the krystal called to him, because Jor-el promised him he would never be alone, after the death of his earth father Kal-el felt great sense of not just loss but feeling of being very alone, and kryptonian technology is based on subconscious feeling and thought from the heart, it not only pics up on this but its able to enhance its property, to ensure the kryptonian of what ever house then obtains that which he needs to overcome what ever obsticle in his way...in this case his fathers death

@qantas168 Because green is often a color associated with "alien", in fiction, and very often with Krypton itself, in DC Comics literature/backstory. The crystal is not kryptonite, but it is a symbol of Krypton.

This has an almost Lovecraftian feel, at 0:37 and just after. "What's out there, in the barn?" Granted, we know in retrospect that it is great good, not nihilistic, uncaring monstrosity...but that whole atmosphere it creates? Astoundingly spooky, for a Superman film.

the powers were apart of him they always have been... no need for the crystal.
