trust me....when the camera was turned OFF she got "weird" Being in the media myself for the last 24 years via network....Her OWN net is at a low bottom.
@ses418 I missed the "younger days" too. However, I think that she changed in '98 after Dr. Phil helped her win her trial. She decided to repay him by having him as a guest on her show. With his success, she seemed motivated in "finding" the next talk show host (Dr. Oz, Nate Berkus, etc), and less on her own show.
Wow- something that is actually kind, gracious, and beautiful on television. In a medium currently drowning in a sea of ugly, low life, hate-filled reality shows -this shared moment is a blessing !
I was never a huge fan of the "Oprah" show, but of what I did see of it, this was my favourite moments, where she did the MTM theme. I laughed for years watching it.
God I love this. Ugly? How? It's so wonderful to see who a much-admired person admires and goes gaga over. To the naysayers: OW's looking around because she'd reading from several different teleprompters, plus she's got a screeen behind her that she's referring to, AND she's checking other screens to see what's being captured on film--which is HOW she sees MTM. She's genuinely surprised. I've seen Oprah in movies. She's not the best actress, and I really don't think she could've cried on cue.
like she didn't know that Moore wasn't going to show up on her show....she knew well ahread in advance...I wonder why Winfrey didn't complain about there wasn't no black peoiple on the show like she complained about the Andy Griffith show and Leave it to Beaver didn't have...?apparently the Mary Tyler Moore show was immune about criticisms of racial integration.
@3dartistguy ....hmmm, do you not recall John Amos as Gordy the sportsguy on MTM? Apparently the Mary Tyler Moore show was not immune to your criticisms of racial integration.
I have no problems with racial integration....except for the fact that rcists like Oprah criticizing a great classic show just becuase there were no blacks becuase thats all she's looking for. The Dick Van Dyke show had black guest stars like Greg Morris in which Dick Van Dyke's character of Rob Petrie thought he and Mary brought home the wrong baby...but like I said, its too bad people like Oprah can't relate to any show that doesn't have a black face in it. Thats what makes her a racist.
This is one of my all time favorite Oprah moments, I love her reaction, an it's similar to mine when I met the person who inspired me, definitely lifts me up every time, amazing:)
I didn't hear Oprah say anything about an "ugly cry," and I have watched this video sooo many times. I can't get enough of it. I absolutely love her mock opening of the Mary Tyler Moore Show. It's adorable, brilliant, and lovely.
I absolutely love this. I have watched it over and over and over, and have shared it with others. I absolutely love Oprah's reaction to Mary's surprise visit, and it's wonderful how Oprah first exudes such strength and confidence, only to collapse into tears like a real, humble person. This video makes me smile, laugh, and just feel good all the way around. Thanks for posting it!
@laurensneakysmile my neighbor did...she is a stewardess...still is...She say Ms Moore is cocky when camera is off , and plays an act when the camera is on. She think's it might have been her low sugar on the plane when one of the other stewardess say she was complaining about something and then stated: " Don't you know who the hell I am???!?" That is as far as I know.
The best part is from 3:10 to 3:18, when Oprah looks away for a second wondering if this is all real, then she looks over and sees Mary, then Mary grabs her hand, like they are two sisters reunited for the first time since they were young... way cool.
It's not an ugly cry but so what if it was? Crying is healthy and if you cry that hard, then you need to. I don't like that Oprah says she can't be surprised because she doesn't want to go into the ugly cry because her whole show is about feelings.
I was hearing so much about this moment that I had to see it, but it´s not that ugly, and she actually pulled her self together very quickly, she is so calm and collected all the time it´s good the ugly cry, makes her more human...lol.luved to bad after this she didn´t let her staff do that anymore, except for this last season, with that singer...forgot his name...anyway.. thanks for posting this video
My Favorite Oprah moment... 1997 Oprah does this very cute imitation of the opening to the Mary Tyler Moore Show and then gets the surprise of Mary Tyler Moors walking onto the stage in person. In shock, Oprah goes into the 'ugly cry' as she later calls it... ha ha... Oprah does not like surprises .. but got one that day like it or not... poor thing. I will forever call that uncontrollable cry that goes bad the UGLY CRY.
@blondegal1957 I agree that she looked surprised, but something tells me she knew about it before hand. If you notice, she keeps looking off to the side before Mary shows up, as if she's expecting her. The last time, RIGHT BEFORE she comes out, you see Oprah looking to her left (our right) as if she's waiting for Mary's entrance.
Again, Oprah LOOKED shocked, but I'm not thoroughly convinced.
@beckigreen Yeah. She DEFINITELY knew. Like I said, she LOOKED shocked. She played a DAMN good "surprised person." But the frequent looks to the side beforehand gave it away. She knew.
It's not everyday your hero surprises you.she looked up to this woman as a girl

OH yes, I guess the mere handfull of appearances that John Amos made in the background, not hardly ever speaking a line, made Oprah's racial quota...
