Where are you getting your information? Ashkenazi Jews make up a large majority of the USA's Jewish population, and besides most of them were killed off during WW2.
Most of the Jews who fought for an independent Israel were Mizrahis, and not Ashkenazis.
I too have visited Israel, as I am Sephardi Jew. And we do make up about 10%, but Mizrahis are the majority of Israel. Ashkenazi Jews only make up about 40% of Jews in Israel.
I am going off of the Israeli Census.
