An amazing Score that Patti wrote for her longtime friend and curator-Sam Wagstaff. This is documented in a documentary about her friends in the Arts who died during the brink of AIDS in the late 80's (Sam Wagstaff, and Robert Maplethorpe.) Patti does an amazing job as she interviews in this film closing with her reading this amazing work.
Patti is amazing. On many occasions I have said this or this song is one of her best, until I heard another one and then that one was just as good and so was the next one. She just has a very broad repertoire, always different, but always the same level of quakity. She is a goddess.
I listened to Patti Smith's reading of her book Just Kids (an abridged version) that aired on Radio 4 recently on BBC Iplayer, and I believe that she said that she wrote this song for Sam Shepard after he passed away, and gave it to Robert Mapplethorpe. Robert was ill at the time, so perhaps it is also for him, but as I understand it the song was actually written for Sam...
There was an interview with Patti in the Detroit News/Free Press a few weeks ago and she said, "I wrote the words to 'Paths that Cross' the night our friend Sam Wagstaff died from AIDS. I received so many letters from strangers who said the song provided comfort in the midst of their own losses. Some people have even inscribed it on the headstones of their lost loved ones."

There are a lot of "authentic" musicians out there, but Patti Smith is actually authentic, not just as a musician, but as an artist. She made me appreciate age, time, and the upper echelon that consists of artists who see life not in terms of record deals, but in producing and being a around and a part of art.
The only other mainstream artists I can think of that satisfies these conditions is Vigo Mortgensen
Paths that crossed have crossed again. Life gave us another unvaluable opportunity 20 years after and we let it go. So it´s clear we didn´t dserve it. Love u always, though.
Our paths crossed again. Life gave us an unvaluable second chance, and we let it go. Life always tells us when our moment has arrived, and mine is knocking on my door.Love you.
Patti will always be the gr¡eatest, and this song means so much to me. Sorry things have beeh like this, even when life gave us anohter sacred opportunity Somehting inside ouseleves tell us when we've got to go. This is my moment.. Love u.
Hi my dear camandula. Ja,ja, In spite this is "our" song forgive me if this time i dedicate it to my dear friend Chusa. Only kilometres separate us. Love u always, my dear friend. Paths that cross will cross again.
Thanks for posting this; its possibly my favourite song of all time, certainly my favourite of Patti's. I love that she was pregnant when she wrote it. Several of her friends passed away around that time, and she said it reminded her of how life goes on :) Just gorgeous.
To think she went from pissing on the stage at CBGBS and Rock n roll nigger to something as beautiful and heartfelt as this song. It shows just diverse a true artist can be.
To the friends and family members we lost...may we meet up again.

@illkeepitwithmine She actually wrote it for Robert as Sam Wagstaff, his partner and patron, was dying of AIDS.
It's an absolutely beautiful song from one wonderful artist to another, isn't it?

I think of my friend Goody, who left this world in October, 2005, when I hear this song.
I used a line from it in a 'zine whose cover graced his picture and a dedication. :(
