the bar-kays did not bite when they made son of shaft who do you think isaac hayes had in his band when he made the original record shaft ? it was the bar-kays.

Allen A. Jones produced this with some synth programming from Winston Stewart. If Larry Dodson had any input it must have been very small seeing how he is simply a vocalist and would have merely written a few lyrics here and there.
this is a barkays produced lp, u have no clue and comments like yours really piss off true funk fans. prince has absolutely positively nothing to do with this, or any real funk, ever.
Wow Bar-Kays prouduced? That's awesome. I have their song "Attitude" on my mp3.
Also, I am a fan of the Mpls. Sound music..I admit I get tired of hearing Prince getting all credit for the slightest funk-infused tracks. Granted he played a big role but a lot of the artists in that genre in the 80s were very talented/came out with classic gems and the artists outside of Mpls. Sound are awesome too :)
I'm a record producer from years back and what you may want to know is that the Barkays made a living on sounding like others bands and YES this was a Prince\Time stolen groove easy my friend.
You are right my friend some groups did that never defining their own sound. Examples with the Barkeys "son of shaft" Freaky behaviour ripp off of Rick James super freak
freak show ripp off of midnight starr no parking on the dance floor
Oh?the production info on the back of this LP about Johnny Allen and WInston & Larry is all BS? Sure, pal. Very credible. Funny how they had hits a good ten years prior to both Prince & Time releasing record 1. Or was that Prince & Morris I watched in Wattstax '74? Anyway, the liner notes on this album speak for themselves. try to come up with a shred of substantiation about this anti-BKs crap and then how nonderivative THE TIME ARE?!? you must have been producing Bing Crosby, bigshot.
Damn!, I thought i was the only one that remembered "Too Lonely"!!!! That song was the shit back in the day and sounds better than most of the stuff that's out now.
Were these guys produced by Prince or Morris Day?!! The begining kinda sounds like the ending keyboard solo to "The Walk" (just before Morris talks to "Grace" aka Vanity)!
@Azone01 No these guys were from Memphis Tn. Produced by Allen Jones who produced the Barkays. Like I told someone before Allen Jones was a master mind. His way of thinking was if there is a song HOt on the radio take elements from it and put it right back out there, so I guss that's why you thought Prince/Minneapolis sound.

@ Azone, I'm with you there - I thought the same. Not sure if they had anything to do with each other, though.

I see a +5 up there,it's the Minneapolis sound homeboy, even the mighty Bar-Kays copied it,check there albums from the early '80's!

concurred , Barkays was a great group but the second phase was not original. Every hit from the 80's was a rip off of a previous year style !

Exactly what I thought. That sound was popular in the early 80s. A very distinctive sound.
