Great guitar solos, but why are the pictures all wrong? When stormbringer is playing there is a picture of MkII and when Black Knight there is a picture of Fireball. Well, Ritchie rules.

His soloing in the Burn track Lay Down, Stay Down is sensational imo but heck they're all fabulous even though the man himself may disagree. Cheers for posting.
Another very good solo is in "Lay Down, Stay Down" from the "Burn" album. "A 200" (also from "Burn" - some really good playing on that record) has a good one, too - he has a really wicked tone.
,"Knockin' At Your Back Door" has a cool one.
I am referring purely to studio solos. If you want to talk live, there's a lot of good stuff on "Made In Japan", of course.
Unlike many guitarists, he contunued to improve in the 70's, I think his best solos were with Rainbow, for the most part.
In my oppinion he's the best guitarist in the world.
I also like the solos of "The Battle Rages On", "Anya", "The Cut Runs Deep" and "Dead or Alive" very much. And I miss them in this list, there almost only the solos of the "old" songs.
Blackmore you are a God of the guitar i will have so wanted to see yourself in concert in 1993 for instance but too young : (. To listen to the solo d 'highway star my friends nobody can make better.
Not a bad list. Have you heard the guitar work of SOTW on the Roger Glover mix? It's with the 25 year edition of Machine Head. Extraordinary! And Maybe I'm a Leo from the same disc.
How about the one from the First Movement with the London Philharmonic 1968?
Jesus a great choice but what has happened to Mistreated? Please listen to it , it's my all time favourite but for some reason it's rarely recognised truly a great solo.
right choice..child in time is best guitar solo ever..the melody is beautiful..the great guitarist must be genius and creative in making good melody..
excellent choices all!! For live recordings the list would have to be topped by. 1993 Anya in Stuttgart. You fool no one at Cal. jam, Greensleeves and Rainboe Munick 1977.
Peut etre le meilleur solo de l'histoire du rock....Avec celui de Page sur Stairway to heaven dans "the song remain the same" et celui dans rock Bottom de UFO par Michael Schenker.....
The 2 solos from the Made in Japan live track "Strange Kind of Woman" . I have the 3 disc live in Japan CD and all solos from that song over three nights were great!
Good choice of child in time at 1, that whole song is incredible. I would also move highway star up although its been said many times. Oh and for all blackmore fans, i suggest you listen to catch the rainbow from the album rainbow live in germany. The solo is incredible
Child in time can be compared to stairway to heaven. I do agree but still don't know why it wasn't listed in top 100 greatest solos when highway star and lazy were.
@gillan5 yeah, rolling stone knows bollocks about anything. How the fuck can Randy Rhoads be the 85th best guitarist Also, how come John Lenon and even Bob Dylan are better singers than Freddie Mercury. They`re all a buch of idiots

@kwagmyrefrontman Unintentionally, I never read this magazine but I do know their shitty lists which are a complete mess. Judging is at least not easy. @itchie88 I know...but Ritchie was too far. Not saying he was not good, Ask Yngwie Malmsteen who's really His DADDY!! I remember the Stone Cold live version without a solo..LoL , Maybe it was his temper! and I just say maybe.
deep purple is not the ancestor of metal.Particulary when we talk about guitar. The ancestor of metal is Black sabbath, and ozzy osbourne.the next time you will talk, I hope you will say something true.
The first true pioneers of rock were The Kinks, they were the first ever! The first ever to create a heavy riff, a true heavy riff, before anyone... That's by facts. Deep Purple are a part of the pioneers of metal too... Black Sabbath wasn't the first.
ok, here is how i believe the way metal is... deep purple was in on metal, as well for led zeppelin and black sabbath... black sabbath was the first band to actually take full account into metal...
i JUST recently got into deep purple (i know sad ) but man, why doesn't their guitarist get the recognition he deserves. i hear all these kids yap about metallica and metal this and that. This guy blows them out the park
Ok, Deep Purple owns but you just look stupid when you say that kids yap about Metallica and metal. There is nothing wrong with metal and Metallica. Besides, Deep Purple is early metal.
Your taste is just too small and short for you to appreciate other styles of music, so you just insult them, while I, who have a much bigger taste in music, just laughs on how stupid your insult is...
Blackmore fag? AHAH, in your dreams!! The only fag here is you. Feeling lonely and careless? I'm sorry, looks like nobody here can help you. Try somewhere else. Good luck.
A mi me flipa el solo de guitarra de "The Mule" Pero no el que sale en el video, sino el de la cancion que no sale en el Made in Japan, sino en el otro.. xP en el minuto 3:39.... es alucinante.. corto.. pero me encanta xD
Ooooaahh...I love it, April is the best solo in this piece I think but they're all killers. My all time DP favorite must be Son Of Alerik, anyway; Purple ROCKS!!!
Anybody who likes Ritchie Blackmore MUST get the new double DVD "Deep Purple - History, Hits & Highlights '68-'76".
I thought he was the greatest ever before watching this DVD. There's plenty of never before seen footage and Ritchie in particular shines as the most gifted guitarist of his generation, period. He was doing things back in '69-'70 (when he was barely 25yo) that nobody else could even dream about at the time. Even by today standards, his playing is absolutely outstanding. A must-have
I love that you picked up on that particular No No No solo from Fireball. Definitely one of my faves. I agree with all of your selections. In my opinion, both solos from Made in Japan's Strange Kind of Woman should be included, as well as the Child in Time solo from that same album instead of the studio version. In my personal list I also have the solo from Burn's "A" 200 as one of his best. My personal all-time favourite is Pictures of Home though.
not necessarily from rainbow live, i mean the studio deep purple version is in itself one giant solo (kinda). but yeah, all in all mistreated has to be here too.
i wandered a couple of months ago how the hell someone could put the mule in his top 15 solos of blackmore ? the mule is paiceys song, ( put moby dick for the next page solo - is the same ) now I understand you don t know blackmore at all. keep on listening to the man in black, he will grow on you and you will understand then why so many will support him and vote for him, this man might be a very unpleasant man , but can he play the guitar !!!!
I know I'm disappointed, right now... My list would have friggin' change... read my info... I mean I missed so much of his solos! Like Mistreated! (but this list is for studios, if it was live solos, well this list would be all live solos, lol)... I understand him, I grow up with him... Don't get me wrong, Mr. Know it all about Blackmore. You learn something everyday about each guitarist, and well you will still be learning with me. Even if you are more learned than me, no reason to put me down.
And O yeah! The Mule was a live version (from Made in Japan) which I'm also disappointed of, because I wanted only studio songs... And man, this video was a long time for me!
for u noobs out there who think page is better than blackmore, ok, its your personal opinion, but blackmores solos are better composed, diversed, far more superior technically played, than pages
thats true, but blackmore goes beyond 12 bar blues, and thats something page could never do!page is just another bluesman, very skillfull but nothing else
Talent is not from how skilled you are or what amazing tricks you do, it's about the music that comes out of it, that is what only matters, the music, we listen to the music... But Page did went over 12 Bar Blues... Seriously check other songs then Led Zeppelin's most used ones. Page did great stuff, Blackmore did great stuff, just leave it at that, both are amazing. Both are unique in their own ways, both have virtuous skills in their own way.
well, not for me,i cant even put page and blackmore in same leauge. page is just another copy of clapton, who was at hes best in Cream, very overatted player. yes, LZ had more simplefied and catchy and good writtien songs then DP,but musiclly we both know who has advantage.sorry for spelling
That's your opinion... But there is different levels of music, doesn't mean one is better than the other... Look if I ask you a question if Techno was better than Rock? You would probably answer NO... And if I asked you if people who make Techno are less talented than people who make Rock? You would say yes. But seriously no... There's people who are talented in one or another at the same level. I mean both DP and LZ are different but similar. Both are musically equal! But Jon Lord is an extra.
Led Zeppelin has some simple songs and has difficult songs... Deep Purple has some simple songs and has some difficult ones... Okay... We both know that Deep Purple wrote a lot of more songs than Led Zeppelin... But let's simplify it into DP Mk2... Then they're pretty equal.
Blackmore is technically far superior to Page although I love them both. Ritchie's solos are much more interesting to me and far more singular. Where Page excels, is in overall music production. And for anyone who has ever seen both bands live (I have seen both many time dating back to 1970 when I was 10) Page has always been very sloppy.
Well, that's YOUR personal opinion too!! Cause Jimmy Page is more versatile and innovator. Can't talk about composition, almost every solos were improvised. Page was the best in 1971-75, before starting heroin. Blackmore was the best in 1976-78. Then came Eddie Van Halen xD
more verstile?in what way? hiting a violin bow on guitar isnt all versatile, and what did he invented?i could agree with racer500gp everything he said, and yes it is my opinion. u said ritchie was best from 76-78. thats just wrong, he did a great job in burn(74), stormbringer(75) machine head(72) and in rock(70). cause of ritchie was able to improvise far better than other guitarist, in my eyes hes the best
One can be more skilled, one can be more versatile, one can be more fast...
But it'll always depends on the music that comes out from the instrument, not how you are playing it...
PS Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore were both great at improvisation, don't get me wrong, no one is better between each other, both do some sick improvisations...
following you for while now, dont put this thing on the net when you are such a Page admirer, I know you like blackmore a lot too, but you can t hide page in your comments he is your favourit, nothing wrong with that, you will not convert the blackmore fans into page fans, it took me 25 years to admit that page can play some guitar, but when i see people say that page is better ??? common man, one note of blackmore in 2009 and you know it is him .. cant say that of page...
Speed King Piano Version is good....although the Hammond Version was Crazier

ok, here is how i believe the way metal is... deep purple was in on metal, as well for led zeppelin and black sabbath... black sabbath was the first band to actually take full account into metal...

i JUST recently got into deep purple (i know sad ) but man, why doesn't their guitarist get the recognition he deserves. i hear all these kids yap about metallica and metal this and that. This guy blows them out the park
MexicanCouple 2 years ago 3
And get into Jon Lord too! Awesome too!!!
And if you are very musical I can tell a few artists and their songs, you might get interested into...
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
Ok, Deep Purple owns but you just look stupid when you say that kids yap about Metallica and metal. There is nothing wrong with metal and Metallica. Besides, Deep Purple is early metal.

Blackmore and Purple invented Fag rock.
Tony Iommi and Sabbath are the real deal.
zigzag909 2 years ago
You're a fag... Isn't all music real?
Your taste is just too small and short for you to appreciate other styles of music, so you just insult them, while I, who have a much bigger taste in music, just laughs on how stupid your insult is...
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
Blackmore fag? AHAH, in your dreams!! The only fag here is you. Feeling lonely and careless? I'm sorry, looks like nobody here can help you. Try somewhere else. Good luck.

There isn't song with the name Machine Head. This is the title of the album. The solo in no12 is taken from the song Pictures of Home.

Ooooaahh...I love it, April is the best solo in this piece I think but they're all killers. My all time DP favorite must be Son Of Alerik, anyway; Purple ROCKS!!!
geirekul 2 years ago
Thanks,
It made my day hearing all those solos together.
For those dicussing what musical genre Deep Purple are, I believe Deep Purple are too awesome to fit in a box.

A must-have
mgalbu 2 years ago 5
I love that you picked up on that particular No No No solo from Fireball. Definitely one of my faves. I agree with all of your selections. In my opinion, both solos from Made in Japan's Strange Kind of Woman should be included, as well as the Child in Time solo from that same album instead of the studio version. In my personal list I also have the solo from Burn's "A" 200 as one of his best. My personal all-time favourite is Pictures of Home though.
Check my profile for some RB solo covers! :)

yes! finally someone else who agrees with me about the a200 solo... its just SOOO good! i cant even like understand it.

Nice job man but most definitely should have included the solo on Mistreated from Rainbow Live
OneSillyTrucker 2 years ago
not necessarily from rainbow live, i mean the studio deep purple version is in itself one giant solo (kinda). but yeah, all in all mistreated has to be here too.
byakuganlord 2 years ago

linket,
i wandered a couple of months ago how the hell someone could put the mule in his top 15 solos of blackmore ? the mule is paiceys song, ( put moby dick for the next page solo - is the same ) now I understand you don t know blackmore at all. keep on listening to the man in black, he will grow on you and you will understand then why so many will support him and vote for him, this man might be a very unpleasant man , but can he play the guitar !!!!
ritchie63 2 years ago
I know I'm disappointed, right now... My list would have friggin' change... read my info... I mean I missed so much of his solos! Like Mistreated! (but this list is for studios, if it was live solos, well this list would be all live solos, lol)... I understand him, I grow up with him... Don't get me wrong, Mr. Know it all about Blackmore. You learn something everyday about each guitarist, and well you will still be learning with me. Even if you are more learned than me, no reason to put me down.
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
And O yeah! The Mule was a live version (from Made in Japan) which I'm also disappointed of, because I wanted only studio songs... And man, this video was a long time for me!
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
no problem man, keep up the good work !
i am listening again all this 15 solos right now , thanks for sharing ... like it
ritchie63 2 years ago
for u noobs out there who think page is better than blackmore, ok, its your personal opinion, but blackmores solos are better composed, diversed, far more superior technically played, than pages
zenica12 2 years ago
No, they're just both different... One is more classical-based and the other is more blues-based...
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
thats true, but blackmore goes beyond 12 bar blues, and thats something page could never do!page is just another bluesman, very skillfull but nothing else
zenica12 2 years ago
Talent is not from how skilled you are or what amazing tricks you do, it's about the music that comes out of it, that is what only matters, the music, we listen to the music... But Page did went over 12 Bar Blues... Seriously check other songs then Led Zeppelin's most used ones. Page did great stuff, Blackmore did great stuff, just leave it at that, both are amazing. Both are unique in their own ways, both have virtuous skills in their own way.
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
well, not for me,i cant even put page and blackmore in same leauge. page is just another copy of clapton, who was at hes best in Cream, very overatted player. yes, LZ had more simplefied and catchy and good writtien songs then DP,but musiclly we both know who has advantage.sorry for spelling
zenica12 2 years ago
That's your opinion... But there is different levels of music, doesn't mean one is better than the other... Look if I ask you a question if Techno was better than Rock? You would probably answer NO... And if I asked you if people who make Techno are less talented than people who make Rock? You would say yes. But seriously no... There's people who are talented in one or another at the same level. I mean both DP and LZ are different but similar. Both are musically equal! But Jon Lord is an extra.
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
Led Zeppelin has some simple songs and has difficult songs... Deep Purple has some simple songs and has some difficult ones... Okay... We both know that Deep Purple wrote a lot of more songs than Led Zeppelin... But let's simplify it into DP Mk2... Then they're pretty equal.
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
Bill you have to post a Jimmy Page's Top 15 solos to shut these kids xD
ronimatos90 2 years ago
I had, but WMG...
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
oh right :(
ronimatos90 2 years ago
Blackmore is technically far superior to Page although I love them both. Ritchie's solos are much more interesting to me and far more singular. Where Page excels, is in overall music production. And for anyone who has ever seen both bands live (I have seen both many time dating back to 1970 when I was 10) Page has always been very sloppy.
racer500gp 2 years ago
Page at 1970 Royal Albert Hall wasn't sloppy... Just when he started hitting heroin, it made an impact.
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
Well, that's YOUR personal opinion too!! Cause Jimmy Page is more versatile and innovator. Can't talk about composition, almost every solos were improvised. Page was the best in 1971-75, before starting heroin. Blackmore was the best in 1976-78. Then came Eddie Van Halen xD
ronimatos90 2 years ago
more verstile?in what way? hiting a violin bow on guitar isnt all versatile, and what did he invented?i could agree with racer500gp everything he said, and yes it is my opinion. u said ritchie was best from 76-78. thats just wrong, he did a great job in burn(74), stormbringer(75) machine head(72) and in rock(70). cause of ritchie was able to improvise far better than other guitarist, in my eyes hes the best
zenica12 2 years ago
THERE IS NO BETTER OR BEST!
There is only your favorite...
LinkBulletBill 2 years ago
hi linkbulletbill,
following you for while now, dont put this thing on the net when you are such a Page admirer, I know you like blackmore a lot too, but you can t hide page in your comments he is your favourit, nothing wrong with that, you will not convert the blackmore fans into page fans, it took me 25 years to admit that page can play some guitar, but when i see people say that page is better ??? common man, one note of blackmore in 2009 and you know it is him .. cant say that of page...
