I never understood it myself. I was a senior when we did this and had introduced bassoons in the band a year before. I felt that oboes, bassoons, and even bass clarinets were pointless because you can't even hear them at all unless they had a solo for the field show which I think only happened once. And there were about 50 or so members who didn't come with us on the trip so I think we sounded alot better w/o them b/c we got an almost perfect score on parade and won grand champs.
what?! you march bassoons? ok...im lost. having played bassoon, trombone, and being drum major...i have never seen anyone march with a bassoon (successfully)
Holy, crap, I damn near had a heart attack when I found this video, I'm one of the tubas on the other side and yes it was ridiculously cold that near year, something like 18 degrees without the wind chill factor. The spit froze in my tuba when it was stored overnight.
