The Stones recorded this track into an old mono cassette recorder to get a distinctive sound on this. Performed in a Blues style, this song is loaded with sexual metaphors. Mick Jagger plays the harmonica on this track. The Beggars Banquet album cover was designed to look like an invitation, with the letters RSVP at the bottom. The Stones wanted to use a photo of a graffiti-covered bathroom (like above), but Decca Records wouldn't allow it. The stalemate held up the album's release.
I like this album, but find it's funny that "real Stones fans" say this is their favorite and that hit seeker won't know of these "deeper cuts." Meaning? Real fans rule. lol
May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene, 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man . The author is a big fan of this track.
i enjoyed this album in two stages; one in my early teens with 'sympathy' and 'street fighting man' then the remainder of the album in my thirties - didn't know what i was missing in my teens -- love this song!
Beggars Banquet: The Stones' first truly great album! Despite the wonderful albums that came from 1970-1974, this is what The Stones are really about. Amazing stuff!
Best song from the album. Just a simple sexy sultry blues song. I love it. It's genius lies with in its simplicity. That crunch distorted guitar bit is so mesmerizing. So much power in that one block being repeated. WOW!!! Keith really knows how to get you going with just one or two simple notes repeated. Thats the genius of a great guitarist, to be able to create art and make it as simple yet as powerful as you can. This def is powerful!!!! DEY!!!!
@mergellina80 - This song actually came out two years BEFORE "Roadhouse Blues." "Beggar's Banquet," by the Rolling Stones, came out in 1968; and, "Morrison Hotel," by the Doors, came out in 1970.
@sguessone - Don't ALWAYS put 100% stock in "Wikipedia," as those articles can be written by pretty-much anyone and not necessarily altogether correct. Go to a more reliable site when you need to know something for SURE! :)
The BLues. THe Stones knew how to take the blues and mold them into something of a whole new entity. The songs come alive when They perform them. It's something very supernatural about it.
@MultiRandom32 - This song, and, the rest of this album, are a testament that the rock-n-roll of the 1960s is the best ever!! If you haven't, you must see the "Rolling Stones' Rock & Roll Circus!" It came out just when this album, "Beggar's Banquet," came out! It rocks!! :)
@classiclistener01 Hate to nitpick ,although the R & R Circus was filmed December '68. It came to see the light of day only in '98. The Stones found their performance (unnessecarely so)below par,and decided to shelve it.30 years later it was deemed good enough for a video and CD release.
@PAULLONDEN - Yes. The Rolling Stones, especially Mick Jagger, thought that they were upstaged by the Who on their own show, and, this led to the shelving of Rock & Roll Circus. The Who even offered to buy and distribute the film under the name "The Who's Rock & Roll Circus," but, this was not allowed. Even though Peter Townshend claims in his interview that the Stones were exhausted, their performance is GREAT - in my opinion; and, it's Brian Jones' last live performance with the Stones.
@namey420 - Hey, fellow Rolling Stones' friend and fan! :) "Rock and Roll Circus WAS once rare - now, it's available to all! Check it out - IT'S SOOO GREAT! A wonderful performance by EVERYONE, especially, the Stones!! Brian Jones, unlike much of the rest, IS 'RIGHT ON KEY' and 'NEVER MISSES A NOTE!' "No Expectations" is WONDERFUL!!" This song, "Parachute Woman," is also great!
Although I love the Who, the Stones OWN this show!! :)
Oh my - this ends too soon for me.
