There is a group who is inspecting any surviving Concorde's to see if they could be restored to flying condition. Restoration is under progress to get a Concorde capable of taxiing under its own power. One of the biggest goals is to get at least one flyable for the 2012 London Olympics.
The Hindenburg ended the innocence and romance of first class flying in 1937, and ushered in a nightmare called WW-2. The Concorde restored that elan in flying in an era of flying transit buses. That too ended with in flames and death as the we sunk again into a nightmare of war and fear. Now we have to get body scans, pat-downs, long lines, two-bit inflight snacks, searched, pushed and stuffed into planes like cattle. It's so sad, because there was a time before when we could soar.
Seems that a new supersonic passenger aircraft could be designed and built again, the B-1 Lancer would be a good place to start patterning after. If it wasn't for fear and lack of funds, I think it could be easily done.
Without doubt, Concorde is the most beautiful aeroplane ever made. Seen and heard her three times, been on her once. Sat in Captain Mike Bannisters seat, left hand side, G-BOAC, pushed the throttles forward, closed my eyes and imagined "v1 rotate, v2, positive climb" If you can book a tour at Manchester do it, it's amazing. I cried, sometimes still do. I hold her in the same regard as the Saturn V, but she was ours and utterly gorgeous. I miss you baby xx
Damn. If those Eyewitnesses didn't say that they saw it on fire BEFORE the metal strip, than Concorde would probably still have a chance. Concorde will never be forgotten. Her fate was sealed. ;'(
A very emotional experience for me. I was a grad aero engin and usaf flier when concorde debuted. truly a great plane. sorry too few wanted to pay the fare.
You people say what you say because you just finished watching the Documentary. When I think British I think Supermarine Spitfire. The greatest engineering achievement of the 20th century is the U.S. Space Shuttle or Saturn V Bar none.
@fcycles Think about it. It's Steve Jobs fault. Everyone is on there stupid iProduct. That's why John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald shot him. Everything should be back to normal in a couple of years.
wats all the comments about american haters..americans have always been haters and war mungerers but they are our alies so we just have to put up with the cunts..
I swear to god, they could bring this plane back today and it would make huge profits.
it's more than 10 years after 9/11 the industry is back to normal. And there is a new-found love and fondness for this plane. Absence makes the heart grow fonder as they say. No doubt a fleet of 5 airplanes would always be full of passengers.
I would not be surprised if one of these Concords unfortunately ended up in some open parksome place, where some Chav Punks spray paint it with Grafiti!
A damn shame. I hate flying. Flying terrifies me -- and I have flown A LOT. But one thing I am sad about is that I will never be able to fly Concorde. Such a majestic aircraft, such a professional piece of work, such prestige attached to it. On that plane, I would feel safe.
I know, conventional airliners are far cheaper than Concorde. But what I meant, the governments should subside the supersonic airliner development, allowing the airlines to fly the Concorde free of charges and taxes, in the ticket sales, fuel, everything related with the supersonic! Concorde was an aircraft made 40 years ago, and it's still modern. Imagine what Boeing or Airbus could do with today's technology! I don't care about luxury, champagne and caviar onboard. I care about the machine!
We live in a miserable world ruled by miserable people. Is it expensive to operate? Isn't it enviromental friendly? Is it noisy? Is it fuel thirsty? Who cares?!! They should carry on and take the challenge to correct all those issues and turn supersonic flights available to the people again. How many Airbus crashed last years and no one said a single word about retire them? I hope we have visionary people among us like we had in the 50's and 60's, otherwise we are doomed to ordinary!
@storrer66 I'm afriad that's not always practical. For instance, would you pay €10,000 for a flight from London to New York on concorde when a 767 would take 6 hours longer for that flight but only cost €450 ? How many people were prepared to pay the price premium for flying on concorde? Not many apparently. Also, fixing the problems would have cost more money than the airlines could've safely spent without risking bankruptcy - otherwise they would have tried.
@zweefvliegerNL Concorde had been off-flight for nearly 10 years. It will not take merely 'repair' to make it airworthy. It will take more than that... Technically, it will be easier to build a new one from scratch.
Hats off to the British & French for creating the Concorde. As a Singaporean, I'm glad that at least Singapore Airlines had a chance to paint its livery on one-side of one of the Concorde.
I don't mind admitting, Sir Terrence Conran speaking at the end brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat, and that's every time I watch. I'll go out on a limb and say I believe Concorde will fly again in my lifetime. Don't know how or when, but I'll believe!
I would imagine they'll make appearances at airshows, though in the current political climate I really don't think they're marketable. Absolutely not in socialist europe.
There's been a complete cultural shift from 20th Century optimism (1950s public expected moon colonies by 2000) to the climate of fear.
Call me sceptic, but i doubt Britain will ever revive its prefix of Great.
@bertyUK I could not have said that better, and the modern aviation experience has taken a step backwards; aircraft in use in the 21st century might be quieter and more fuel efficient, but are slower and even much lower in the overal quality of the flying experience, a technological and engineering experience that should inspire people to have hope and faith in the human condition rather than being an inconvienience that must be endured to reach a destination!
If you look at every plane crash documentary, they always find a catastrophically sensitive design flaw or bad maintenance issues. Safety is just relevant, we should get over it. Still this plane was a hammer blow of engineering of it's time but now we have learned so much yet sadly there is no successor..... Yet would be very curious about that. If I where insanely rich i would restore one and make it a private jet
A very unique aircraft ahead of its time but a very short period of its life making a profit which seems to have been an excuse for not implementing safety recommendations or updating avionics etc. Exploring other options other than the NY route may have lead to continuation of a smaller fleet. Oil rich countries a good start! (A shame mentioning the Sept 11 attacks being "an excuse"of part of its demise). Poor management sealed its fate.
It seems that the drive inside humanity to build something that was faster, stronger...etc...etc...etc, it just died on that day....RIP Concorde...you will be missed in our skies forever.
@bpford Yeah, and it was a shame that Concorde never went to Dubai. If it did go there, I could've seen the beautiful jet zooming over me. But it didn't.
This plane shouldve been the flagship for every airliner. Most beautiful plane I've ever seen. It still fits the 21st century, for at least 20-30 years. It's one of the best things human ever made. Space shuttle Challenger exploded as it is and not why they stopped the flights to space ... This is the most beautiful plane ever built, a concentrate of technology, a foray into palpable future technologies and all that stopped not his fault but because of an "air trash" that was poorly maintained. .. It probably fly again one day in another form and another name, but it will always be the Concorde will be in our hearts: (

@MilleniumSlickRick I know the answer to why...... Atomic Bomb is a war type of machine and concorde is a passenger travel type of machine benfefit to men kind like scince we learn that what is benefit to man kind and what destroys........
Finally an honest documentary only missing that there were no tyre marks or tyre residue on the DC10 strip. The strip in question was fully malleable to any shape and well beyond the takeoff V1 (And V2) takeoff points. (BEA BS unfortunately strikes again). Otherwise a beautiful aircraft ahead of it's time and if the recommended safety modifications were undertaken with a few upgrades done we most likely would still see it flying today.
The sad thing is that it wouldn't take too much to upgrade concorde, put in new state-of-the-art computers, the new super cruise rolls royce engings on the euro fighter (that can go super-sonic without after burners). The airframe is still in excellent shape the millitary to it to aircraft all the time nasa has done it with the shuttle. Richard Branson wanted to buy the BA fleet of concordes and they wouldn't let him out of pride.
Have you noticed how all of the problems only happened to Air France Concorde... the crash.... the other accident with the ripped hole in the wing.. AND the fuel leak....
So they decided to stop running it and we couldnt do it without them so.. In theory it is their fault that it isnt flying now.... Sort of.
It seems to me that Air France is the one that had all the problems with Concorde with maintaining the fleet and all... Not British Airways... Sad that Concorde is gone...

Éclatement du pneu n° 2 entraînant la détérioration du déflecteur d'eau. Le réservoir 1 avait subi une perforation de petites dimensions, vraisemblablement par un morceau du déflecteur.
@bluewhale18 : I do not think the British and French governments ALLOW selling of such technologies. Not at any price! R&D money spend at over 1.5Billion Sterling.
We are very lucky to have a Concorde here in Manchester, UK - as for various flights including Test Flights Cpt Mike Bannister flew her to Shannon & Dublin in my native Ireland - I am convinced to this day that someone acting for the US sabotaged Concorde at Paris hence the bitter US led legal battle in the French courts so it is most likely that the US did sabotage Concorde, given the fact that for years they denied landing rights at JFK
Why the flap over sonic booms? I grew up with sonic booms that probably came from F-111s out of Barksdale AFB (the cold war was still on when I was little). I also remember my mother reading to me about Concorde (yes, I was VERY little). When I asked her if there were any Concordes flying over our house, she said that they couldn't because of "spoiled sports" wouldn't let it fly to Texas. "Spoiled sports," them's was her exact words.
the americans really benefitd from 9/11.....bush gt a reason to attack oil rich iran, lease owner of twin tower gt 7 billion dollars. concorde went down which made thngs easy for 747 . etc
If supersonic flight was available today, who would take it? I know I certainly would for the curvature of the earth's atmosphere, and just the general sensation I get while flying...but would anyone actually do it?
continental found guilty for the Concorde crash. 10 years it took 2 come to that conclusion. The guy who fitted the titanium strip has been given a suspended 15month sentence.
Shasha what are you on about? That post bears no relevance. Remember pal, there wouldn't be an America like the one you enjoy if it wasn't for the British and the Europeans... Back in your box.
Unbelievably sad outcome for the most beautiful bird to grace our skies. Having them as museum pieces is no better than caging a wild animal. Jeremy Clarkson got it absolutely right in saying the loss of Concorde was the biggest step backwards in aviation history. Exhilaration has been replaced with monotony.
@BOACMach2 Well, the stupid British spend billions of dollars on stupid wars with us the Americans for the National Security of Israel in the 21st century, and do not spend money on amazing technologies like the Concorde. The world seems to be upside down. LOL.. In the next 50 years the British will look like Indians and Mongoles. Nothing like the Concorde will ever take place again in that Anglo-Saxon nation becoming a racial third world. LOL..... Stupid WW2!!!!!!
@shugabuns Have you been to England? Have you seen people who are migrating to England? I was there in 2006 for vacation. I am not saying that the Concorde's demise was due to the people of the Asian continent invading the island for a better life. However, if England goes forward the way it does, projects like the Concorde will not exist anymore. The British people have to have respect for their own kind and not let the people who where their subjects for centuries invade and take over.
@shasha1873 Oh boy. How did we get to talking about England's demographic? I understand what you are saying, but it's better left for the natural citizens there to sort out. Not to mention that it is a very politically sensitive issue where one can easily be tagged as "racist". I wouldn't carry on with this if I were you. You are sticking your nose where it doesn't belong.
@shasha1873 As for Concorde, it's fate was sealed due to a variety of circumstances. Concorde was built by BAC and Aeropostale(sp?). Due to a series of acquisitions, Airbus ultimately ended up providing support and parts for Concorde. As a result, that plane's survival was jeapordized once Airbus took over as they viewed her as more of a liability than an asset. Once Airbus pulled the plug, game over. Concorde cannot fly without a supplier for parts.
@Trainlover300 yes I will not accept there was a design fault in concorde to me it has one of the best safety records ! If it was up to me they will be still flying and I think this one of the Reason's why BA have lost money. Concorde you make me proud to be british god bless

peterFans 10 months ago

Sort of.
MrNSheikh 10 months ago 3
It seems to me that Air France is the one that had all the problems with Concorde with maintaining the fleet and all... Not British Airways... Sad that Concorde is gone...

@seiaaro 9 août 1981 : G-BOAG au décollage de New York JFK.

@seiaaro 29 janvier 1988 : G-BOAF au décollage de Londres Heathrow.

i bet if British Airways brought back 1 concorde it would be so popular it would turn a profit even with today's fuel prices

Come on, Richard Branson. After taking over music labels, other airlines, space ships,.... Why not a supersonic airline?
acks39 1 year ago
Why the flap over sonic booms? I grew up with sonic booms that probably came from F-111s out of Barksdale AFB (the cold war was still on when I was little). I also remember my mother reading to me about Concorde (yes, I was VERY little). When I asked her if there were any Concordes flying over our house, she said that they couldn't because of "spoiled sports" wouldn't let it fly to Texas. "Spoiled sports," them's was her exact words.

BOACMach2 1 year ago
@BOACMach2 Well, the stupid British spend billions of dollars on stupid wars with us the Americans for the National Security of Israel in the 21st century, and do not spend money on amazing technologies like the Concorde. The world seems to be upside down. LOL.. In the next 50 years the British will look like Indians and Mongoles. Nothing like the Concorde will ever take place again in that Anglo-Saxon nation becoming a racial third world. LOL..... Stupid WW2!!!!!!

@shasha1873 Stupid comment.
shugabuns 1 year ago
@shugabuns We do not like facts do we? LOL........ Are you British?
shasha1873 1 year ago
@shasha1873 No, I am American. Your comment is incredibly ignorant, nor does it have anything to do with the demise of Concorde.
The British will look like Indians and Mongolians? Are you really suggesting Britain will become a third world nation?
shugabuns 1 year ago
@shugabuns Have you been to England? Have you seen people who are migrating to England? I was there in 2006 for vacation. I am not saying that the Concorde's demise was due to the people of the Asian continent invading the island for a better life. However, if England goes forward the way it does, projects like the Concorde will not exist anymore. The British people have to have respect for their own kind and not let the people who where their subjects for centuries invade and take over.
shasha1873 1 year ago
@shasha1873 Oh boy. How did we get to talking about England's demographic? I understand what you are saying, but it's better left for the natural citizens there to sort out. Not to mention that it is a very politically sensitive issue where one can easily be tagged as "racist". I wouldn't carry on with this if I were you. You are sticking your nose where it doesn't belong.
shugabuns 1 year ago
@shugabuns Well, you do have a good point there. I can not disagree with that.

Concorde cannot fly without a supplier for parts.
shugabuns 1 year ago
@shugabuns That is very true. Without parts it could not continue.
