can anyone help me with seperate speeds in maya like making mercury orbit the sun and mercury;s moon orbit it and have 2 seperate speeds?????? send me a message....
fantastic tutorials i wish you was my tutor, i just need to know how do i create materials is there no library like in cad, soliworks etc do i have to create the materials from scratch, i heard something about a shader library but don't understand what it is or where to find it, please help and again thank you
simply the best tutorial ever!....i am totally new to maya, i am expert in cad and intermediate in solidworks, your lessons have helped me heaps, my only issue is understanding where all the materials are for rendering, i am used to a library of materials in cad and solidworks, things like metals, woods, glass, plastics etc where are they in this programe?
Just wanted to say how well all your tutorials were. I am just learning, and have been searching all over for tutorials, and yours are by far the most complete, and easy to use out there. My only suggestion would be possibly to change the title of the lessons to something like Lesson 1 part 1 of 6. Lesson 1 part 2 of 6 It was a bit confusing at first.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do these. Outstanding job.
I just wanted to thank you for the time you took out of your schedule to do these Maya Tutorial Videos. I use Autodesk Architectural Desktop in my work. I had no idea what Maya was, or how it could be used to benefit me in any way. I have throughly enjoyed these short sessions on Maya. I am 50 years old. New tricks for an old dog don't come easy. However, your way of presenting Maya, made it easy, fun to learn. I have subscribed to your videos, anticipating some new relaeases. Thanks Again
i liked your videos but i could not find the order of the session 2...........it seems that some videos in session1 and two have been mixed up.........
u taught me the basics of maya.........thank you ........
i wish you could teach us how to make moving human like structures........
Hi, your tutorials have been great! But I was just wondering, what tutorial did you refer to for us to look up on youtube if we were stuck for inspiration at 5:56?
I don't know whether my other comment showed up. I didn't see it, but I just want to say that I took Maya for 2 semesters at NYU years ago. YOUR lessons are on that calibur or above, and I would seriously pay to take an online class from you if offered.
I'm having the same problem with Quicktime. Please help. One more question is there a certain textbook your students use? If so what is it. Thanks a ton you have helped me tremendously.
Great tutorials, but when i try and render it, there's no Quicktime Movie, and when i try AVI there's a blank file, i also tried changing the compressor to Microsoft Windows Media Video, and when i try to play it it doesn't recognize the file type, what can i do?
My name is Tarjei, i'm 12 years old, and i'm from Norway. I don't know if you are too busy to answer a kid's stupid question about Maya, i know you're pretty busy as a teacher, but please answer anyway. Thanks.
Okay here we go; I've made an animation (your exercise 3, from the Learn Maya-series) with Autodesk Maya 8.5 Personal Learning Edition.
How do i render the entire animation and make it to a movie file?
I would definitely have to agree with most if not all of these people. Thanks Professor for teaching me the basics of this program, it really helped and i would say this experiment is a success.
I just want to say Thank You, Professor Robert Consoli and team for making this tutorial. I comprehended each video correctly and that has more to do with the structure of the tutorial and not the latter which is how myself or anyone would understand them. I can say I'm pretty much comfortable now into building within Maya. I now have the basic knowledge to do what I finally want to do. I don't have the right computer for it, but I hope to post a video response someday.
Great tutorial's!... just about to start the exercises. Thank you very much for doing these, i'm currently working on animation feature as an assistant editor and this is helping me leaps and bounds to understand what is going to happen at the next stage in the process.
oh, on my last reply abotu the images..i dont mean as a Surface, is there a way i can make them actual objects? or would i make a rectangle. and make the Surface under hypershade, a image i want?

If you are using a Windows platform, try rendering as an .avi file. Sometimes this will result in an empty file- if it does, change the compression settings to 'Microsoft AVI' or experiment with the other options. Remember, you can also export animation as a series of bitmap stills that are numbered sequentially. It is then a simple process to import the numbered stills into a video editing software package such as Premier or Final Cut.
TY, this will help me alot, as you cna see my display account is HPTelevision, i do all the graphic editing for the show, and im in charge of gettin our name out there for Sponsors and so on, a little town, but its a Start for me in teh long run. :) Maya is where i want my intrest to go. so im tryin my hardest.
Thanks for the vids.... Im from Argentina and i have a problem with the rendering part.
When I open the rendering settings menu I can't find the "quick time movie" format because it just isn't there. Because of this, I can do nothing but select another format ( I chose "avi"), but when i try to open it, I can't. So, is there something I can do to solve this problem?
Really awesome tutorial videos. Unfortunately I was one of the many that suffered being unable to render as a Quicktime file, having the Learner Edition... But since that's a common problem with that version I'm hoping when I get the full Maya 8.5 package, that it'll be sweet.
I'm going to get started on those exercises right away. Thank you so much for the help. :D
When you get a message like this one it essentially means you've made one of a hundred possible mistakes. Restart the programme and start the rendering process from the beginning.
I restart the program and i make all steps again and again appear this message. You can scribe down step-by-step what i need to do. What i need to select...
hmm my batch won't even rneder the animation....not even an image...and i can't select quick time movie as an image format...i would be very greatfull if you could help
If you read through the comments below and in part 6/1 you'll see some possible solutions to your rendering problems. It might be a good idea to work out the mechanics of rendering on your particular machine using a very simple animation as a tester.
HullUniLecturer, I'm considering joining the university of hull, the problems are that I'm from Lithuania, I'm not very good at English, although I understand everything clearly, and I don't really know is it possible to join the university for me like an international student.Btw what exams should I choose for this profession, because I'm finishing 11th grade, and I don't know what to choose. I really love CG, I've been studying 3ds max for two years, furthermore I started using maya and zbrush
Our Digital Design programmes at The University of Hull at Scarborough are excellent, and we teach students from all over the world. I will contact you with the Lithuanian equivalent qualifications necessary to enter our programmes, and we have experts on staff who can advise you on the minimum English requirements as well (your written English is certainly easy to read and understand). I'll send you an e-mail from my University address in the next day or two. Good luck.
A quick question... For some reason I'm not getting the option to render as a quicktime movie. I have the latest version of quicktime installed, but it's not showing up on the list of file types. Any suggestions?
I'm assuming you are working on a windows platform. If you read the comments below you'll see that users have had a variety of rendering problems using the Maya Personal Learning Edition on windows machines. All sorts of unpredictable things seem to happen that defy explanation, or are a combination of problems. I'm running the official version of the programme on a Mac, so I haven't personally experienced these problems, but I heartily encourage your fellow users to offer any suggestions...
my question is, for example in the moleclular structure, how do you add more objects and they not overlapp in either the same place or on an inexsitent line.
If you are having trouble seeing exactly where your objects are in relation to each other, click on the 'four-view' button on the bottom left hand side of your screen.
i'm talking about when you attach objects to motion paths. if i try and add more than one object at either different times or the same time they end up in the same spot and sometimes one of them travels in the same shape of a motion path just translated differently. or should i just forget the path(s) and just translate and motion key set?
errrr.......what? (if you don't feel like explaining it and it was in one of the previous tutorials just tell me which part and i can take it from there)
Thank you so much. You guys are amazing. I have been trying to figure out this program for the last few days that I have nearly went insane. The manuals made no sense to me in the overall scheme of things until I followed your instructional videos and discovered out the definition of certain tool items and properties involved. THANK YOU!!!
I'll be submitting my video within the next couple of weeks.
Hi,is there another way to choice between the objects on my perspective especially when we have many objects in one place , is there a list shows what object that I have created in the scene
Hey thanks for the tutorials they were really great.. i've got one question tho- has anyone anyidea how to render out a movie with a transparent background (in photoshop terms) so i can fit it into a film. I've tried rendering with the alpha channel but i still get a black background?? any thoughts?
Fill the background of your animation with either bright green or solid blue ( a surrounding sphere works the best). Make sure that the colour you choose is not used anywhere else in your animation clip. Import the clip into video editing software such as Final Cut Pro or Premiere and use the Chroma Key effects to make the background disappear. Good Luck.
Hi.thank you it is really great idea,I have one question how can I make to different paths with different timing for example the moon moving around the Earth and the Earth moving around the sun.
From what I can determine, the answer lies in some combination of the software version of Maya that you are using and the hardware platform that you are working on. Since I don't work on your exact combination it's difficult for me to give you the solution. So I can only encourage your fellow animators out there who have have faced this problem and solved it to suggest a solution.
Hi, just like to say great tutorial and I have followed them all the way through, I am stuck at the end with the rendering, when I try to export the animation I don't have the option to export as .mov ( i do have quicktime on my computer though)so I exported it as .avi but when I go to view my animation the file 0kb. I dont no what to do, can you help?
Hi naptic. I think you'll find that you need to look at your rendering settings. At moment it sounds as if you're rendering out your animation as a sequence of Maya IFF images. Part Six - Section 1 of the tutorials covers rendering, so maybe that could help you.
I really like the style of these lessons. I think having a lecturer on screen brings the viewer out of the software and makes it easier to concentrate on the bigger picture!
Did anyone notice that the holes in staskoNL's Swiss cheese look like crescent moons? Maybe someone could try to use that concept as a transition between scenes. Crescent "cheese" moons could change into the real moon.
I've added a video to the favorites section below as an example of what I'm talking about. In the "Spirit" clip check out how the horse's mane changes into prairie grass.
I have solvede the problem by export the file as Targa files and putt them togheter with a programm called VideoMach!
But still thanks for your help!
But i was asking if there were coming new tutorials? because i am now trying too create an skeleton, it is quite difficult and i mis some basic points to do it right.
Nice work, staskoNL. And I am very glad that you used your own original music. I have required my students' submissions to be 100% original (including the soundtrack) and perhaps you will prove to be an inspiration to them. Their work should start to appear here in a week or two.
I have folowed every tutorial and know i want to Batch render my animation! But i dont have a quicktime possibility so i tried the AVI batch rendering, but when i do that the programm renders an zero mb file called AVI.TMP into the default map, what is going wrong? the render just does not work for me,, can somebody help me? thanks already!
Hi Robert! Attached is "Cheesehenge", my first attempt at Swiss Cheese Stonehenge! Great lectures - hope they continue! Looking forward to seeing other people's video responses too!
I have posted a variety of videos on the channel page in the favorites section. You will find vids on industrial design, molecular structure, Stonehenge and even a couple on Swiss cheese making. Use them to begin your background research for the exercises.
For those of you who have been sending questions and comments to me directly...please post your comments and questions onto the appropriate videos. That way everyone can learn from your experiences. If you have made an important discovery post that as well.
The most important part of this project is that you can all share what you have learned and help each other if you can. This can be a difficult programme to learn, especially at first. But I can assure you that once you grasp the basics it gets much, much easier. Put in the time and effort, learn the basics and there will be no stopping you.
Thanks for these tutorials!

Hey thanks for the tutorials they were really great.. i've got one question tho- has anyone anyidea how to render out a movie with a transparent background (in photoshop terms) so i can fit it into a film. I've tried rendering with the alpha channel but i still get a black background?? any thoughts?
bennybenbenben 4 years ago
Fill the background of your animation with either bright green or solid blue ( a surrounding sphere works the best). Make sure that the colour you choose is not used anywhere else in your animation clip. Import the clip into video editing software such as Final Cut Pro or Premiere and use the Chroma Key effects to make the background disappear. Good Luck.

Hi.thank you it is really great idea,I have one question how can I make to different paths with different timing for example the moon moving around the Earth and the Earth moving around the sun.
Best regards

The magic word is "keyframing". Good luck.

I am having the exact same problem. Has anyone figured this out?
Thanks for the great teaching so far.

Joshal99 needs some help...who out there knows the answer to his question?

Hi, just like to say great tutorial and I have followed them all the way through, I am stuck at the end with the rendering, when I try to export the animation I don't have the option to export as .mov ( i do have quicktime on my computer though)so I exported it as .avi but when I go to view my animation the file 0kb. I dont no what to do, can you help?

StaskoNL had a similar problem. Perhaps he knows the answer.

update
Found problem, i had some sort of compression going on so changed it back to full frames and now files can be played
:)
naptic 4 years ago
Hi naptic. I think you'll find that you need to look at your rendering settings. At moment it sounds as if you're rendering out your animation as a sequence of Maya IFF images. Part Six - Section 1 of the tutorials covers rendering, so maybe that could help you.

Cheers 3d
i did have it as a avi just the compression on some setting.
i did make a ren of the my house but the vid came out as if it was on the screen and not a render one, not sure what i did.
thanks again

HullUniLecturer 4 years ago
Remember everyone... if you choose to use a soundtrack it does not necessarily have to be "music".

Hi Robert! Attached is "Cheesehenge", my first attempt at Swiss Cheese Stonehenge! Great lectures - hope they continue! Looking forward to seeing other people's video responses too!

Well done calhoun2006... you have submitted the first official video response, and it's a fine one at that

Wow, I'll subscribe, ur really fun to learn from, check out my vids, I hope u'll post more advanced things in the future.
Garfler 4 years ago
I have posted a variety of videos on the channel page in the favorites section. You will find vids on industrial design, molecular structure, Stonehenge and even a couple on Swiss cheese making. Use them to begin your background research for the exercises.
HullUniLecturer 4 years ago
For those of you who have been sending questions and comments to me directly...please post your comments and questions onto the appropriate videos. That way everyone can learn from your experiences. If you have made an important discovery post that as well.
HullUniLecturer 4 years ago
The most important part of this project is that you can all share what you have learned and help each other if you can. This can be a difficult programme to learn, especially at first. But I can assure you that once you grasp the basics it gets much, much easier. Put in the time and effort, learn the basics and there will be no stopping you.

Expect a video response from me :P
(The 4th exercise will probably be a separate response that I'll make a while after the others.)
