I was born in 1991...but my mom, who was born in the 50's, played the oldies radio station all the time when I was a kid...I heard songs like this one, and for some reason, they stuck in my head...Now I'm on a YouTube quest to find songs such as "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" by Herman's Hermits, "Little Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs, "Wonderful World" by Sam Cooke, and this one...thanks Mom :)
I hated school dances! I was such a geek, but in that Fall of '68 this song came up on the list and SHE came over to ask how I was and 'you probably don't want to dance do you?' Her name was Gloria. And we not only danced. We went for pizza later and I ended up marrying her.
Gary Lewis is outstanding! His band had that rich musical quality that made some popular 60s bands standout! That voice was also amazing!! I love the genuineness of music from that era. I was born in 75' and when I went to High School in the early 90's I was mostly into the Alternative and British Rock & Ska of the mid 80's to early 90s. When I'd listen to the radio; however, I always tuned into the Kool Oldies station in my hometown, which was actually a true Oldies station.
I have a compilation of 1965 hits that was released in 1990. Most of the songs are the remasters--This Diamond Ring, Last Chance to Turn Around, Little Honda, etc. Some of the songs sound better with the updated instruments, even accounting for the new versions' attempts to sound close to the original. i.e. Robert Knight's Everlasting Love--67 versus 90 version. Cherish was another one...
I found one from The 60s Album. It is a compilation of songs that was released in 2009 but I "believe" it uses the original versions. Look for it this evening under Gary Lewis and The Playboys - This Diamond Ring (original version)
@BILLKAULITZGIRL4EVER I have upload an HD version. You can either find by searching for "This Diamond Ring HD Stereo Version", or by going to my channel. :)
It is true that Leon Russell had his fingers in this tasty pie. Gary Lewis did in music what his father could not do. And that's an admirable thing to be remembered for.
this is the theme song for mother's day. When you go out and buy your best gal something spiecal. What, why are you looking at me like that. Ain't yo mommie your best gal too
It's always easy to assume that if someone has a famous father in showbiz that made it easy for the son to "make it". But the fact is that Gary Lewis & the Playboys were major recording artists in the world of sixties pop music. They had their own sound and a number of hit records. Gary made it on talent, not nepotism.
@John1948Five I first heard this song on a pirate radio station in Dublin, Ireland, in 1965 and was greatly impressed by it. For many years I did not know who the performers were until one day I saw a movie on TV starring Jerry Lewis. In a certain scene, Jerry Lewis' character is dejected so he puts a record on the turntable and is immediately cheered up on hearing it - it was "This Diamond Ring" by Gary Lewis and the Playboys... and that was how I solved the mystery!
True it's not the original, but who cares? It sounds fantastic with all the melodic beat typical of the '60s pop music! I grew up with & danced to music like this. So much better than most of the junk out there these days
I don't understand it. YT blocked the new version I made with the mp3 you sent me. It was the exact same video as this with just the audio track switched. They say it MAY be owned by WMG. Thanks anyway Teresa.
Finally a good quality recording of this classic tune from Gary Lewis and the Playboys.I used to hopscotch to this tune as a young girl. Thanks for posting this.

@John1948Five It should be labelled "1990 remake" not "1990 remaster" That's not nit picking either...one is right, the other isn't.
