Though it is entirely true that Roger is as ego-maniacal psycho, he wrote the most profoundly beautiful words and created some of the greatest songs of all time. Of course, David is without a doubt the second-greatest guitarist ever, and in my opinion the best singer, and had a great influence on the sound of many Floyd songs and generally that of the band.
Hendrix, because of the astounding advancements he made in rock in under three years. He was the first real great guitar player, as well as the greatest. I have to say, though, I enjoy Gilmour's playing more. His solos are like songs in their own right. He can play bad ass or beautifully, and usually did both at the same time.
B.B. King played blues, and that was it. He could play some neat notes, but that was it. Jimi brought mind-shattering guitar to rock, psychedelia, funk, soul, AND blues. If you say B.B. King, you'd have to say Robert Johnson, who, before Jimi, I'd say was the best.
B.B. King completely redefined the blues though. He was indeed a great guitarist. I agree that Hendrix is better, but you must give credit where it is due. you could say that Gilmour also had his limitations. his solos are nearly all revolving around the pentatonic or blues scale. Given, he could play this very, very well, and I am a huge fan of Gilmour. To label one guitarist as the "greatest" i think is a trivial pursuit.
King plays the same 'scale', but I've heard he likes to it in a different place on the fretboard, but that's irrelevant. Listen to 'On an Island', Gilmour's new solo album, it'll redefine all your thoughts on him. And I agree that making lists of the 'greatest' things is absurd, but I say this not because of some list, but because I have yet to hear a guitarist of greater ability. In truth, though, I enjoy Gilmour's playing more than Jimi's. Its much more refined, but I play more like Jimi.
if it wasnt for david gilmour there would have been no pink floyd roger waters ego was that big he thought pink floyd couldnt go on without him i think gilmour doesnt get the credit he deserves
Wow, love Pink Floyd :D. But I was wondering why there isn't any live visual footage from the early days like '73, while bands like The Who , the Rolling Stones ect. do have them. Does anybody know why?
There's live in Pompeii and there is also a video from Earls Court with an amazing performance of "Careful With That Axe Eugene". I seem to dimly remember one of them saying that the reason they used music videos during performances was that they didn't do much onstage, so that may have something to do with it.
waters wrote some amazing songs but he also said floyd would be nothing without him.. Hmmm think he was wrong david is the best there has ever been or will be
ya,waters ego was too huge.gilmour is not only underated as a vocalist and guitarist.but he was the glue that held the group when syd went off.and as proven when he went solo, waters needed floyd as much as floyd needed him.and why do we keep forgetting the contribution of mason and wright?
More importantly, Why doesn't Gilmour get as much credit for A) being a fantastic guitarist for a revolutionary band. B) Performing one of the top 10 greatest guitar solos of all time in this song. Something like #85 on Rolling Stones top guitarist list!?!? Come on
its not that waters was arrogant so much as he was being a dick..he told nick that he wasnt good enough for the final cut and wanted wright and gilmour to completely change their style..hence why david only plays on 2 tracks on the final cut and the rest is technically roger's first solo album..they were good without him but not great theyre gone forever now because we lost richard..this is a great track though..
Actually this flippin' video stops short of the solo. This solo is by far one of the BEST I have heard from the fingers of Gilmour. Mebbe, I'll upload it. Listen to the Solo on this pooch and you'll think how come the britons never erected a statue for them in the piccadilly area. Tear down all those stupid statues of old fart generals and erect one of the Floyd and Zep. They are the real jewels of the island and not some general that sent his soldiers to death and got himself a bloddy statue.
It's hard to tell. If they do its probably not going to be a big one. Theres also a chance they might have a single big reunion concert, like Zeppelin did this year. Which would more than likely be in London.
Probably one of my favorite Floyd songs of all time. Probably has to do with the beautiful tone of Gilmour's guitar in this song. The solo is just phenomenal.
As far as I know, none exists. I don't the technology really existed at the time to film a show the kind of show Pink Floyd did. To use films in concert, they had to keep the light levels low onstage, which means, the footage tended to turn out real murky. Apparently, this is the reason why the footage that was filmed for The Wall movie was never used. I think that's the main reason why not much concert footage exists of Pink Floyd pre-87.
You can play this video, the whole album, The Making of TDSOTM, PULSE live, DSOT Rainbow, KOYAANISQATSI and DSOTM, TDSO Gotham, Twilight Zone, Dream Theater, Tatamimat, Time Stealer, Roger Waters ~ TDSOTM World Tour, and more on my playlist: "The Dark Side of the Moon".
I think with all the sources of footage (video and live) they could put together a Dark Side of the Moon video showing all the members of PF, if they never reunite to do it. I wish that the upcoming show Roger's doing turned out to be a Pink Floyd reunion show with them all playing DSOTM.
It sucks that they didn't think of filming the 73-77 tours, although I think that there may be DSOTM footage from '72 (when it was a work in progress) that might exist.
Yeah, I dont know why they hold those things like they did take 10 years to release Pulse. They didnt even release Delicate Sound Of Thunder DVD yet. It's really odd!
There is footage in 72' when they were working on Dark Side. If you search Pink Floyd Pompeii interviews at the top, there will be some black and White videos. Some of those have some footage of them working on the album. Brain Damage & Us and Them are two songs I know that are in the footage, both of them sound sort of different then they do on the album, I guess that's because they did not tweak things around yet when the videos were made.
hmm this sounds an aweful lot like a bootleg i found on lime wire, and its from 1972, but its always a treat to actually hear dark side from 72-75 truely great, and wish you were here and animals too, that was the hay day for pink floyd, before the wall, and roger had his so to say "solo album" with the wall
