Certainly unlike any version of Summertime that I've ever heard but I like it!
PS. Are you sure this is summertime? " It's summertime and the living is easy. The catfish are jumping, and the cotton is high." That summertime? I don't hear the tune at all.
My name is Sandy from rochester ny. I used to date Joey Locke in the seventies. Their was a jazz club named Jenks & Jones where Joey played, and I used to go several times per wk. He played with Spider Martin then. Wow. What a blast from the past
Masterpiece !! Vibraphone is by far my preferate instrument of them all !! So, you'll forgive me if I don't agree with you Mr Kirk !! And btw : these two virtuosis together : absolutely fabulous.
One should have a special sense of humor and huge open mind to find any valuable argument in your comment on the vibraphone... Maybe you've been tortured by this instrument as a kid? Or did I miss a bad joke? Or surely you don't know what you are talking about. Personaly I would not allow myself such bad criticism on any of those incredible musicians, even if I didn't like the sound of their instrument. My 2 cents.
Who knows? He might have hit a part of the vibes in that "micro-pause" interval... or the mic's stand (though this might have been more noisy?). But in a live performance of that level and speed, anything could happen! ;-)
Joe Locke never fails to amaze me. He is perhaps the greatest natural improvisor alive today, fresh, inventive, innovative yet earthy and soulful. His technique is simply unbelievable. A perfect example of all that jazz can be in the hands of a master. In this clip the whole is even greater than the sum of the parts as Geoffrey plays the intricate and lovely counterpoint to Joe. What a joy to listen to this! Thank you for the gift of this post.
Wow, this is INCREDIBLE. Geoffrey Keezer man, he's so convincing. He can get so much power out of the piano, and he's so honest. Everthing he plays he plays so clearly and powerfully. Joe Locke is the same way man, but I'm just biased because I'm a piano player. This is great.
This is a burning version of Summertime! Rock on Joe and Keezer!

This is real musicianship at the highest level. They both have awesome ears.
That makes the dialog possible.

Joe is playing the "Joe Locke Autograph Mallet" by pro-mark (JPL) - quite a soft mallet. A new version is already in the making.

Does anybody know what kind of mallets he is using?
