Sinfonia to Cantata 29.

@montana5527 john williams (composer) is a different person than john williams (guitarist). but they're both amazing

@montana5527 I think JW the composer and JW the guitarist are two different JW's.

Mr . shaq147 may be you are right but remember that Williams plays an extensive guitar repertoire and didn't sacrifie the musicality because technical difficulties (others guitarist adapt the version to its lack of guitar technique or musical solutions ) Come on don't rest merits to this big and very big and honest man everyhone are in debt with him !

The first few notes rise up from the silence like the first rays of sun. Advantage Williams, big advantage Bach.
