  • Classic from the 80's I had the tape.

  • One of Young's greatest solos-

  • In my dismissable opinion, at age sixty, there have been three great American songwriters: Warren, Paul Simon, and Leonard Cohen. I know all the American musicals by heart, and enjoy them. I adore "West Side Story." I know every song in "Oklahoma"." I was forced to sing Stephen Foster songs in elementary school. You kids will never understand what we lost when Warren Zevon died.

  • @harry21868 You only listed 2 American Songwriters, the 2 best though, Cohen is a Canadian

  • @harry21868

Woody Guthrie wasn't too shabby either

  • The Holy Triumvirate of Rock Poets: Dylan, Cohen, ... and Zevon.

  • Fan since 1987 !!

Un très grand artiste, merci pour cette video !

  • Missin' ya Warren. You left quite a mark here.

  • Neil Young plays guitar on the song.

  • I have one of those fans!

Warren was a friggin' genius... he is most definitely missed!

The VH1 special is extremely hard to watch... my dad died of lung cancer a little after he did... Warren's diary that they show throughout the show echoes a lot in the one my dad tried to keep.

R.I.P Warren and dad... both of you are greatly missed!

  • I love how he never had an empty or repetitive song, always original stuff, almost no filler for records

  • i was driving up and down the boulevard, i drove by warrens apartment building in west hollywood. very basic, nothing special but the guy who lived there was .

  • This song makes me really miss California....

  • what a musician ! saw zevon and his band at vets memorial in columbus ohio in early 80s. warren and entire band took stage wearing suits and ties. looked like something from the lawrence welk show! no bubbles in this show though, they tore the house down with as much energy as early springsteen shows. if you werent a huge fan going into one of his shows , you were going out. enjoy every sandwich!

  • The first time I heard this on the radio I said that's gotta be Neil playing that lead. Unmistakable.

  • Up and down the boulevard...Saw him when he came to play in London.

White man in Hammersmith Palice. Didn't dissapoint. God Bless a real Yankee

    Rebel.

  • this is possibly the most "american" video i've ever seen. american gothic. beautiful.

    rest in peace, Warren.

  • 2 years ago some of you read my comment from my "Rockitinmypocket," site, which is now an interview channel.

Seems like a few of you like what I had to say. I appreciate that.

Just came in from driving 'my car up and down the boulavard," and needed some sentimental hygiene,,,and to hear Neil play theat solo.

    Thanks, again, Warren.

    See you later.

    Peace.

  • This video and Sister Havana by Urge Overkill are the best videos I've seen.

  • Neil Young on guitar makes it perfect.

  • Again forgive that creep behind the curtains, that's just me playing an opinionated bastard. I used to play it for jokes but now he has taken over and I need sentimental hygiene since Warren's gone I just ride up and down the blvd .. whatever!

  • Neil Young's guitar is smooth throughout the song almost with a keyboard wash and I am hypnotized with the guitar and W's voice. I think Neil should have played guitar on all Warren's records instead of Waddy Wachtel or whatever his name is. Such an in demand guitar player! Everybody loves him but everybody should knows he is nowhere. I just don't like his sound. Yeah I will be getting hate mail. When you write me you can defend Waddy's arrest for child pornography too. OK, a cheap shot. ha.

  • Please see my amateurish effort and give your opinion. Keep tha passion, WZ forever!!

  • it has been a very long time since an artist kept me breathless all night long, why did I not know about him sooner?

  • The video elucidates the meaning of the song &, hey, maybe I don't know what it means. ha. Warren is getting clean and sober and asking that those he hurt in the past to forgive him and know they are in his heart and regrets. The guy has an overwhelming passion for relationships but at the same he needs space and to be alone and this dichotomy irks him. He sees himself and the world at large as hurting in a big tug of war (see 2 women) with over-examination and insensitivity to others needs.

  • Man, was Warren connected! Just look at the friends he had assisting him

during the recording of this album. The list reads like an allstar band that would be impossible except for Warren's extreme talent: His co-recording friends: Neil Young, Peter Buck, Bob Dylan, Brian Setzer, Don Henley, Mike Mills, Bill Berry, Michael Stipe, David Lindley, Jennifer Warnes, Flee and arrangements by George Clinton. Wow!!

  • Man this song is so good. Nice not to hear much piano and just a groove and guitar and this song just floats and a great video.

  • Who says Jews can't rock.?

  • Dave Clark 5 in and Warren is not in the Hall yet. I think the girl in the video was his real life girlfriend, for a while, Anita Gevinson, who was good DJ. Yeah and that is the great NEIL Young on guitar making this a great song.

  • @11xzxzxz Great point Mike. My sentiments exactly.

As for music that had influence on other bands, can anyone give me an example of any group stating their music was influenced by the DC5? (One of the criteria for getting in the Hall?)

How long did the DC5 last? Four, five years? The criteria calls for 25 years of ongoing music or producing other bands, simply keeping their hand in music.

I recall Dave Clark stating in an interview that the band was only in it for the money..

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @Rockitinmypocket Yeah it would be great if we knew the CRocHall of Fame criteria. And Influence on other bands would be a strong requirement but not mandatory. Longevity is less important to me or we wouldn't have some bands that just put out a few but really great CDs. It was the Jews and their love of money that allowed DC5 in. Let me talk to my media friends and I can have that reversed in a year or two. I also think the Hall should be about one-nit wonders and just great song too.

  • Zevon is definitely one of the greats, if only for his song titles.

  • Did Neil young play the lead guitar part on this one? Sure sounds like him.

Love the directness of the lyrics.

  • Enjoy every sandwich.

  • Love that Neil Young soloing! Great track off a great comeback album by Zevon.

  • This is one powerful Ballad, Encompassing our lust for life, reckless abandon and pervasive disregard for personal longevity... until our numbers called- When we reluctantly resign ourselves to seeking those things that we recall truly sustained us.

  • If you want someone who had a style all his own, WARREN was the man! We miss you Warren, mediocrity stil is the norm. Some HACK steals your piano riff for a really shitty song.(Yeah you "KID") Why do current "artists" take the easy way?

  • Warren was so different

One of the best singer songwriter of my generation!

  • Who is the chick? Who is the baby?

  • Warren was great.

  • great song..terrible video...apart from the bits with Warren :D

  • HIs daughter Ariel has an organic food store in downtown Barre, Vt. If you're ever in the area check it out. She's a hip chick.

  • Nobody could turn a phrase like Warren! Thanks for the video.

  • neil young on guitar.

  • @cosmicrider287, Thumbs up!

When I bought this on cassette, and heard that guitar while riding down the interstate, I swerved into the medium after staring at the player for a few seconds. I glanced off a car in the other lane by over correcting. The state cop said something like, "I don't think I've ever read a stranger, and more honest accident report."

He added that he was a Neil fan, but he still had to cite me.

Can you believe a car wreck turned out to be a fond memory?

    Peace.

  • don t get sentimental on me now.ha ha.quite an remarkable story there.thanks for your report.

  • A totally idiotic video. What in the hell was the director's point? Precisely what does two women playing tug-of-war with a purse mean? A guy bear-hugging a dog? What the hell?

  • 1. The quality of a music video has no correlation whatsoever with the quality of the music itself.

    2. Does it have to mean anything? I'm sure that it probably does, but Zevon (and Neil) were both idiosyncratic songwriters and didn't really care whether anyone got the point of the song or the video.

  • Schweet. Thanks to zevonandon for posting.

  • Classic Zevon..what a songwriter he was.

  • I listened to this a lot when I was reading Less Than Zero for the first time. Now they seem somehow connected, inter-twined in my memories and one no longer exists without the other.

  • HBC would have been like ten when this came out.

Great song thank you for sharing the video. I saw him several yaers ago, I wish I had seen him again before he died.

  • That dark-haired woman looks like Helena Bonham-Carter.

  • I'm sure Warren expected something good from Young, but he must have been blown away by the ferocity of Neil's playing. It is spine tingling. Zevon always had great guitar playing on his records, by himself or others. Dylan thought so much of Zevon's songwriting that he was covering his songs regularly in the shows he did during Warren's last days. Displaying his great humor, Warren was quoted as saying that having Dylan do his songs almost made having terminal cancer worth it.

  • This song has the most awesome guitar solo I've ever heard...

  • Just in case you weren't aware, the solo is by Neil Young.

  • Yes I know, greatest solo ever :-)

  • thank you. i miss him.

  • What a video-reminds one of Diane Arbus, and of course, the song is classic Mister Z. Thanks.

  • WZ had quite the knack for unique lyrics! Music lost something when we lost him...

  • love u warren

  • Kingdom Come did something called "Cant deny"

after this release, portions are amazingly similar.

I liked this album, seemed like it came out of nowhere,

& I thought ,wow.. this is Warren Zevon ? Haunting kind of tone through out.

  • Wow - I just pulled up that K. Come song and you nailed it ! Talk about lifting a song. Good call. The minute it started I thought ....Sentimental Hygiene

  • That's all Neil on the solos! Can't tell?

  • No, for sure that is Neil Yopung's pair of solos. And the band is REM minus Michael Stipe. Their next album was called "Hindu Love Gods" to try and play down Warren's name.

  • Yeah, that's unmistakable Neil Young work there. Kinda haphazard style, but man, do I love it!

  • this song is superb! is part of my dj-set of 80's hi-feeling power rock

  • Great song. WZ at his best!

  • One of my favorite Zevon songs!

  • Each time I found out a new Zevon release was avaiable, I picked it up.

At the time of, "Sentimental Hygiene," (1986?)release, we were stuck with cassettes.

Anyway, after adding this to a bag full of cassettes for a long drive, once on the road, I listened for the first time.

I was immediately amazed by the lyrics, but when the guitar solo "Hit,' I smiled, with no doubt about it being Neil Young.

Just another example of "Genius," the radio ignored.

    Thanks Warren.

    See you later.

  • @Rockitinmypocket yep, you can tell it is Neil from the first few seconds, that distorted descending riff

  • @blindriv3r Yeah, still recall that day.

Pretty amazing how Neil seems to pop up here and there, no to mention that he has been covered so many times:See, "David Bowie, "I've Been Waiting For You," if it's still on YT.

(This response is coming from my "rockinroller7," username site)

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @Rockitinmypocket I've got this tape, too. It's got a nice collection of guest musicians.

  • @cochranexyz

    Yeah,, great point.

Along with Young, there's Dylan, as well as most of R.E.M. and Michael Stipe singing background on "Bad Karma."

  • CLASSIC

  • I saw him doing an interview on a Belgian television show, after he was diagnosed with lung cancer. All I could think was Sh*t, he's not going to last long" and "Sh*t, he's having fun", laughing all through the interview as if he accepted his (all to premature) death. Warren is dead, long live Warren.

  • Thanks for posting this! I haven't seen this video in a *long* time

  • this song is awesome

  • Many thanks to Mike Wilson for explaining the Southeast Asian genesis of this very curious phrase to me.

  • I love this song.

  • This is a kick ass song. I love the guitar of Neil Young, also. I wish someone would post a stereo version on YouTube. Thanks for adding this fine song. DS.

  • Zevon is one of the greatest musicians who ever lived.

  • Agreed, of course. More than just musicianship though his greatness was his writing. The man was a poet, maybe one of the best our generation ever had. And I know I am stepping out on a limb by saying this but imho he was a better writer than Dylan. Hell even Bob would do his songs in concert and was one of the many who wanted to be a session musician on his albums. Can't get any better than that I suppose!

  • @zevonandon

I have nothing but respect for those who go out on a limb, especially when they make good to great points.

Hell, we all know Dylan does as he pleases, and it obviously pleased him to be a part of this great to one of Warren's greatest CD's, which argumentably (is that a word?) but only in the sense that no matter what any other person may consider Warren's best CD, a true fan would have to scratch their chin and say, "yeah, you may be right,,, but then....

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @artiesgrenade God Bless you for your understanding of this Genius !

  • @artiesgrenade

    Definitely agree.

That's my comment just below "Top Comments," in another life, well at least 3 years ago, when I had a 'Rockitinmypocket.'

Had to return and listen to Warrens supurb lyrics, and in this case, Neil's great guitar work.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • @artiesgrenade Sorry, I mised the thumbs up and hit the thumbs down. I'll come back tomorrow and rectify my mistake.

    Peace.
