This is the best comeback in tennessee football history what a way to upset the irish on thier home stadium shocking the irish fans i'm a navy fan Go Navy P.S. I respect tennessee
Thank you Notre Dame fans for your respect. I feel the same way towards your program. At least some of us know what true college football tradition is. This game exemplifies two of the best and most storied programs that have ever played the game and I have no doubt they will continue to make us proud for years to come (even though UT is struggling right now). God bless UT and Notre Dame.
As a Tennessee fan for some 45 plus years, we love the Notre Dame series. The Notre Dame fans are among the very best who visit Knoxville. They are knowledgeable and great fun. One of the best game I have ever seen was the 1990 game in Knoxville when ND won by 5. We had a wide receiver open in the back of the end zone, and a ND D-back closed and got a finger tip on the ball to preserve the win for ND. Then, the following year, we get this gem in South Bend.
Actually, the video doesn't comment on that, but the reason the kick missed was because the Tennessee player who tried to block the kick overran it a bit and the ball grazed off of his butt. After the game, he thanked his mom for endowing him with a big butt! So technically, Tennessee blocked the final kick; it wasn't a miss.

@donhawk - No, the first one was about 1980. I was still in high school and had to listen to the game on the radio. In 1991, I was already out of college and working. Ttphphtttt.
@FridayTN This game was played November 9, 1991. Tennessee and Notre Dame played in South Bend on November 11, 1978 (Tennessee lost 31-14), in Knoxville on November 10, 1979 (Tennessee won 40-18)
which may be the game you're thinking of. They played each other again in Knoxville November 10, 1990 (Tennessee lost 34-29), and in South Bend the next year (this game).
I just wish it was more publicized that the missed FG was not so much the kicker's fault as it was because a Tennessee player actually got a touch on the ball (his ass, amusingly).
ND fans should really blame their O-line, not the poor kicker. Because of the angle, Tennessee stacked a bunch of players on the right (their right) and completely ignored the left side. But the ND O-line didn't bother to adjust, so they had like 3 blockers on the left (their right) just doing nothing at the snap.
This ain't Jim Kelly if y'all were wondering our QB at that time was Andy Kelly Jim Kelly played for the U. Great win for the Vols!!! I'm an orange fan till I die baby!!!! Go VOLS!!
The only miracle at South Bend would be if the women decided to shave and ND did not murder another one of their students by placing him in a tower to film football practice in dangerous conditions.
@greymoose1000 ::: you know i have always said this to trolls and assholes and now im saying it to you , your parents should have used protection this way they could have spared the rest of humanity from you're low class stupidity.
@jonnybaze i was talking about the irish, could care less about the skins, oakland took care of them in the sb when i needed them to. God i loved that superbowl
If any SEC team earns the most respect, its Tenn. These guys will go anywhere, anyplace, anytime. What other SEC team leaves the Deep South and goes up to ND in late fall, or the West Coast at the start of the season? None but these guys do it all the time. Much respect to any teams that is willing to do that and the Vols have done it for a long time. That's why, as an Irish die hard, I have deep respect for the Vols.
@ripperduck yep i agree my vols have no problem going anywhere to play , if i heard correctly we will soon be adding the o-lieo state to the schedule and a few more out of conference big shots as well.............
gotta respect ND for adding good teams to there schedule as well:)
Notre Dame has had "good teams"...namely, the best in the country...on their schedule since 1913, when Jesse Harper decided to go anywhere to get good games, when nearby teams like Michigan refused to play them after they would beat them. On that 1913 schedule? @ Nebraska and @ Texas.
@athenaluv77 i guess you never heard of CAL have you? Don't remember the last time FL/bama ever got past Rockies, because they haven't! Case closed....
All this talk about the field goal call sucking & about Ward not being THE BEST need to understand this... I was 15 & we were losing to ND so badly that my Dad decided we should leave for a road trip early & just listen to the rest of the game on the radio. John Ward's "It's Good! ...It's NO Good! It's NO Good!" made my father swerve across 4 lanes of traffic & then pull off on the side of the interstate where we celebrated. That my friends, is just one of the MANY reasons John Ward is a Legend.
This is by far the greatest UT game ever played. Notre Dame was a great team back then, and there has not been a comeback greater than this in such a tough place. Gotta love the final score by the Vols and watching Carl Pickens take his defender out the back of the endzone allowing Aaron Hayden to get in to the endzone. Receivers today don't work that hard without the ball.
i love watching this because notre dame is an over respected football team im not discremenating them because there catholic but because they're still considered a six star football team and there doing terrible me and my dad live in tennessee and my dad was in the navy so now that navy is whippin' notre dame's ass im happy i mean navy went 10-3 last year and beat army and notre dame navy is doing better than notre dame and i still cant believe that jimmy clausen went to notre dame
great video.. does anyone have a vid from the 2005 UT, LSU game.. that was another game i won't soon forget..... kinda felt bad for the tigers being it was there first home game since Katrina.. but hey GO VOLS
I will NEVER... NEVER forget this this game!!!! GO UT!! For me, the most memorable game ever... I remember everything about this day!!! Great to find this wow!!!
@mababi33333 I was 19 when this was played. What I remember about it was the field goal we blocked right before halftime. When we got the touchdown, even though UT was still down 17 at the half, I somehow knew we were going to win. On the last ND field goal try, Jeremy Lincoln got in there so quick he nearly overran the kick. It went wide right only because it grazed his butt as Lincoln went past.
Also, probably the greatest game in the UT career of future Arenaball legend Andy Kelly.
I was 14 ;) I remember this game so well. Also made me a fan for life... Some greats on that team: Cal Pickens, Dale Carter and Andy Kelly. Too bad Kelly didn't have an NFL career. Ah the good ole days.
I was 10 years old and I remember the paper had an interview with lincoln and he thanked his momma for givin him that big butt. I also met him and andy kelly that year after a game and got their autograph, I still have them. Those were some great times for UT football that I will never forget.
I'm a Tennessee fan, and this is hands-down the greatest UT game I've ever seen *and* the greatest college football experience I've ever had.
Not only was it a great game and an awesome comeback by the Vols, but the Notre Dame fans were incredibly gracious. And if that wasn't enough, seeing a game at ND stadium is like going back in time.
As good as it gets. And let's all raise a cold one for Jeremy Lincoln's butt -- it saved the game!
as lee corso would say....."not so fast my friend"...lol...it wasnt your field goal unit that ruined that game for you, it was LOU HOLTZ. i've always been a lou fan, and still am, but as a tennessee fan of nearly 35 years, he blew that one for ya,and if i ever meet him, would thank him for it. he totally changed his gameplan in the second half. if ND keep running the ball in the second, no way we win, but hey,i'll take it. its a fond memory now...GO VOLS.
My point is that regardless of how Lou coached the game, if we don't have the blocked kick and/or the miss at the end, ND wins. Should it have come down to that? No. But it did, and it was the little things that cost us. At the same time, it's a tribute to your blocking unit. Hentrich clearly had his bell rung.
The Irish go 6-6, capping off the worst 3 years in school history; they fire their head coach (again); their QB and leading wide receiver decide to abandon ship; they lose to USC eight years in a row; they hire a new head coach and claim that "the glory days" are back; no bowl game, of course (they would lose anyway); they are truly a national disgrace . . . but JB5GoIrish can still be seen on a street corner in South Bend, mumbling incoherently "I loves my Irish!"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what the fuck is that i thought it was notre dames merical that is fucking rediculas hey but guess what remember 2005 ya we woop your ass hey but i shouldnt be talking tenn. is my second favorite team but notre dames my first and fuck 223fl maybe you can be pissed on you can fuck off go irish 2009 is ours we got weapons weapons tenn. would wish to have go irish
Wow. Just wow... So many things one could say to this post, if you'd call it a "post". But after actually trying to read this I realized that a response trying to explain things probably wouldn't do much good.
AS an Irish fan, 1313 notre dame or whoever he or she is is a moron there is one in every crowd even at Notre Dame -this is NOT an indicator of ND fan's Congrats Tennessee this was a classic win for the Vols and the Orange never said "die" That is WHY the SEC is so great so-good Luck Vols in 2009 in THE MOST COMPETITIVE conference in the nation. ( fyi , at the end of the game, girls in orange came up to us and said "fu-k u Notre Dame) that is NOT a true Vols fan good luck to you
@MrGlobalman67 I have been to a few ND/UT games AT ND and I must say I've NEVER experienced as much hospitality from another Team's fans than I have at South Bend. Ole Miss is a close second, but ND fans have gone out of their way to be kind to their opponents fans -EVEN AFTER LOSING- which is a hell of a LOT more than I can say about 98% of other school's fans. And Good Luck this year ND! When you beat the shit out of USC make sure you tell Lane we said hello : )
@alysonbrown13 I would be very happy to pass along your best wishes to Lane, when we do wreck the Trojans. And thanks for the kind words about us. I've heard some varying opinions about our fans, but I know damn well that we have nothing but respect for the SEC. They're the best conference and the best teams in the country. And good luck to the Big O....
lol..you said it sir. not much to add to that guys comment. if i were guessing, which actually i guess i am..lol..i would say it was a teenager or thereabouts that made those comments....GO VOLS...check your messages sir.
@cshep26 You see, he said that because that's what was happening on the field. John Ward is a legend. No one cares if you don't like him, he's still the true voice of the Vols.
john ward is missed. kesling is a joke.and everyone should be thanking lou holtz for that win. it still to this day befuddles me why he changed his gameplan in the 2nd half. the ran all over us in the first half, and controlled the clock as well as the scoreboard. in the second half he abandoned the run and went to the passing game..early in the 3rd quarter. THANKS LOU!!! i cant wait to see what the Kiffins bring us. i think year 2 will be toughest. heres my 4 yr prediction 9-4,7-6,10-3,12-1
I agree with you BigVOLdaddy on that one. I'm a huge ND fan that was at that game. Like you said the first half we ran at will, and the second half Lou lost his mind and started throwing the ball. That loss hurt me; congrats to your guys for playing hard and getting the win.
I was home from college watching this game on tv. Tennessee started coming back and I was going to pick up a date that evening and listening to John Ward on the radio. I still remember where I was driving when I heard John Ward say that the kick was good, and then say it was "no good". Ran into some Tennessee fans that night with long faces who had turned off their tv and thought UT had lost. They were kicking themselves when they found out UT pulled out best comeback in UT history.
@BenjaminJacob EVERY video, including the ones from every dame since the National Champrionshiptoday make me miss John Ward. There will never be another. God Bless that Man.
That has got to be the greatest game in UT history. ND was amazing then, and no one gave UT a chance to win that one. A minor technicality, but that screen pass works because Carl Pickens takes his defender out the back of the endzone. I wish receivers today, as a whole, would work as hard without the ball as they do with it, like Pickens did on that play.
Tennessee had a very explosive offense back then. Very few teams, including Florida, could stop this big Orange offensive juggernaut. I was surprised that Notre Daame jumped out to a good lead, but once Tennesse settled down, you saw the real Tennessee.
Brown supposedly wanted to come to Miami but after he started his melodrama act Shannon told him to take a hike. I think we'll be ok at RB anyway with Lamar Miller & Mike James. Oh and btw, I was at that one game in the OB when Tennessee just came in and dominated. The Kellen Winslow "I'm a soldier" game. The start of the descent into mediocrity.
The missed field goal at the end reminds me of the Syracuse game that occured last fall. Last ND game I'll probably attend for a very long time, coldest game I've ever been to, and Notre Dame blows it. So depressing.
I respect that. I'm pretty impartial to UT football. Neyland is a great atmosphere. and btw, thank you for taking bryce brown away from us. the guy is a drama queen.
John Ward WAS UT SPORTS... I remember many UT football games that would be on TV and people would turn the sound all the way down...Turn on the radio and listen to John Ward do the "PLAY BY PLAY"...John was the man..
i dont really care. hes just extremely cheesy and annoying. its one thing to tell what happens. its a whole different thing to try and steal the attention from the game itself.
Bob Kessling has gotten some better but John Ward was a broadcast legend.I think Kessling has gotten some better to the point where I can listen to him and Tim Priest now.
@mranonam *Key Term* "I go to UT". That means you have no idea who John Ward -THE LEGEND- is, what he represents, or what he means to Tennessee Football. You're entitled to your opinion, but as a "UT Fan" you should be ashamed. I suggest you listen to Kenny Chesney's "Touchdown Tennessee" which is a tribute to John Ward. A beyond well-deserved tribute. Dissing John Ward honestly shows a lack of depth as a supposed VOL. Unless of course, you're a Kiffin junkie.
@alysonbrown13 I'm entitled to my opinion but I should be ashamed of it? I don't get it. And I don't know what you mean by "Kiffin junkie"; I rather don't like the guy.
When did I make that comment? Hell, I transferred from UT a year ago.
Charlie Weis and Jimmy Clausen are BOTH hit in the head with snowballs. They suffer concussions and have to be replaced. ND gets a new coach and a new QB.
Tennessee had the 3rd hardest schedule in the nation this year no ideal who was 1st or 2nd

Why did our field goal unit have to ruin this game for us?
Congratulations, Tennessee. Amazing comeback, made even more amazing by the fact that it was in South Bend during ND Stadium's feared days.
JB5GoIrish 2 years ago
as lee corso would say....."not so fast my friend"...lol...it wasnt your field goal unit that ruined that game for you, it was LOU HOLTZ. i've always been a lou fan, and still am, but as a tennessee fan of nearly 35 years, he blew that one for ya,and if i ever meet him, would thank him for it. he totally changed his gameplan in the second half. if ND keep running the ball in the second, no way we win, but hey,i'll take it. its a fond memory now...GO VOLS.
BigVOLdaddy 2 years ago
My point is that regardless of how Lou coached the game, if we don't have the blocked kick and/or the miss at the end, ND wins. Should it have come down to that? No. But it did, and it was the little things that cost us. At the same time, it's a tribute to your blocking unit. Hentrich clearly had his bell rung.
JB5GoIrish 2 years ago
The Irish go 6-6, capping off the worst 3 years in school history; they fire their head coach (again); their QB and leading wide receiver decide to abandon ship; they lose to USC eight years in a row; they hire a new head coach and claim that "the glory days" are back; no bowl game, of course (they would lose anyway); they are truly a national disgrace . . . but JB5GoIrish can still be seen on a street corner in South Bend, mumbling incoherently "I loves my Irish!"
It's sad.

Notre Dame is a national disgrace.

Why would you say that?
why?
MrGlobalman67 2 years ago
@MrGlobalman67 I have been to a few ND/UT games AT ND and I must say I've NEVER experienced as much hospitality from another Team's fans than I have at South Bend. Ole Miss is a close second, but ND fans have gone out of their way to be kind to their opponents fans -EVEN AFTER LOSING- which is a hell of a LOT more than I can say about 98% of other school's fans. And Good Luck this year ND! When you beat the shit out of USC make sure you tell Lane we said hello : )
alysonbrown13 1 year ago
@alysonbrown13 I would be very happy to pass along your best wishes to Lane, when we do wreck the Trojans. And thanks for the kind words about us. I've heard some varying opinions about our fans, but I know damn well that we have nothing but respect for the SEC. They're the best conference and the best teams in the country. And good luck to the Big O....

john ward is missed. kesling is a joke.and everyone should be thanking lou holtz for that win. it still to this day befuddles me why he changed his gameplan in the 2nd half. the ran all over us in the first half, and controlled the clock as well as the scoreboard. in the second half he abandoned the run and went to the passing game..early in the 3rd quarter. THANKS LOU!!! i cant wait to see what the Kiffins bring us. i think year 2 will be toughest. heres my 4 yr prediction 9-4,7-6,10-3,12-1
BigVOLdaddy 2 years ago

They were kicking themselves when they found out UT pulled out best comeback in UT history.

treymcneil 2 years ago 15
That has got to be the greatest game in UT history. ND was amazing then, and no one gave UT a chance to win that one. A minor technicality, but that screen pass works because Carl Pickens takes his defender out the back of the endzone. I wish receivers today, as a whole, would work as hard without the ball as they do with it, like Pickens did on that play.
Futurecoach16 2 years ago

The start of the descent into mediocrity.
bringtheOBback 2 years ago
The missed field goal at the end reminds me of the Syracuse game that occured last fall. Last ND game I'll probably attend for a very long time, coldest game I've ever been to, and Notre Dame blows it. So depressing.

I respect that. I'm pretty impartial to UT football. Neyland is a great atmosphere. and btw, thank you for taking bryce brown away from us. the guy is a drama queen.

Unless of course, you're a Kiffin junkie.
alysonbrown13 1 year ago
@alysonbrown13 I'm entitled to my opinion but I should be ashamed of it? I don't get it. And I don't know what you mean by "Kiffin junkie"; I rather don't like the guy.
