  • R.I.P. Dilla & Marvin

  • Marvin's swaggin in this pic.

  • I loved this from the first moment I heard it years ago. I discovered it on the b-side of my mom & dad's old 45 of Whats Goin' On. Beautiful...

  • This song is one of my all time favorites!

  • Marvin Gaye was a prince among men,his music taught us all about life,in saying this he was a true artist,i miss him,he was a teacher, thanks for the music of life Marvin,r.i.p.

  • There really are no words that can adequately describe Marvin's talents. They truly were God given. No singer has ever touched my soul as Marvin's music has. Through the years, his music has taught me so much about life. Although he left us a legacy of music behind to enjoy, my one regret is that I never got to see him perform. Believing in God continues to give me faith that I will see my teacher one day. R.I.P. Marvin, Love you brother.

  • cool!

  • Didn't marvin gaye abuse his father?

  • Comment removed

  • @theov562 i don't think he did. but there were hard feelings I think and issues between him and his dad.

  • God is my friend....LOVE THIS VERSION SO MUCH!!!

    Only Marvin...

  • No artist...absolutely no other artist...ever....completely leaves it out there like Marvin. Heart, soul, such emotion....unequaled. That's what really defines Marvin Gaye amongst all other recording artists. It so blows me away to hear something I've not heard before like this particular recording of "God is my friend". Hey, who else can make a song as boring as our National Anthem a total work of art. Thanks you for sharing this.

  • Beautiful.

  • This b-side is just incredible, and to think, it's a B-SIDE!! Most artists can't even compare when you consider the artistry and magic contained here, again, not even the A-side. it's hard to comprehend all that is Marvin Gaye. Thank you for this!

  • I know he was talking about god. but was he also refering to his dad?

  • i like this version better than the original

  • Too me this is one of the greatest songs marvin ever wrote God bless his spirit RIP (tearing) I love you

  • This song always brings tears to my eyes.

  • Marvin........Sunday...and Love.....

  • No Words...."Marvin Gaye"...Nothing More!

  • Beautiful song and words. I've always love Marvin Gaye's style of singing. His voice is so soothing huh. Wish he was still around. Thanks for sharing this.

  • God is love :) but i stay with that N.I.V. cus K.J.V. confuses me. GOD BLESS!

  • I accidentally hit the negative rating..did not mean to do so. This is one of the greatest songs ever!!!

  • My first time hearing this version 10/21/10 but i like it.

  • rip marvin and j dilla.......2 greats that the word truly misses

  • I love this version, as well as the one to the album!!!

  • This is groovy song

  • The B side single version.....

  • This track originally was done by the Monitors and the song was "just to keep you satisfied" which Marvin helped produced. Then later Marvin used this beat for this song.

  • R.I.P MARVIN

  • Ubertune! but there seem to be 2 version of this song, does anyone know on which release this version comes from?

  • Marvin is the Mannnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • dilla sample at 1:19 :)

  • 1:19 dilla sample :)

  • Which cd is this version on? marvin Gaye is my fav artist

  • Woow, his voice is BEAUTIFUL!! R.I.P Marvin

  • @lickchick14 Praise the LORD for people who represent the Kingdom of GOD!!!

  • R.I.P. MARVIN

    R.I.P. DILLA

  • ...he makes the wind blow, he makes it rain he makes is snow

  • I didnt know about this version!!!! so good!!

  • 1:19 is sick

  • Amazing...!!!!

  • also the sample is slowed down, if you run the low pass filter over it with a little envelope it gets rid of most of the singing but not all of it

if u listen to the instrumental, the voice is still there

  • sampling one side in stereo without the vocals

the MPC will let your sample only left, only right, both in stereo, or both in mono

  • possible but i wouldnt rule out that Dilla and Common got the original tracks from Motown as they have cleared the sample anyway.

  • nah Jay Electronica used this beat first off a Jay Dee beat tape and if you hear the instrumental you can hear the voice in there at a low volume

I chopped this sample along time ago and got rid of the voice just the same

even if u listen to the Common Sense record you can hear the voice in there

  • @MrKkonEl How did you turn down the voice?

  • J DILLA!!!!!!! how did he get the sample out with marvin singing over, nevertheless BIG TUNE!

  • what song did dilla sample this in

  • Love Is... by Common

  • Love Is. Its on Common's Be.

  • top producers get the original tracks easily as the labels want to make money with the sample rights, Kanye for example has all the masters from stax in his basement.

  • nah it doesn't work that way

they don't give out the master reels, they record them to digital files and you can use them that way

Kanye has access to Stax's vault and so does Pete Rock I believe

  • i keep this song on repeat in my car. almost brings a tear 2 my eye. God is Love and God bless you all!

  • When I first heard this version on his "Anthology" set, I cried. :) Beautiful song from a beautiful brother. RIP, Marvin!

  • @timmy841212

I feel you on this my friend, I too felt it as I think about this song by the late great Marvin Gaye...she loved it--his version is a tear jerker!!! I don't call him god nor jesus christ but the feeling is still the same, Shalom!!!

  • @timmy841212

It truly is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard...even if I'm not a christian, nevertheless a powerful song by the late GREAT MARVIN GAYE, R.I.P...my brother!!!!

  • I agree with you 100%. It puts a lump in my throat when I play it. No one else did or does it better than he did.

  • I fully agree, Marvin moves me like no other artist!!!

This version is heaven sent to the ears!!

  • @rocklord411

You're right no one did it better...well said!!!

  • @young1s4u4

He was such a pure artist and singer, with the ability to convey his emotions and make you feel them just as strongly as he did. To me there will never be another one like him.

  • in my opinion way better than the original version..simply amazing :)

  • Simply beautiful and heartbreaking. Shows the heart and soul behind the voice. Still the standard for emotional R&B vocalization.
