  • Does anyone else think this scene was the inspiration for the game Mouse Trap?

  • I remember rewinding and re-watching this scene over and over, and the "smile everyone" cracking me up every time. Well over a decade later, I still burst out laughing. Classic Disney!

  • Lolz jes noticed Basil actually looks up to see how the anvil comes down.

  • Thumbs up if you think Basil should be in RAVENCLAW.

  • Whoever thought that physics could save your life?

  • Just saying, I thought that the song on the record was pretty catchy.

  • @m0urningwerw0lf371 I know right? You can find it on Youtube actually. It's called "Goodbye So Soon." :)

  • cannot express how much i love this movie

  • so how do you calculate the square root of an isosceles triangle?

  • I'm crazy. And that's my new catchphrase: SMILE EVERYONE!!!

  • That man who voices Basil INSPIRES me... this scene just makes me grin xD

  • Next time something scary happens to me and my friends, I'm gonna yell "Smile everyone!".

  • @IndianaJonesfans09 Totally agree. Even if they look at me like I'm crazy. But aren't most people?

  • @sunnyhoney1232 all of my friends are crazy.

  • oh man...taking time to create a complex plan to get ride of Basil by lurining him in to humiliate him and record a song just for the occation, and setting up a camera to take a picture to remember it by....wow Ratigan must really hate Basil!

  • he didn't forget to smile for the camera. I love insanely smart detectives, especially durring escape scenes! This movie started a life long love of them. when I first saw it arround age 5.

  • @fantasyrulestheworld

just detectives, I love any protagonist that's always ten steps ahead

  • Now that's a picture perfect moment!

  • just want to point out something. You dont have to do all that math just to set off a mouse trap to stop the ball. Its called timing lol jk jk but I love this movie thanks for putting it up

  • I use to have these nightmares from one of these movies, for years it's been bugging me but i'm sure if it's either the great mouse detective or the rescuers there was a giant robot that i had nightmares about for years, does anyone recall that from any movies? :P

  • @cracker2321 Hmmm... a giant robot...maybe you're thinking of the Iron Giant. Or since you think it's a mouse movie, maybe it's An American Tail. That one had a giant robot in the end to scare off the cats. Hope that helps. :)

  • @totofan4ever Haha i loved the iron giant, just looked at An american tail and yeah that's the one, thank you so much that's been bugging me for a good 5 years :D It always seemed so much scarier to me as a kid but thanks alot :) and also, toto are awesome! :D

  • @cracker2321 You're very welcome! That giant cat has scared me when I was a kid as well. Glad I could help. :)

  • Oh, happy memories! Although I do remember having a very odd little-girl crush on Basil's voice...;p

  • And I thought CARTOON NETWORK was bipolar!

  • Ok, if he can do all that with math, I need to hire him as a tutor sometime.

  • @SilyaBeeodess You had him tutoring you, you'd be a shoe in for Harvard.

  • Wow I'm gob smacked right now this was my fav movie as a child

  • Smile everyone!

  • Pure EPICNESS!

  • @2:15 Dawson: "Oh shit, I blinked. Can we do it again?"

  • the madness starts at 1:30 ;)

btw by madness i mean the shear genius :D

  • this movie deserves a sequel; but not messed up like others!!

  • @MaximeLoonatic2 Such a thing is impossible; just the fact that it took this long for someone to think about making a sequel would ensure its suckiness. There should be some sort of rule that says you can't make a sequel to a movie (any movie, not just Disney) if

    1) Any of the actors playing vital characters in the 1st movie are either dead (see Bambi 2) or unable to reprise their roles to the fullest extent (see Tron Legacy) and/or

    2) It's been at least 15 years since the 1st was made.

  • @ztslovebird hey for tron legacy many original tron characters were still there!

And there are a few great sequels!

  • @DestinyBell864 Many? Try three. One was only in a bonus feature on the Blu-Ray, only to be identified by the truly devoted Tron fan. The other two had gotten so old that their Grid counterparts had to be played by stunt actors either wearing a black helmet at all times so no one could tell it was just a stunt double (like Tron, who again could only be identified by the truly devoted Tron fan) or with the original actor's head substituted for their own by means of CGI.

  • @DestinyBell864 And while there HAVE been a few good sequels, keep in mind that the key word in that sentence is FEW.

  • Physics rules !

  • Basil's expression at 1:24 is both terrifying and glorious.

  • BRILLIANT! ... Smile Everyone! =D

  • This Movie is EPIC!!!

  • I'm actually really glad Ratigan didn't see that. His head would have just exploded.

  • oh man he did all that math in his head! :)

  • Basil is so incredibly intelligent, he knows the square root of an isoceles triangle.

  • The trajectory multiplied by the square root of an isosceles triangle....

  • Most Epic Picture Ever!

  • Smile everyone! Lol gotta luv Basil. :D

  • And THIS, my friends, is why Basil's awesome

  • @gryffonmanic

    You said it, pal.

    You said it.

    By the way:

    Smile everyone

  • Is it strange that Basil makes me think of Doctor Who?

  • @ShiroiFang Not at all.... actually.... I can totally see it! That's Awesome! :D

  • @ShiroiFang He is supposed to remind you of Sherlock Holmes -_-

  • @ShiroiFang Well, Basil's based off sherlock holmes, and so is the doctor... as well as Batman, Dr House, Dr hannibal lecter and... essensially everyone.

  • @ShiroiFang it makes me think of BBC's Sherlock...:-)

  • @karaokefischer You're my hero.

  • I love this! Basil is so funny!

  • First, activate trap. Spring triggers gun. Bullet fires crossbow. Arrow severs axe-head, separating the mouse trap. Anvil released causing bottle to pop open. Change clothes in time to catch Olivia. Camera takes picture.

In summary, mouse trap ruined, gun empty, crossbow used, axe crushed - Olivia rescued. Picture development and process time - 1 hour. Video duration - 3 seconds.

Capacity for Ratigan's trap to horribly splat us - neutralized.

  • @NicholasGeschke You sir, win the internet.

  • The messed up. His pants was blue than gray.

  • @Alewolf01 How can he change clothes so quickly? .....OH MY WORD, I GOT IT! Basil is Superman!

  • i love basil <3

  • Smile everyone.

  • @sanjonn It's funny, because they almost died!

  • his eyes get all green when he says set of the trap now!

  • I LOVE BASIL!!!!! It's a pitty that Sherlock Holmes didn't really exist...would be great^^

  • @goldkehlchen1993 Who said he didn't exist? :)

  • @totofan4ever yeah okey, noone can say if he didn't really really exist, but officially he's invented by his author--- but maybe he knew someone who was like his character...am I silly?^^

  • @goldkehlchen1993 Naw, I wouldn't say your silly. You just haven't read his original biography, yet! :D It's called Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street, by William S.Baring - Gould. You should read it! :D

  • @totofan4ever Wow! I'd love to! I read that Basil the great mouse detective is based on a book, too, "Basil of Baker street"^^ I'll read both of them. Little time ago I read Oliver Twist from Charles Dickons, that's pretty too!! I hope Sherlock Holmes is in German there too^^ Original English books are so difficult to read when they're so old---

  • @goldkehlchen1993 I still haven't read the original Basil books. I need to find some. Lol, don't worry. Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street isn't written in Ye Old English. The only difference is just some of the words are spelt differently. :)

  • @totofan4ever ah, okey!! I'm excited, tomorrow I'll go to the library!! Thanks!!

  • @goldkehlchen1993 Your very welcome! :D

  • at 1:14 i was like O_O. oh no. why basil, WHY!? why did you have to snap now?!

  • I love how the complexity of Ratigan's trap was the key to escaping from it!

  • wait a sec, DID THAT ANVIL JUST CRUSH AN IRON AXE?!

    logical... xD

  • ha ha ha!

  • This is also my favorite scene in one of my favorite movies. Ah, Basil of Baker Street!

  • Wow..and here i still have to use my fingers to count sometimes..

  • Like others have said, so so underrated! The special little thing I love in this scene is the weird little smile and giggle fit that Basil has when he starts to figure out the plan. The animation is such a perfect nod to Chuck Jones. You see Jerry from Tom & Jerry or The Grinch or Wile E. Coyote making that face all the time. And since Basil in in a sort of Roadrunner-esque ACME death trap, it seems even more appropriate!

  • Incidently what is the Square root of an Isosalise Triangle? :)

  • Comment removed

  • Ok. Gotta ask: Does anyone know what the name of that song was on the record player?

  • @SSCrion Goodbye so Soon

  • @SSCrion "Goodbye So Soon," an original composition by Henry Mancini who composed the score for "The Great Mouse Detective and sung by the late great Vincent Price.

  • Basil: We'll set the trap off now!

Me: O.O HE'S GONE MAD! *runs in circles*

Mackenzie: I've always known my Uncle was nuts -_-

  • Ratigan was voice acted by Vincent Price....Such a gentleman R.I.P.

  • this is hilarious! Ratigan would go ape shit if he saw that picture! XD lolz

    thanks for the upload

  • lolwut

    I love Basil!

  • This is where it pays to be knowledgeable in math and physics!

  • I think Basil is kinda cute and adorable!!!!(: <3

  • He's mad.

Basil- "Thank goodness for that, if I wasn't this would probably never work."

  • @Neo232100 HA! That fits so perfectly! :D

  • @totofan4ever Thank you I try. :D

  • @Neo232100 Ha! Love that.

  • I would LOVE to see Ratingan's face when he got to see that picture xD

  • @LoveShonenManga94 probably give him a heart attack xD

  • Best.

    Scene.

    Ever.

  • THANK YOU. I love this part- definitely a highlight in the movie. : )

  • Basil's like "SOB!!"

  • Haaah, man, why did you guys all have to go and point out how underrated this wonderful movie is? Now I'm sad about it.

  • Basil I love you <3

  • This was always my favorite movie as a kid.

  • We all know he use differental ordinary equations to figure that out with a splash of physics.

  • SMILE EVERYONE!!!!

How Can´t You Smile after that ?

  • I WANNA SEE THI MOVIE XD

  • It's so epic how he smiles for the camera because it is such a fuck you to Ratigan - if things had played out as Ratigan planned, he would expect to see a picture of Basil and Dawson's splattered, gory corpses (this is so sick if you think about it - what is he going to hang up the picture next to his Basil voodoo doll?) but instead he's going to see an actual picture. The subtly of the character relationships in this movie is unmatched for a Disney film.

  • LOL! Basil's rape face at 1:24!!! XD

  • "Ratigan's proved he's more clever than I."

Well no offence Basil but Ratigan is a rat and rats are smarter than mice, maybe this is why you couldn't catch him any earlier.

  • The first time I saw this scene, I was like, "Woah. Basil's eyes are creepy and he looks kind of like a nutcracker!" Haha. This is definitely one of the best animated films of all time.

  • OMGOMG OMG OMG OMG OMG O M FREAKIN G! THANK YOUUUUUU!! I HAVE BEEN HOPIGN SOMEONE WOULD POST THIS..THIS IS THE BEST PART OF THE WHOL FREAKIN MOVIE! I LOVE THIS!

  • Best hero escape... EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is my favorite scene, it's so awesome! Basil's such a genius. Such a wonderful movie.

  • @dementeddentist Yes, I just love the trap scene. It is one of the most brilliantly conceived moments ever in animation - turning the trap against itself by springing it at just the right moment. We should keep it in mind if we are ever caught in a trap.

  • Multiplied by the square root of an isosceles triangle... XD

I love it when Basil starts talking to himself. To funny.

  • @Rackou87 It would be interesting to know just how much genuine physics and mathematics are involved in Basil's calculation.

  • @Goodiesfanful Probably enough to make your brain explode. Either that, or he's just having fun freaking Dawson out. XD

  • It's criminal how underrated this movie is. What with its brilliant score, charismatic, engaging characters and pretty much non-stop action, it's a shame this didn't gain so much spotlight.

  • @ZeroGhostDog You took the words right out of my mouth.

  • @ZeroGhostDog It's probably why Disney didn't make a Basil sequel, and there was scope for one. Sadly, a lot of films get underrated when they deserve more. Maybe Basil will undergo reappraisal in future generations and become regarded as a Disney classic.

  • @ZeroGhostDog It's underrated? It has 81% on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • @ancalites Underrated at the time. It didn't become a household name until the re-release. Very much like how it took them about 20 years to put Oliver and Company out for home viewing. They had a gold mine and sat on it.

  • My favorite part is still Dawson's face at 1:06

  • @totofan4ever Thanks :D

  • One of my favourite scenes in the film. I love Basil - he's so genuis. I only saw this film for the first time yesterday and I clapped at the end. LOVE HIM!! I want to have a husband like Basil when I'm older :D Crazy, talented and eccentric.

  • @ZeroGhostDog "I want to have a husband like Basil when I'm older"

    ... What, a mouse?

  • @Drakodan No, no no. A human, of course. I meant as in his mannerisms and personality, not a mouse XD

  • you know something Basil reminds me of the Doctor.

  • @Gundamknight100 O.o FINALLY im not the only one!! Your right! he is...Especially David Tennants Dr.!

  • @Gundamknight100 I see what you mean, because they're both eccentric and loopy!

  • 2:09

    Always class, always :]

  • i love the look on his face at 1:23 lol

  • HOLY SHI- BASIL WENT CRAZY ON US! -starts hitting u with a jackhammer- :O

  • We're about to be horribly splatted and all you can do is lie there, feeling sorry for yourself! Something about the word 'splatted' makes me laugh, along with Basil's demented grin.

I always get a laugh attack when their eyes change color (Ratigan and Dawson = red/orange, Basil = green).

  • Set it...off...now? Y...Heh-heh, hehe. Ha-ha-ha! Yes! We-We'll set the trap off now!

  • My favourite scene from my favourite animation movie as a kid!

  • The sounds of everything springing about at the end were used as arrow noises in Robin Hood... I've only just noticed!

  • Wow, that's amazing hearing! I never noticed that! That's so awesome!

  • @fiofofionomoto I totally remember that! 8DDDD

  • I love this scene!!!

  • 1:14 and Basil finally snaps...lol This has got to be one of my most favorite scenes from this movie. Thanks for posting it.

  • @oOblackwarriorOo

Your Welcome! ^^ It's one of my favorites too.

  • @oOblackwarriorOo Yeah, his demented/evil smile always has me in stitches.

  • my fav part of the whole movie!!!!

  • @totofan4ever This is Funny

  • Basil looks like he's gone mad.

  • @EvilgidgitReturns GONE mad?

  • @genderbenderphile Yep, gone mad. When he gets the idea to set off the trap, he gets that crazy look in his eyes.

  • @EvilgidgitReturns Nah, he was mad from the beginning, still <3
