the great thing about his volley is he doesn't have to change from his forehand grip to his volley grip. same thing with slicing. All three of those are the same grip which is why I was always wondering what did i do wrong with my continental volley
@wind1357 Sorry, but i disagree. Federer does not use a continental forehand grip. He uses an eastern grip for his forehand, but in different situations he is capable of changing it slightly to fit the circumstance. For the slice backhand, yes he uses continental, but that is the correct grip to use. Everyone plays differently, however Federer's forehand is not a continental grip. (No disrespect intended, just thought that I could correct this)
nver, it'd be cool if you added smt about Federer's mental strength in the key points - think this years aussie open final against murray during breakpoints for and against, wimbledon's final against roddick in the last set when roddick was playing better than him, against del potro in the french last year when it seemed clear del potro would win... so many examples
feds volleys might not be as good as edbergs, beckers or sampras' but it surely is the best out there in the last couple of years. there are of course some old school tennis players like stepanek or haas who serve and volley often but this type of players is a rarity now especially in the hard hitting physical era.
its not about federers shots that describe his greatness - its the fact that he dominated the sport completely with a fluid and gracefull style in a physical game that tennis is now
no words can describe how beautiful he is doing on the tennis court. play great tennis may be a not easy thing to do, but play great with beautiful technique and form simply the impossible to do. but Roger Federer did it!
feds volleys can be the best because he is the biggest talent ever for the game by far so you cant say there bad becaus ethere not he has such a complete game
not saing their always the best but when he needs it he tends to come up with them at the best times
Roger has excellent volleys but they really aren't that amazing when compared to players KNOWN for their volleys...if that makes sense. I'd take Stepanek's volleys over Roger's any day. Of course...when you have groundstrokes like Federer you get yourself into plenty of positions where you don't have to be the best volleyer ever!
Serve, yes I agree. But Roger doesn't volley too much because his groundstrokes are so much better than Sampras. Sampras had to be a better volleyer in order to beat players like Andre, Boris, etc..
That's why today's players are struggling when Roger's puts his volleys on them, because he knows nobody will do it better than him in today's game.
Well, I at leas have noted oen thing which we shall all learn from. It is VERY stupid and ridiculously easy to adjust, but look how ferm is his wrist...
Even on killer passings from his opponents, the wrist angle remains, the hand and forehand stay solid as concrete.
I said he was the inevitable outcome of a flawless technic. This is an other proof.
Have to agree. This American was simply too Godly there. Seen some videos of him and have to kneel before the King.
But, I'd prefer to be Federer over Sampras for that I'd be more complete. Agassi resumed it quite quickly once. He said each time you look for teh best player to hit a certain stroke, you have to consider Federer as a potential best to play the shot.
Great Champions, both of them. Never seen players so often in highlight reels.
Yes, Pete was a better volleyer, but remember that his whole game (from 1996-2002) was built around volleying. His big serve would generally give him an easy first volley to deal with. Whereas Rog's game is built mostly around groundstrokes, he doesn't really have a huge serve (in the way that Pete did) and he STILL has sick volleys. That to me is amazing.
As much as disclaimers and haters pretend they are clearly sperated. One wil lsay Federer, the other Sampras. Although I answered Federer for many reasons over and over, I still think it's not such a huge margin; it can be seen after examination and not purely at first glance without hesitation.
Both are very great champions and you seem to understand the principles behind their games better than most of the commentator around here. Humility and temperence are great analysts qualities.
It's not a huge margin if you think of it in terms of head to head. On fast surfaces, Pete would win more often, and on slower surfaces, Rog would win more often and for obvious reasons. However, when you look at the statistics, the technique, the consistency, and the grace of each player, Fed is clearly the greater of the two. Sure, Pete might win close to 50 percent of all their matches, but Rog would have more in his inventory to choose from than just the aggressive tactics of Pete that...
...never won him a French Open title. Serve: Sampras>Fed Forehand: Fed> Sampras (close) Backhand: Fed>Sampras (not close) Offense from baseline: Fed>Sampras (close) Defense: Fed>Sampras (not close) Volley technique: Sampras>Fed Net game: Sampras>Fed (not close) Mental Strength: Sampras>Fed Adaptability: Fed>Sampras Just my list of what each player does better than the other. Fed comes out on top 5 of 9 on my list, making him the greater player. Anything else you can think of?
Federer has a more disguised and dervisified arsenal and he uses many play patterns in terms of offense, defense and counter. Strategically, I think he has shown to be able to adapt and counter other's strategy.
Pete had a more obvious and distinct play book. Yet, you had to deal with it and this was the hardest part. Nice pressure use.
The best quality of a tactician is how he can adapt himself to the situation. I'd give this to Federer.
And I don't think Sampras mental strenght worth Federer's, I mean he obviously is very strong mentally, but Federer looks so relaxed in every match, more than Sampras was... And they both are able to keep focused on their games, so I think Federer has a better mental.
Sacramones performance was terrible during the olympics and was the reason why Team USA lost. With that kind of performance and still made it to the national team, I wonder how many coaches did she have to sleep with in order to get the spot. Her ass is so fat, I think her ass is at least 20 pounds extra compared to her teammates. That was why she brought down Team USA. Stupid bitch should go to Jenny Craig. Alicia will go down as the worst, and most disgraceful gymnast in Olympic history.
Not only that but the dude seems to see... Something in his eyes that no one else can see. See the situatoin better than anyone else and all these players that have ground strokes that are on par with Federer just don't get there in time and can't see ahead like Federer does. He's superhuman in too many ways.
Actually, Largartosilvestre, I was wondering about Federer's volleys and thinking he may be one of the fet to have the best touch and feel for volleys in history if not the best touch and feel. He's seriously Sampras and Agassi put together or perhaps better seeing as he's done sharper angles consistently more so than Pete and Agassi. Not to say these players are awesome but sometimes Federer just makes you wonder if he's better than both put together.
He reminds me of Zinedine Zidane: He does everything right.

if he just volleyed like that a bit more! Wouldn´t say he´s that good of a volleyer compared to his baseline/midcourt game, that´s my opinion.
