  • great tune with a great sound - so many solid yet obscure doo wop-type tunes on youtube. and some nice organ backing the gals up. thanks for posting.

  • I have a question for music buffs. I believe that I am the biggest Minnie R. and Tammi T. fan ever. Did Patti Labelle have a connection with Minnie Riperton and Tammi Terrell? I read that Minnie Riperton was once apart of the Starlets. Is this the same group? Also, did Tammi Terrell sing backup for Patti Labelle and the Bluebells? Last question, if Minnie R. was apart of the Starlets, which songs did she sing, and could someone download these?

  • @memmory1000 the only connection i know of patti with motown in the old days was actually when cindy birdsong went with the supremes. tammy terrell originally recorded under her real surname with chess in chicago as tammy montgomery. if she was a member of any girl group, i'm not aware. minnie started out as a member of the gems. they were the girl backup group at chess/checker in chi-town, and later was with the rotary connection soul-pop group and stevie wonders wonderlove backing group

  • @memmory1000 These are not the same 'Starlets' that Minnie sang with. Minnie sang with The Gems whom also recorded under different names. In 1967 The Gems recorded one song as 'The Starlets' named 'My Baby's Real'.

  • Great group, almost as good as the Chantels. Never heard of them

The Starlets - My Last Cry

  • Hi, the CD is called "The Early Years" by Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles and it is the last track on the CD it is the alternate out-take version with Sarah on lead, her voice is very soft and she does a great job, I asked her recently if it was definitely her on that version as the booklet says it is and she told me yep it is her and the CD booklet was right. awesome or what?

I will have to upload it on here too soon as I have already uploaded the other two versions. xxxx

  • I forgot to mention that I have uploaded Patti and the Bluebelles version of I SOLD MY HEART TO THE JUNKMAN on You Tube for you all, and it is the right version as it is Patti, Cindy, Nona and Sarah on it. Hope this helps you confused peeps, Lol xxxx

  • My mom was in this group..she is Mickey McKinney..

  • Thank you pghpookie.

  • Pghpookie, I wonder if you can help me figure out this "I sold my heart to the junkman" business. I always read that Patti and The Bluebelles recorded their own version of it later, but every version I have sounds to me like the Starlets, not Patti Labelle and the bluebelles. Have you ever heard a version with Patti's actual vocal? I am a big fan and it's weird to me that after all these years, the song is still misattributed. (And so unfair to the Starlets!!!)

  • Pghpookie, sorry to post again but I just discovered something! The actual Bluebelles version is on The Essential Patti LaBelle, on Amazon. You can hear a clip of it there, and it is totally different--and definitely early Patti LaBelle! So the version on every other Blubelles album (and I have a lot of them) is indeed the Starlets. I actually think that's pretty lame of Patti LaBelle not to have rectified that.

  • thanks highbelter!! i've only heard the original, though you, and a few others have indicated to me there had been a 'patti' version done some time in the late 60's. the time i'm not sure of , but as you are the latest in a line of people who said they can definately discern the difference, i'm sure you're right. as far as patti goes, she was young, and grabbed an oppurtunity to tour on a record that she had very little to say about as far as who's name was put on the label. Thanks!!!

  • @highbelter She does explains that whole situation in her autobiography. it was truly the president of the record label who was up to no good.

  • @jaybyrdlab Thanks, jaybyrdlab. I actually read her bio, but I guess my brain cells are going...

  • @highbelter Hi, I know you said you have a fair few albums of the Bluebelles, I have loads of their CD's too, but do you live in the UK because there is an English CD of the Bluebelles over here which is only available in the UK and that features all the versions as I have it, on it is the Starlets version, Patti lead, Sarah lead and also alternate take too?

If you haven't got that CD, let me know and I will tell you what it is called? xxx

  • @michellesvideosuk Hi there, thanks for your messages. There is a CD with a Sarah lead?!!?!? Oooooh, I gotta get that! :) So exciting! What is the name of the album?

  • @highbelter Yes Patti and the girls did do their own version as I have it on a CD, I have three versions, the Starlets, Patti lead, rare Sarah lead and alrernate take, all three version are different, Patti lead is more faster and upbeat. I also know Cindy Birdsong and we chatted about that song and she confirmed what Patti said and that they did do their own version, I am seeing Cindy in a few weeks so I will take my versions with me and ask her for more info. xxx

  • Sorry to hear Jeannette passed. This was one of the first songs we performed. We love this song and after 40+ years when when we have get togethers, this is the first song we sing. Yes, it still brings tears to our eyes. One of our favorites. Thanks so much for the memories.

  • well kat, i've heard nothing but great things about your group as well as the starlets. i can't thank you enough for taking the time to comment. i'm a huge fan of '60's chicago soul, and though i've read you weren't that crazy about 'shining armour', it just may show up here soon. my thanks to all of you. you're a part of a great legacy of chicago music. j.c.

  • Sadly, Jeannette Miles passed on February 7, 2008. Services were held on Valentines Day. Jeannette was a devoted wife, a great mother, and one of the most wonderful and beautiful people I was blessed to know and love. She will surely be missed by all.

  • thank you so much for letting me know. sad indeed. it is heartwarming to know that her life was one well lived. your note is so touching, she must have been very special to you, and i know she will live always in your heart. as much as i am a fan of the music jeanette made, i'm always aware that all of these artists touched so many more lives than just thru their music. i'm sorry for your loss, and may jeanette rest in peace. j.c.

  • How do you know all of this info?? You must have been a lover of music for a long time lol.

  • the pookster reads, reads, and reads some more. i've also been blessed enough to have met or talked to many of the chicago soul artists over the years. pookie

  • But it looks much older than that.

  • The picture at :23 looks ancient.

  • come on rascal, that photo is only 48 years old!!!

  • Pookie as always love the story and slides you provide -- so Patti Labelle & bluebells did not record 'sold my heart'?

  • patti and the girls had their voices over dubbed on top of the starlets background vocals, but the lead and original dub was all the starlets. still is.

  • SWEET SOUL!!!...5*s

  • nice one pookie!!
