you guys are morons. michael crawford and sarah brightman only sang in theater, they never created a movie. this movie was created in 2004. the phantom in the movie is played by gerard butler and christine is played by emma rossum.

My understanding is that originally around 1990 or so, ALW had been planning that there WOULD be a POTO musical movie in the works WITH Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman. But "complications" arose (I think the marriage between Webber and Brightman hit a rocky point) and it was never done. Michael Crawford always said, even around the time this movie was made, that he'd have been glad to voice the Phantom - as he SHOULD HAVE! At least we now have MC's great voice if not his physical role.

I have to say the singing voiced are really good, but I do believe the voices of butler and rossum have a sort of connection. Like Butlers has a rough edge to it and makes it seem that the phantom is obsessed but also a genuis. Rossum has that professional sound to it for she is singing broadway (her character is).

I can understand why they didn't want Brightman and Crawford in the movie when it was shot. It was because they were too old for the roles. Brightman was in her early 40's and Crawford was in his 60's, but they could of at least dubbed the voices. They did it for Carlotta, they can do it for Erik and Christine. Yeah, then we wouldn't have to deal with the quality of Emmy and Gerry's voices.

@glamgirlsg Actually in the book Erik would have been about the same age as MC was at the time of taping. Also MC did NOT look his age at that time at all. He was, is and always will be the Phantom... He doesn't need costume and makeup to slip into the character and BE Erik.

i felt kinda stupid when i first watched this (not insulting the maker). the voice for the phantom doesn't fit the...... facial structure i want to say. It's like when you see a really big guy and he has a really squeaky voice. then i saw that it was dubbed and i was like, "Oooohhhh! Okay! i get it."

The only thing that is great about this is the original lyrics (which technically this is not the original lyrics either) though Michael Crawfords voice dosent fit the role as phantom that much, i admit he did a great job. But the phantom is suppose to have a beautiful voice, his voice dosent really fit.

I agree if they were not going to use Michael they needed someone who sounded more like him. Gerard Butler just could not pull it off. I will say think Michael was the best! The lady playing Christine has a great voice!
