I remember rewinding and re-watching this scene over and over, and the "smile everyone" cracking me up every time. Well over a decade later, I still burst out laughing. Classic Disney!
oh man...taking time to create a complex plan to get ride of Basil by lurining him in to humiliate him and record a song just for the occation, and setting up a camera to take a picture to remember it by....wow Ratigan must really hate Basil!
he didn't forget to smile for the camera. I love insanely smart detectives, especially durring escape scenes! This movie started a life long love of them. when I first saw it arround age 5.
just want to point out something. You dont have to do all that math just to set off a mouse trap to stop the ball. Its called timing lol jk jk but I love this movie thanks for putting it up
I use to have these nightmares from one of these movies, for years it's been bugging me but i'm sure if it's either the great mouse detective or the rescuers there was a giant robot that i had nightmares about for years, does anyone recall that from any movies? :P
@cracker2321 Hmmm... a giant robot...maybe you're thinking of the Iron Giant. Or since you think it's a mouse movie, maybe it's An American Tail. That one had a giant robot in the end to scare off the cats. Hope that helps. :)
@totofan4ever Haha i loved the iron giant, just looked at An american tail and yeah that's the one, thank you so much that's been bugging me for a good 5 years :D It always seemed so much scarier to me as a kid but thanks alot :) and also, toto are awesome! :D
@MaximeLoonatic2 Such a thing is impossible; just the fact that it took this long for someone to think about making a sequel would ensure its suckiness. There should be some sort of rule that says you can't make a sequel to a movie (any movie, not just Disney) if
1) Any of the actors playing vital characters in the 1st movie are either dead (see Bambi 2) or unable to reprise their roles to the fullest extent (see Tron Legacy) and/or
2) It's been at least 15 years since the 1st was made.
@DestinyBell864 Many? Try three. One was only in a bonus feature on the Blu-Ray, only to be identified by the truly devoted Tron fan. The other two had gotten so old that their Grid counterparts had to be played by stunt actors either wearing a black helmet at all times so no one could tell it was just a stunt double (like Tron, who again could only be identified by the truly devoted Tron fan) or with the original actor's head substituted for their own by means of CGI.
@ShiroiFang Well, Basil's based off sherlock holmes, and so is the doctor... as well as Batman, Dr House, Dr hannibal lecter and... essensially everyone.
First, activate trap. Spring triggers gun. Bullet fires crossbow. Arrow severs axe-head, separating the mouse trap. Anvil released causing bottle to pop open. Change clothes in time to catch Olivia. Camera takes picture.
In summary, mouse trap ruined, gun empty, crossbow used, axe crushed - Olivia rescued. Picture development and process time - 1 hour. Video duration - 3 seconds.
Capacity for Ratigan's trap to horribly splat us - neutralized.
@totofan4ever yeah okey, noone can say if he didn't really really exist, but officially he's invented by his author--- but maybe he knew someone who was like his character...am I silly?^^
@goldkehlchen1993 Naw, I wouldn't say your silly. You just haven't read his original biography, yet! :D It's called Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street, by William S.Baring - Gould. You should read it! :D
@totofan4ever Wow! I'd love to! I read that Basil the great mouse detective is based on a book, too, "Basil of Baker street"^^ I'll read both of them. Little time ago I read Oliver Twist from Charles Dickons, that's pretty too!! I hope Sherlock Holmes is in German there too^^ Original English books are so difficult to read when they're so old---
@goldkehlchen1993 I still haven't read the original Basil books. I need to find some. Lol, don't worry. Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street isn't written in Ye Old English. The only difference is just some of the words are spelt differently. :)
Like others have said, so so underrated! The special little thing I love in this scene is the weird little smile and giggle fit that Basil has when he starts to figure out the plan. The animation is such a perfect nod to Chuck Jones. You see Jerry from Tom & Jerry or The Grinch or Wile E. Coyote making that face all the time. And since Basil in in a sort of Roadrunner-esque ACME death trap, it seems even more appropriate!
@SSCrion "Goodbye So Soon," an original composition by Henry Mancini who composed the score for "The Great Mouse Detective and sung by the late great Vincent Price.
It's so epic how he smiles for the camera because it is such a fuck you to Ratigan - if things had played out as Ratigan planned, he would expect to see a picture of Basil and Dawson's splattered, gory corpses (this is so sick if you think about it - what is he going to hang up the picture next to his Basil voodoo doll?) but instead he's going to see an actual picture. The subtly of the character relationships in this movie is unmatched for a Disney film.
The first time I saw this scene, I was like, "Woah. Basil's eyes are creepy and he looks kind of like a nutcracker!" Haha. This is definitely one of the best animated films of all time.
OMGOMG OMG OMG OMG OMG O M FREAKIN G! THANK YOUUUUUU!! I HAVE BEEN HOPIGN SOMEONE WOULD POST THIS..THIS IS THE BEST PART OF THE WHOL FREAKIN MOVIE! I LOVE THIS!
@dementeddentist Yes, I just love the trap scene. It is one of the most brilliantly conceived moments ever in animation - turning the trap against itself by springing it at just the right moment. We should keep it in mind if we are ever caught in a trap.
It's criminal how underrated this movie is. What with its brilliant score, charismatic, engaging characters and pretty much non-stop action, it's a shame this didn't gain so much spotlight.
@ZeroGhostDog It's probably why Disney didn't make a Basil sequel, and there was scope for one. Sadly, a lot of films get underrated when they deserve more. Maybe Basil will undergo reappraisal in future generations and become regarded as a Disney classic.
@ancalites Underrated at the time. It didn't become a household name until the re-release. Very much like how it took them about 20 years to put Oliver and Company out for home viewing. They had a gold mine and sat on it.
One of my favourite scenes in the film. I love Basil - he's so genuis. I only saw this film for the first time yesterday and I clapped at the end. LOVE HIM!! I want to have a husband like Basil when I'm older :D Crazy, talented and eccentric.
We're about to be horribly splatted and all you can do is lie there, feeling sorry for yourself! Something about the word 'splatted' makes me laugh, along with Basil's demented grin.
I always get a laugh attack when their eyes change color (Ratigan and Dawson = red/orange, Basil = green).
Does anyone else think this scene was the inspiration for the game Mouse Trap?
