@TOOLMAN09100 Sounds like you had a pretty good year ! I don't know where you're at, but here in Michigan, it was our best year in a long time. I still have 2 gallon jars of them dried. Morels are only about 4 months away, so I better get eating some of them !
@TOOLMAN09100 I've never tried freezing them, but I hear that's a good way too. About the only mushrooms I freeze are Hen of the Woods, Chanterelles and a few other polypores that don't dry well, cause they turn leathery. Good luck on this coming season and get some videos posted here !
@banchie28 I do !! Got over 2,000 this year. I dehydrate them for use all year long. Sauted Morels & diced bacon tastes pretty good with that Wild Thanksgiving Turkey !!
Do the blacks taste different than the whites? The false morel, do you identify those only by cutting in half to inspect for cottony substance in stem, what about the cap?
@sandworm3 The difference between the taste is your palate, to me fresh new Black morels taste way better. However White Morels have more meat to them, and usually grow bigger.[The only thing that's going to help you with ID. with false morels ( Verpa bohemica ) is to slow down and take a close look at them. The quickest way to Id. a Verpa ( false morel ) is to twist the cap. If it comes off like a lampshade on a lamp, and the stem stays there, it's a false morel.
@sandworm3 We went on a hunt this past Saturday and Monday. Found 17 total whites. It was fun but came with the price of blood. Gnats and ticks! We live in SW Minnesota, seems like you have to work your tail off to find them or the conditions may have been too cold or wet. We are stuck in the 50-70 degree range with a cold spring and wet conditions. Your thoughts?
@sandworm3 Sounds like the same weather we have here. It's been one of the best seasons in a long time. For the Whites here in Michigan, I look for dead & dying Elm and White Ash. Yesterday was the first time I had a problem with skeeters. They were really bad. I ended up with around 300 Whites and Half free morels in 4 hrs. Not as good as I usually do, but there's been a lot of hunters there though.
@grifola must be a prevailing species over there. We work our tails off to find them and have not found any big swells of them. I was at the co-op in Minneapolis over the weekend and I saw fresh morels in the produce department. $64.99 per pound! Yep that is why we forage in the wild.
I recognized that land..Thanks! Now I know where to go......Those delectable edibles will be in MY onion sack next year com padre...Thanks for the tip!
Watched several of your videos and enjoyed them all. I'll have to try the stuffed morel recipe for sure. Used to just batter and fry 'em, then took a run on cream of morel soup (good way to appreciate their unique flavor, and to extend a small find). Season's on here--happy hunting!
Do it one time and you'll understand !!! Once you get the disease you will spend your entire savings and the kids college fund in search of them !!!! You won't give up till you find the Mother Load ( which will never happen because you know there is always a bigger find out there somewhere ) Yes my friend, it is like a drug. Once you get this addiction, your life will never be the same !! Nothing else will matter. Oh my God, I've got to let you go. Got'ta go see if anything is popping up yet
Ya Buddy !!! Going out today . I've only got 23 dried ones from last year so it's time to put some away for the cold winter .Thanks for watching . See Ya In The Woods !!!
I'm in MI also and I really want to start looking this spring but need to research a bit on finding them as I've never had much sucess. My boys are growing up and it'd be a great spring activity. Great video!
Should be about the same as here in Mich. From mid April through May. All depending on the weather & rain.On colder seasons they sometimes go into June.
I hear you, great eating too!! Check out the web sight (morels. com) everybody talks back & forth about when, where, and why about morels. Keeps you well informed about your area and all around us.
That would be a really good way to cook them.I'll have to try it if I get lucky and find a bunch of them this Spring.I live in Oklahoma,I have only found one in my entire life here so I know their around.I just dont know anything about finding them. This video gave me some ideas of where to look though.
Yes they are, especially stuffed with crab and deep fried! I don't know where you live but they grow in every state. It's just a matter of finding out when. Thanks for watching.
Yes, I do coat them with "Drakes Fish Batter" I sometimes run them under water, then roll them in the dry Drakes, or you can make a batter to dip them in. Both are great, but the latter makes them crunchy'er. Fry them in oil about 325 to 350 deg. till golden brown. If you're lucky enough to find M. Crassipes, one or two of them is a meal in itself. Thanks for watching! Jack
Sorry about taking so long to reply! Yes, you can dry them. That's the way I found is the best.I have an Excalibur Dehydrator, and it works great with all mushrooms.
I had a old apple tree in my yard , every year I could always count on getting a few there , If I got up in the moring and they were up I called into work and went to all my spots.( Traverse city area )
Wow! Those are some real beauties! I`ll be seeing those in my sleep tonight. We`re in the transition from blacks to whites right now here in S.W. Indiana.
Wow that is amazing, hope you have more good luck on that. I have found esculenta only once and you are right on how they grow where you least expect them, I found them growing out of a brick wall!
Stuffed White Morels. 8 to 10 Large White Morels ( Stems cut off at the bottom ) 3 or 4 Wild Leeks Chopped ( greens & bulbs ) 2 slices white bread ( Toasted or Dried ) 1 cup shredded crab meat. Shredded cheese of your choice ( Monteray Jack Blends Well )
Chop stems, leek greens & bulbs. Crush bread to crumbs and mix all together with shredded cheese. Stuff mushroom caps with mixture. Run stuffed mushrooms under water and roll in Drakes Fish Mix Deep fry in oil until golden brown!
Hey Jack, I would like to say congrads on putting together a nice video of morels, you did a fine job!. Were just getting going up here in S.E. MN. Been finding them pretty steady here for the last week we could use some rain though as the woods are starting to get dry. I invite you to check out some of my Videos showing a few of the Morels we find here in Minnesota. Take Care, Mark Pearce

Old apple orchards, ash trees, dead & dying elm, and mixed hardwood. Predictability is not characteristic of the morel.
