@hsvsv8 Actually petrol was well over 20 cents p/l in 1979 and all TV adds from this time will seem crude and corny by today's standards. I know coz I was around then.
Every time I see an HK GTS Monaro I feel a tinge of pain & demand my old man explain why he sold his in the late 70's. His reason was fuel jumped from 7c to 14c. No excuse is my usual reply. Would've been a fantastic family heir loom. haha
The ads back in the day were corny as hell. Still, a great looking car & whilst it couldn't compete with the Phase III GTHO in a straight line, it killed them in the corners.
I did a sponsorship deal(TAA) with Lloyd Robinson in the early 80's when they used Brock Commodores.I did a couple of shows as a pax in Lloyd's car...not for the faint hearted, especially the plastic explosive detonated in the middle of the crossover.I nearly died.I bought one of the team cars and had it restored, went like a dream. Those guys raised car control to the Gold Standard.
@thunderlips350 obviously you never travelled up the pacific highway( pre F3) from hornsby to newcastle @ xmas time) ...massive traffic jam.... windows down in the EH and sticking to the vinyl seats :)
It's interesting to see some of those Holden commercials and compare them to American GM cars of the era. The 1970's "Football, Meat Pies, Kangaroos and Holden Cars" commercial had cars that looked very similar to the Chevy Caprice, Malibu and Buick Century. The Monaro from some angles looks like it had styling cues from the Olds F-85 of 1965-1967. Interesting stuff.
I remember sitting in my mates brand new silver HK in 68 doing 112 mph down center road, bentleigh at midnight and leaving the ground when we hit the ramp over the train tracks at bentleigh station just before the picture theatre. Great memories then, but would not be so stupid now.
In 1968 my dad bought one of the first HK Monaro GTS V8/ Blue with GT stripes down the middle. It was a real head turner at the time and I felt like a VIP as a kid in the back. Dad died a year later and mum sold the Monaro in immaculate condition for what dad bought it new for. A similar perfect vehicle with very low low miles sold for $350,000 not long ago. In hindsight, if ONLY we had put it on blocks!
Cheap? Some stats from ABS and Redbook; New 2009 Commodore about $40,000 and average weekly earnings at $1250 = 32 weeks salary to buy the Commodore. 1968 Monaro at $2575 and average weekly earnings at $64 = 40 weeks to buy the Monaro. A new Monaro then would have taken a much bigger chunk out of the pay packet than a new Commodore today.
Good point, $65,000 for a HSV = 52 weeks pay, and $3100 for a GTS = 48 weeks pay. I just wanted to say that $2500 may seem cheap but it was a lot of money then.
BTW - *from* $2,575 -for that price you got a 161ci red six, manual three-on-the-tree, no synchro in first, drum brakes all 'round, no heater or fan.. basically, a two-door Belmont..
For a GTS 327 Chev V8 with US 4 speed and disc brakes, stripes, etc it was considerably more..
@Conniptions886 There was a base model -- like a two-door Kingswood really, with the 186 engine -- seen at 0:21 and 0:43. At 0:47 you can see the Kingswood tail lights and boot treatment. This is not a GTS like the other one featured. The Crawford's TV show "Matlock Police" had the actors bouncing around in a no-frills white HG base model Monaro. The most impractical police car I've ever seen lol.
@rainlori - Actually, Victoria Police did use some Monaros around that time... And if you want to talk really impractical police cars, they used a HSV 427 GTS a few years back, for inner-city duties...
You want to know "impractical"?? In Narooma (far sth coast nsw) the local cop had a mini Clubman!! I still think the worst was the Charger, impossible to keep on the road, arse light/front heavy... I had one and kept a bag of sand in the boot! Ur right tho, the HSV at $60K+ is a better comparison. Plus the "average" wage isnt $1250, every Woolworths employee could only HOPE for a pay packet like that! In 1970 I was earning $90/wk in a bakery...
@Lisfranc2 I recall in 1969 that the Chrysler Valiant Pacer could be offered with a rev counter sold at Repco for $20 - before one could accuse Chrysler of being cheapskates in this, it was of course 1/3rd of the average weekly wage at the time...
makes a man feel 10 ft tall wots the point in that if shes 5ft 2.yeah the monaro was always just that more out of reach for the family budget in the 60's.
Pretty cheap actually
