I'll never understand why everyone has to choose either Dave or Sammy. They were a great band with Dave, "Fair Warning". "Van Halen II", and "1984" are all time great albums. When Sammy took over they did the great "5150" album. It all sounds good to me!!
It took 10 years for Van Halen to have their first top-10 hit "Jump" #1 in 1984. It took just one album, 5150 (1986), for VH to have not only a top-10 hit "Why Can't This Be Love" #3 but also their first #1 album. Having Sammy Hager join the band was a great joice.
@downincognito76 i dont think so, because they had more success than ever in concerts. thanks to the ou812 van halen became the king of glam (sorry KISS, but you know that it´s true)
I think 5150 has some great songs on it but there's a few that have aged badly, Love walks in is a really dated song and i've never liked Dreams but the less said about Outside the better!!!
Both era's of VH were great but with Sammy onstage there was that brotherly feeling...lots of camraderie....a warm feeling. Eddie wanted to focus more on professionalism..be more of a musician....and with Sammy onstage they carried that out with great sound etc...The Dave years may have produced classic albums with a less polished sound but he left and should have stayed gone. Now VH have brought back that karate kicking, lunatic rambling, 50 yr old with a snotty attitude.

sammy did ruin the band , 5150 is brilliant , but thats a dave album , dave even wrote some stuff on it ou812 n balance r avg albums fu c k is pretty good though . SH lyrics r very avg at best , after 5150 it was down hill 4 sure
i wasnt at the writing process but , its well rumoured that he wrote the original melodies 4 summer nights n good enough, the change from 5150 to ou812 is amazing , totally differant, down hill from 5150, record sales, live they didnt improvise at all with sammy . not to mention ou812 is prob the worst recorded album of all time.
man i luv!!! skyscraper!! , knucklebones , just like paradise , hot dog n a shake , the rest is classic , i actually rate it in my top 20 . The tour he did with that cd was brilliant . theres heaps worst , ou812, 2 , 3 gees, the sammy hagar solo catalogue
fair enough bro , but gees i think eat em n smile and skyscraper r as good as any vh , man id rate eet em n smile in the top 3 or 4, Yankee rose , shyboy , goin crazy , brilliant . Vhs got way worse , cant listen to balance/ou812 , 3 isnt as bad as people make it out to be , 2 is easily the worse of roth . His solo stuff is not to everyones taste , but it has some great moments , dave did things his own way , some of it is out there , but good all the way
No but 3 of the songs were written for Dave, "5150", "Summer Nights' (formally known as "Eat Thy Neighbor"), no one is sure of the last song, IMO it is "Best of Both Worlds".
@MeanStreet1981 I think Ed had "Dreams" as well when they were rehearsing with Dave, and I remember Dave said Ed started writing more "morose" music and that's another reason why he left.
What do you mean "gay"? Sam sure ain't the coolest guy in RnR but.. But, if you wanna expose Sam as a homosexual male person, I don't think you got it right... he just ain't. Not that being a "gay" is a bad thing... but how about being a little pissheaded psycho macho? it's worse, isn't it? :)
At 3:34 is a perfect example of how sammy turned van halen into,"pre-teen" music. Finally, dave is back and they really can get rockin with a new album.
DLR could only do the same thing for so long. Music & society was changing radically in the mid 80's; I think they would have fizzl;ed out into the sunset trying to keep on doing the same old thing like a bunch of old farts
The point that many people fail to understand is that Dave brings the fiesty spirit to Van Halen.....there was a ton of arguing during those early albums but look at the quality of music that came out of it....Dave called this "belligerent enthusiasm" and it made VH legendary.....when Spammy joined the band it suddenly became "let's all just get along and make nice, easy songs about love".....FUCK THAT SHIT.....I want a rock band to be edgy, furious, and fun...that was Roth Van Halen to a "T"...
I love Van Halen with Roth OR Hagar. Except the 2004. OH MY GOD I had tickets to the Toronto & Minneapolis show, I didn't go to the Minneapolis show, the Toronto show was so fuckin' horrible, I left after Right Now it blew to put it simply.
Eddie Van Halen had such an amazing tone back then and still does now. Its totally mind blowing to know that the heavy overdrive sound on all the albums came from his amps and not a pedal.
This was a GREAT special. I remember watching this as a 16 year old when MTV first showed it...back when MTV cared about music. Thanks for putting this up!!!
Alot of you have been asking where part one is. For some reason, Youtube keeps removing it due to "copyright violations". Why they allow parts two through four to stay, I don't know. I have reposted it again. Hopefully, it will stay up for awhile this time.
well i think sammy is a nicer guy and can sing a lil better then dave but i like dave (romeo delight)better then sammy songs(how does it feel when its love)
Hey! Notice at 8:04 the ticket prices on the sign in the background? "VAN HALEN all seats $15.50"...lol. My how times have changed...SOMEBODY has to pay for Wolfies new Lamborghini.
I don't mean anything negative, but it's called inflation. The minimum wage was 3.35 in 1986(in Rhode Island) The real cost would be $32 to $33, equivalently.
Some things I want to point out that I find funny:
*The drunk guy screaming "EDDIE RULES!!" I wonder if he passed out even before he made it into the arena.
*The goofy teen talking about his dreams. The 80's high school haircut is evident here.
*The fact that in 1986, $15.00 got you into a Van Halen concert blows me away.(though I paid $16.50 to get on the floor when I saw them on the 5150 tour). You pay almost that much for a movie ticket nowadays.
The concert was great...soundwise and set. As I recall, they played for close to 2 hours. I saw them in New Haven...the same show they filmed "Live Without a Net" and that video showed only about 60 % of the concert. They also played "Dreams", "Good Enough", "Jump" (with a guy pulled from the crowd singing)...and a cover of "Wild Thing". They actually opened with "You Really Got Me". Setwise about the same length as all the other VH tours I saw.
i would assume the 5150 tour had a short set list because sammy didnt like playing many roth tunes, and sammy didnt have too many solo hits to bring to live VH shows, so all they had were 9 songs off 5150 (that is if they played em all) some hagar songs, and some roth songs (if any)
Actually, Sammy had a few big hits by then "Heavy Metal", "One way to Rock", "You're Love","3 lock box" "Remember the Heroes". The VH approach was to extend the hell out of select songs, making the set list shorter.

i think when hagar was in van halen, it gave a little freedom for eddie, and i think cuz of that thats why eddie got to be such a ass over the time.
but with dave in van halen, you know, hes the bigger asshole in the band, so he sorta puts eddie in line. but then you have dumbass dave.
so either way there positive and negative. its just the glass half full/empty thing i guess.
