Surely it's not a blissful sleep Cale's describing in the lyrics (don't be fooled by the pretty piano). The townsfolk are sleeping at midday, which may be cool for a modern-day stoner but is hardly the pioneer spirit of the Old West. The townsfolk sleep despite a Civil War passing through, they sleep through a boom, and a bust. It's the sleep of forgetting, of being oblivious to life. Is that blissful? Not to me it ain't.
