Firstly, thank you far all of your wonderful Ubuntu videos. I'm enjoying working through them. This Gnome shell however...I have supposedly changed following your instructions and not aware of any problems. Unfortunately I cant see any difference between "Ubuntu" and "Gnome shell". None whatsoever. Rebooted expecting change but nothing? What am I missing?
@quidsup Thanks for the explanation. I looked up a good article that went through all the popular desktops, and I decided I liked the simplicity and speed of XFCE compared to gnome 3/shell/classic, so I'm testing Xubuntu right now, and so far I'm really liking it. =]
hey, I have a problem with the gnome desktop in 11.10. I installed the gnome shell, but when I log in, the whole desktop is white and distorted, but the funny thing is, as soon as I activate the windows on the corners it returns to normal and all the effects are good but back to the normal desktop again everything is white, like some sort of video card defect. I´m new to LINUX/UBUNTU, should I reinstall the OS? My system is a intel P4 2,6 GHz with a nvidia MX440, 512MB RAM. It runs unity well
@quidsup thx for the quick reply. Do you think upgrading the RAM to 1gig will fix it ? And how easy is a dualboot installation (with win 7) of ubuntu to remove? I may try a full installation on my notebook with i5 core 2,4 ghz and 4 gigs of RAM
@daokine 1Gb would make a huge difference and is quite a cheap upgrade to do now days.
No idea what its like to remove Linux as I went the other way and removed Windows. I think its a lot easier with Windows 7 compared to XP because you need to use the System Recovery tools to reinstall the Windows Boot loader and then you can resize the harddrive in Windows 7 to wipe out the Linux partition.
@daokine The Ubuntu Developers have made a program called "Wubi" that will Dual Boot Ubuntu for you, and you can uninstall it from the Windows 7 Control Panel, this is a bit late though, just thought I'd let you know.
New linux user over here - Is there any way to change the defualt shell and run 1 application like a .swf? In windows you can change the shell in the registry to whatever you need. Is there and equivalent in Ubuntu? Cheers.
... Imagine you get up on a Monday morning, you might be a bit late for wrk and you jump in your car only to find that there is no steering wheel, oh and the pedals are gone in fact there is no dash either, you can't drive! Now a nice engineer from the Co that makes your car says 'we changed it! its better!!, you'll see when you learn how to drive it you will love it!' but, you don't want to learn how to drive a better car, now you're just really late for work. My 2cents, Cheers.
@Coyotehello Fair point but the layout of cars did change in the early years and its almost the same with computers. They've only been really mass marketed for the last 10 years, and its only what 30 years when a PC you could buy for home came out.
My thinking is whats so great about a layout that was made in 1995? Sure we were all used to it.
@quidsup, I posted on another vid of yours and you referred me to this vid, I wanted to thx you. I read my earlier post and realized I might have come a bit harsh so even more thankful you actually replied to me. I did not mean to be harsh but the frustration was up there!
Does Gnome 3 require something.. like drivers on (I have nvidia).. since and does it effect youtube becouse when I have drivers on (now im using Xubuntu) Youtube lag like hell.
I got the blue flashes. I used Gnome's built in recorder in the end: Shift+Ctrl+Alt+r. Press same key combination again to stop recording. Captures in .webm
Agreed I've been using GNOME 3 with Arch for some time now and the only thing that annoys is the large window title area which could easily have that depth cut in half.
"Good News!" and I immediately thought of Professor Farnsworth from Futurama. I kind of think that was intentional :D Thanks for the video! It most certainly made me want to try 11.10 when it drops in a few weeks!
@quidsup Well yeah Debian runs much faster than Ubuntu even though Ubuntu is based on Debian. The Software Centre from Ubuntu has been ported to Debian and is now in Debian's repos so don't be surprised if Unity gets ported to Debian some time in the future :) Unity is still VERY new and Debian likes to use very stable software even if it means being outdated. BUT sometime in the future when Unity is nice and stable Unity could enter Debian's repos. GNOME 3 is in Debian's experimental repos.
@blackoutworm lol I like that drinkcasts. Uh I can't hear a womans voice? Hmm unless it was something from outside, it was pretty hot yesterday and I left the window open while recording this. Cheers
Short but sweet drinking and screencasting can be fun. Would love to seen a little more about the shell but I still like Unity and now quite like it. Roll on 11.10 8 days to go i think. Thumbs up dude
if i install gnome shell it will allow me to run pascal? i saw that pascal doesn't work on ubuntu 11.10 (my version) and other people said that
devv32wtf49 6 days ago
@devv32wtf49 Chaging desktop isn't going to make a difference.
I had a quick look atoud and found theres no builds for 11.10. You could try dowloading a .deb installer for it and seeing if that works

Hi, I'm a Linux noob. But what is the difference between installing gnome or gnome shell in Ubuntu 11.10?
chicaboo76 3 months ago
@chicaboo76 Gnome Shell was the development name for what is now Gnome 3.

@quidsup Gnome 3 comes in default with Gnome Shell, that is a layer like Unity. Gnome 3 runs under both Gnome Shell and Unity.

@daokine Im surprised it works at all with 512Mb RAM, that could well be the cause of the blank desktop.
You might want to consider something lighter like Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Or if you want something a fancier theres Bodhi Linux.
I've reviewed all three of those Distros

@javier29m90 Install dconf-tools
Open dconf-editor and navigate to: apps > notify-osd
Maybe changing settings there will sort it out?

@inamonianim It can be pronounced either way, but the G in Gnome stands for GNU. Theres not a silent G in GNU

@Ravenous1986 Youtube being slow would be more down to the CPU rather than Graphics. Need at least a dual core to be able to watch HD Youtube vids.
