Well I really thought this would be overly obvious, like putting toothpaste on a door handle and asking someone to open the door. He probably thought about a trap but dismissed it because that would be way too simple.

The can should rather stand in plain sight, somewhere in front of the TV, in reach so that nobody thinks of going to the fridge instead. I would probably repeat this procedure for days before someone opens the can but that would've been worth it.
