  • ok so i went over the lyrics, i like the song but i dont quite understand it. n why does ppl keep saying it has sumthing to do with john lennon's death? anyone? thnx

  • @simio312 I believe that the killer didn't really explained his actions, instead he said to read the book "catcher in the rye"

  • R.I.P John Lennon

  • not the first time I heard Axl Rose loved Catcher In The Rye. "Appetite" has at least 1 obscure ref. I thought there was a ref or conc'tn to "Sweet Child"

  • Kids! Axl himself said this is about the book, but also said this part

"And then the voices went away from me

Somehow you set the wheels in motion

    That haunt our memories

    You were the instrument

    You were the one

    How a body

    Took the body

You gave that boy a gun" That's the only part in the whole song that has to do with John's death.

  • Goddam sonuvabitch Guns and Roses are a bunch of goddam phonies, but this song just kills me. I am crazy, I swear to god!

  • these goddam sonuvabitches that hit the dislike button, they always end up making you blue as hell.

  • This is the phoniest thing I've ever heard in my life.

  • this song is a tribute to John Lennon.

  • @Kounah ha nah man your wrong. Have you read the book?

  • @cremer95 I have read the book, actually. And I've also gotten information from different sources that tells me this song is an homage to Lennon's death.

  • @Kounah Bro but its not its about the book plain and simple it has nothing to do with John Lennon RIP

  • @cremer95 You're clearly very stupid. The man who killed Lennon (Mark Chapman) was obsessed with this book and carried it with him the day Lennon was murdered. Is is a fucking tribute to him, now please stfu and let me enjoy this song.

  • @Kounah I am very aware of this. You have no reason to call me stupid because you are wrong this song was written about the book. It has nothing to do with john lennon. Your fucking nuts.

  • fuck, I love this song!

  • Everyone that asks if this song is about the book is so fuckin stupid. Its completely undeniably about the book if you knew anything about the book you would agree and if you didn't then what the fuck does it mean to you to know if it's about the book or not

  • shits godly..

  • Amazing song! YEA GNR!

  • 64 people disliked this video... One person got top comment for lack of creativity.

  • Sounds Ozzy in good days.

  • Dude...Axl is getting soft...He has lost his edge. It took him 10 years to come up with this? Its horrible. Until the Real GnR get back together, we won't know what they are capable of.

  • This -very good- song really makes think about November Rain on several points.

  • The best version of this song that I found was on mp3ify.com and you can download the mp3 or import it into itunes.

  • Does it have something to do with The catcher in the rye,the book?Sorry for asking that but I read it a long time ago and I don't see the bind. Thanks

  • @Aalexandra4ever The first part of the song is to do with the book and loss of innocence, and what is sometimes referred to as 'Holden Caulfield syndrome'. The lyrics are structured with how Holden could possibly think. Axl admits that for him it was just blowing off steam, but acknowledges that some people may actually think this way. The bridge before the solo is an artistic interpretation of a institutionalized mind. And the final part is about the murder of John Lennon. Anyway, amazing song

  • the original guns today wouldn't be the original guns today either they'd be just like the stones....tired

  • Really getting into the Chinese Democracy album, no its not the original guns but its pretty damn good.

  • its AXL N' ROSES

  • i dont wanna sound stupid even though i do right now but can someone please explane me the connection between catcher in the rye, john lennon and this song,

i mean i know about his assassionation and stuff but i wanna know how it really is

    id really apreciate

    love from arizona

  • @justRomyM472 its because the guy who shoot john lennon read the book catcher in the rye a lot and was carrying it at the moment of the murder. you can watch a movie with jared letto in this movie they talk about the mrderer and stuff. But you know its only that he likes the book and the personality of the protagonist of the book.

  • This song was for john lennon right?

  • This song has nothing to do with the book. I read the lyrics.

  • @lukeboy551 Green Day? Off Kerplunk my fav Green Day album next to Warning and Nimrod.

  • @CtrlRm FUCK GREEN DAY!

  • Holden <3

  • axl may be an ass in real life, i've seen it, but its music is still sick enough to make me not care about how he is

  • This version is god awful. Go look up the original DEMO version. That's a classic song. This one is overdone.... horrible

  • 58 people are phonies and prostitutes!

  • Axl: ...I got a call from the director of Imagine wanting a bunch of money to make a documentary, had a guy sending me strange packages about Lennon and serial killers etc and the web started calling me Salinger w/no one knowing what I was writing. I figured I was on the right track at least for a song.

  • Axl: ... an indictment of the author for writing what i feel is utter garbage and I agree whole heartedly that it should be discontinued as required reading in schools. That's my take, I could be completely wrong, I do realize that the song and title could have the next poor soul reading the book and feeling inspired to make an unfortunate statement. So there's the catch I guess. When I came up with the focus, ...

  • Axl: ... myself to go what may be there or somewhat close during the verses. I'd think for most those lines are enjoyed as just venting, blowing off steam, humor or some type of entertainment where it may be how others seriously live in their minds. The bridge b4 the solo is an artistic interpretation of a institutionalized mind. The outro is a tribute to Lennon and...

  • Axl Rose about the song: question-> "How much does the book 'Catcher in the Rye' inform the song, or is is soley referring to Chapman"?

Axl: For me the song is inspired by what's referred to sometimes as Holden Caulfield syndrome. I feel there's a possibility that how the writing is structured with the thinking of the main character could somehow reprogram for lack of a better word some who may be a bit more vulnerable, with a skewed way of thinking and tried to allow...

  • I don't like too much the new Guns but this is a beuaty song.

  • I am not a fan of the new GNR, but this is a very good song and I am using it for my Catcher in the Rye music project!

  • I don't really believe this song catches the essence of the book. Question is if that is what it tried to do.

  • BUT WHERE DO THE GODDAMN DUCKS GO IN THE WINTER THEN?!

  • Really good song, Really good album.

  • justin bieber: god sent me here to make good music

Guns & Roses: no i didnt...

  • @waauuuup AC/DC: bitch please!

  • @waauuuup

  • @waauuuup that copy paste doesn't work for bands.

  • @waauuuup you mean "no 'we' didn't."

    Such an old joke, too.

  • reminds me of elton John for some reason I think axl is really developing into a great songwriter. Maybe this is one of those in the balance albums were hes going into something great in the future

  • Cause what used to be's

    Not there for me

    And ought to for someone

    That belongs...

    Insane...

    Like I do

    Oh, no

    Not at all

  • That kinda stuff always depressed me, I mean when you have a great band and all. Then you take a few show-offy people and it sounds like crap. Boy, do I hate that. It just depresses the hell out of me even to think about it.

    Anyway...

  • @tbdmz when you people are going to learn that if you dont like a song doesnt mean its crap? RollingStone gave this album 4 stars, the same score of UYI1, UYI2 and Lies. im not saying that you need to like it, but at least resapect axl's work.

  • @Luxmaxnike I actually wasnt saying it was crap. Just saying that there is a book out there called Cather in the Rye and speaking like the main character Holden Claufield who is always depressed and stuff. Honestly I think its alright... not better than their old stuff though.

  • @tbdmz lolden Caulfield?

  • @NekoNickKun or perhaps his cousin Trolin' Caulfield

  • This killed me. It really did.

  • I HATED THIS FUCKING BOOK. HOLDEN IS A WHINEY BITCH

  • This GnR is not going to sound the same as they did for 2 very important reasons:

    1) Music in general has changed in so many ways since they were last on top of the charts.

    2) GnR allways would change things to fit their moods and tones at the time. I remember reading an interview with Slash & Axl when "Lies" was released. They both said that they weren't singing about starving in the streets anymore (as in Appetite) cause they weren't. This is the new GnR like it or not.

  • I like the original demo WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better. This version sounds like someone sat in the recording studio not happy with the masterpiece that once was. Instead we get this distored sounding crappola.... sorry but thumbs down on this version.

  • Why keep the GNR name? It's like Ringo forming the Beatles again. Oasis without either Liam or Noel, Queen without Freddie and Brian. I like this album but Axl is just shooting himself in the foot by keeping the name.

  • @casperld i dont hear oasis, but based on the queen or the beatles comparisons i assume that you're saying that axl is one of the less important member of the old band. i dont think its fair

  • actually I think the song is really good, but also I think that this soing dowsn't fit the book or the personality of Holden :I

  • @BLEACHichiruki It does somewhat , but I don't think so either. I think he's talking about John Lennon and Mark Chapman more than the character of Caulfield. Or could be all three.

    "That haunt our memories

    You were the instrument

    You were the one

    How a body

    Took the body

You gave that boy a gun"

  • who wrote holden caulfield?

  • @cookie30341 there's also a Green Day song about that book and it's also awesome

  • You cant say that this album is bad, just listen to it a few times. I hated it at first but now its my favourite album. Axls voice is so emotional

  • @Zellzify chinese democracy is my favorite album(from mid 90's-2008) you see im the biggest gnr head you'll ever meet. i just got the appetite for destruction tattoo on my back. the cross is 10 or 11" long. and of course you gotta get the ribbons:) but you can only guess how much i like Appetite, Lies, and use your illusion'S. But i liked your comment and how "Axls voice is so emotional". Thats b/c its true, to many people hate chinese democracy b/c they think axl is the only dick in oldGNR

  • @10cavsfan Amen. Im gotta get an appetite tattoo alswell ;)

  • The guy from the book hated everything. :l

  • Brasil no coraçao

  • I just finished reading the book.. didnt know there was a song about it!

  • Say wathever you want new Guns n Roses/Axl haters. I LOVE this song and the cd is pretty good.

  • @Snakenirvanero Here's the deal. The reason people talk mad shit about new GnR... is because it's not GnR. I love this album, but it's an Axl Rose album. It is in no way a Guns n' Roses album. Axl should be hogtied and beaten about the head and shoulders for trying to skate off the success of the real band. I love the album as an Axl album, but GnR? No fuckin' way, dude.

  • @Snakenirvanero it's fucking awesome bro, im a city boy surrounded by nothing but lil waynes and drake wannabes in this city. i keep it different, from the hood and i listen to good ol' rockin' roll.

  • @Snakenirvanero it's not about hating the new guns and axl, its about the new guns being nothing like the old (them being better or worse or what ever isn't the point) Axl should stop pretending that guns still exist. guns n roses was him and slash n izzy, duff and steve (matt count's to iff you ask me). guns is past and to continue with their name just doesnt make sence. axl should have given his new band another name cause it just isn't guns any more .

  • @Martinos1991 You know what? I think the same...but I listen to the music, that's the real important thing to me when I search for "Guns N Roses Chinese Democracy". People are calling this: "a piece of shit" and they excuse themselves saying "It is NOT Guns N Roses" (F**K OFF!) thats why I said what I said...

  • @Martinos1991 Axl Rose, being one of the only actual founding members of the original Guns n' Roses left in the band when they broke up (the only other being Izzy Stradlin), he has every right in my opinion to stick with the name Guns n' Roses. Nobody bitched when they kept that name after Tracii Guns, half of it's namesake, departed for Slash.

Do you really feel that strongly about what combination of letters a band is known by? The music is what matters.

  • @Nysyarc i don't think you realised it but you made my point. what you think you are going to hear when you see Guns N Roses Tonight! on a billboard is guns n roses. Chinese democracy sounds nothing like guns n roses. there for in my opinion i think he should stop calling his band Guns n roses. i know that he has every right to. and guns n roses made its fame long after tracii left. so he really hasn't got anything to so with it.

  • @Martinos1991 It does sound like Guns n' Roses, because their name is still Guns n' Roses. It may not sound like Appetite for Destruction or Use Your Illusion, but did those albums really sound so similar to one another anyways? So you hate on Chinese Democracy just because it's different too? G n' R has changed their sound many times even without changing band members.

You can't say it doesn't sound like G n' R when Chinese Democracy is exactly what Axl Rose wanted G n' R to sound like.

  • @Nysyarc well, I disagree with just about everything you just said. only thing I agree with is that it sounds exactly like what Axl wanted. but the guns were much more that just Axl. I realise that you won't see things my way no matter what i say. so i wish to you a happy life and so long ^^

  • @Martinos1991 I understand your point of view quite well, all I'm saying is just try to be more open-minded about these kinds of things. There are too many people in the world who make judgements early based on insignificant details and end up with a skewed perception of the big picture as a result.

  • @Nysyarc well, I'm glad you understand my point. but to me it just isn't that insignificant. those 5 guys really had something together they made what i find to be the best music from the 80ties and early 90ties. and somehow it just gets to me that Axl still has the balls to pretend that he and only he is Guns N' roses. he's a great singer and all and a inspiration to my singing. he's just an utter and complete cunt.

  • I saw GNR live btches !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Fenomenoe9 me toooo

  • @Fenomenoe9 Me too, BEST night of my life, I was like a metre away from Axl

  • I prefer the Demo: Brian May is better than Bumblefoot

  • i just finished catcher in the rye hour ago, i cried...like a basterd.

  • Guns is not Guns without Slash.

  • @RemoteMemory You are worng about that. Slash is doing very well without axl and the same with axl. From how great this album is he didnt need slash! I think he shows everybody that if you listen.

  • @kickflif300

Whether the album is great or not, it is not Guns without Slash.

When Ozzy was booted from Sabbath, he released a killer album... much better than anything Sabbath released with Dio. That said, it was not Sabbath.

Sabbath was never Sabbath without Ozzy, and it also would not have been Sabbath if it were just Ozzy with no Iomi.

I feel the same way about Axl and guns

  • R.I.P. J. D. Salinger

  • This vocals were recorded around 2002. After 2006, Axl's voice got a lot better.

He should have re-recorded before releasing the album because he sounds like an old grandma in some songs...

  • @fecoboco did u want it to take 3 more years??? jk. i love ChiDem

  • bunch of FUCKIN RETARDED FUCKS!!!! tomorrow is gone. AC/DC !NOT ORIGINAL, METALLICA, NOT ORIGINAL. SHUT THE FUCK UP AND... O' YEAH.... LISTEN!!! STUPID FUCK DICK HEADS NEED TO GET OVER IT. MUSIC IS WHAT IT IS JUST QUIT TYPING AND ENJOY , OR GET THE FUCK OUT!!!~!!!!!

  • is there any point arguing? you either like it or you don't. if you don't well you stick to your old stuff :) problem solved.

  • im doing a research paper on this book :D plus i <3 GNR :D

  • why did axl drop Brian mays guitar playing from this song, it sounds worse. Brian made the song but axl was jealous and dropped him.

  • You took our innocence

    Beyond our stares

    Sometimes the only thing

    We counted on

When no one else was there

Best line of the song. So emotional.

  • Guns N Roses are a joke now, the new album and band itself isn't remotely as good as it once was with slash and co.

  • i like this song

  • I DO love ! thanks guns n' roses I still love you

  • i dont wanna sound like one of these slash fans who cant let go of the past cause i love this album . but guns n roses changed rok forever and i think they would still be huge had they stayed together ...

  • I love this!!! yes Axl is an ego-maniacal asshole, and no this will never be able to compare to vintage GNR, but this song just has that SOMETHING, you know? I can't really explain but it's just one of those songs, it's bigger than life and it tells a story and it's just epic and it fucking RULES

  • new style, and they did it well!

  • the new songs from GNR just doesnt sound like Guns N' Roses. When you think of GNR you think of the hardcore bluesy rock n roll. just doenst have the same feeling that they once gave people. at least to me they dont

  • @doggie5555 You´ve got a point there... GNR means pure and raw hard rock, but Axl never wanted that for Chinese Democracy, it is an awesome album if you just forget for a second about what GNR really means and listen Chinese Democracy as what it really is: Axl Rose and a bunch of virtuosos musicians playing great overproduced songs using the name of a deceased band. Forget about the name for a second and enjoy the album, believe me it works

  • @Kurki the only issue with that is the name belongs to one of the former greatest bands in the world. Unfortunately, many people nbought this album just because it had the GnR label and not because they wanted to see what it sounded like on its own. I agree with you, as just a rock album, it's not bad in the least. But as a Guns n Roses album, it just doesnt stand up.

  • @BillBaileyFan2662 I agree... I´d rather it be called Axl Rose´s Chinese Democracy, because it really doesn´t have anything to do with GNR. It´s an awesome record, the best I´ve heard in years, but you´re right about the band´s name

  • @BillBaileyFan2662

You talk garble and you smell like gerbils.

  • @MrLeagueOJustice

A.. Wow, nice response. What are you, 3?

    B. WTH did I say to piss you off? Every word I said was the truth. It's hardly GN'R anymore. And if you think otherwise, then you obviously don't know what GN'R really stood for in the beginning.

  • J.D Salinger.

  • @IWillSexU Catcher in the rye is my favorite book :D

  • @HugeMichaelMyersFan same here..

  • I'm not gonna lie, it took a while for this song to grow on me, but now that it has it's one of my favorite from Chinese Democracy. It just flows so well, and it has almost a sort of nostalgic feel to it, especially in the "Na na na na na na na na" parts.

The best part in my opinion is 2:00 - 2:25. It feels both foreboding and hopeful at the same time. It reminds me of November Rain, a lot.

  • Yesterday I finished reading the book and I think that you have to feel identified in something or its impossible to like it. And I'm sure there's something to do so. Who likes to answer the same question twice when you have already admited it once?

  • THE GUNS N ROSES I KNEW NEVER TRADED TECHNICALLY ADVANCED GUITAR SOLOS FOR SOLOS FILLED WITH RICH, PASSIONATE, SOUL.

  • @betthisonesfree Did you ever listen to This I Love, Better, or Sorry? All fantastic 'SOLOS FILLED WITH RICH, PASSIONATE, SOUL.'. :)

  • @Vorail lol. i will try them out. ;)

  • @betthisonesfree Alright, lemme know what you think.

  • Salinger wrote the book in my drummer friends barn. I jammed there a few times, it was great fun, really interesting place, definitely felt like the kind of place the book could have been written.

  • Ya know, I don't like Guns' older stuff much, but this is interesting. The decade+ work paid off greatly.

  • the catcher in the rye is single handedly the best book ever written in the history of mankind, thats what i think. It explains every single bad thing the world is doing, but only like less than 1/5 of the world understands that

  • @Elephant228 probablly one of the best

  • I JUST finished reading this book. It was TERRIFIC.

  • even a 1/5 of Gn´R is still better than most of todays stuff

  • such an amazing song I love the lyrics.. beautiful mature love song. if you've really shared something close close with someone and had it fall apart this is what this song feels like. hope & sorrow

  • @DistortedDingo totally agree the worst thing he did was call it guns n roses

  • @deathcube11 Yeah he should have realeased it as a solo album it would be more epic than slash's in some ways

  • @DistortedDingo that is exactly what i couldn't come up with the words to say, i listen to it over and over just reminissing, good mwmories, and dead ones :)

  • @69robert96 dude seriously compared 2all the old guns n roses music this is shit no mater how hard axl tries he wil never b as good wen he had slash

  • @Liamman95 you are sadly mistaken. His new stuff is amazing, it's just different from Guns N' Roses. Preferences aside, it is completely different from old Gn'R, and maybe it shouldn't be called Gn'R... but nonetheless it is still good.

  • @Dalittheuntouchable i can c ur point lyk it is good buhin my eyes its not better than the old GnR

  • how about if you dont like thw new gnr you pretend theyre completely gone and just respect what they did back in "the day"

  • I like that song.

  • not one great song on the album.

  • Sounds like bird shit! This is AWFUL!!!

    RIP G N R

  • nice son

  • this is not guns n roses

  • @davek1976 ur an idiot.

  • @davek1976 lol ok...then who is it?

  • @davek1976 ....lol just listen to axl singing..lol your dumb

  • @davek1976 yup,it's New guns n roses,NEW AMAZING!!!

love this song!shame on you ;)

  • @sonjavin

    Its AMAZING alright...AMAZINGLY TERRIBLE!!!!

    RIP GNR

  • @marshjvm mean u ?

    haha

  • the demo version that was leaked years ago is much better. the vocals are cleaner and have better effects, and brian may plays guitar instead of fucking bumblefoot. sheesh. good song, shitty recording. that guitar solo is horrible

  • This song has nothing to do with the book, at first I was like wow they know how to read, but no this song is just jock rock crap

  • This song is so ugly. Nice bike though.

  • wanted to listen to this song cause my dad gave me his old copy of catcher in the rye and i liked it but i cant without slash

  • This actually sounds somewhat like old gnr. Chinese Democracy(the title track) sounded more like alternative.

  • RIP JD Salinger

  • This is an interesting interpretation of the novel. At least that's what I assume it's from.

  • gnr isnt as loud as they were with slash.. and thats the main reason i liked them because they were one of the loudest wildest unpredictible bands... they lived now i guess we have to let them die... R.I.P to the orignal gnr :(.. i still love u axl!

  • street of dreams and catcher in the rye are the only songs that I like of chinese democracy I like much more the old guns n' roses!!!

  • one of my favorites from chinese democracy.they get a lot shit for this record but axl himself said they werent trying to make a party record, just trying to get back to making music

  • c'mon he is still a fantastic song writer, alot better than most nowadays anyway. Give it where it's due ppl todays music is garbage, this is a masterpiece in comparison

  • @steelcityaryan

i think buckethead wrote alot of this album.

    I THINK

so dont get in my ass. thats just what i heard

  • @crayZtaco7 sounds like Buckethead doesnt it? some atleast

  • @collin292 well ya becasue buckethead was probably their guitarist, seriously idk if u know but buckethead played with these guys for quite a while
