Seems 99% of people here are sad about the demise of these once great and unique machines. More's the pity that we are not far-sited enough to realise the valuable contribution and the legacy that Big Muskie & The Captian left. We shall never see their like again!
I remember when big muskie got scrapped and I think it was not necessary for the environmentalist to interfere with any mining operation. When environmentalist interfere it could mean "trespass" on a piece of equipment without authorization. If I was head boss and if any environmentalist tried to stop me from mining coal they would be "jailed" for trespassing.
...yet all the "anti's" never squawk about their use of the resources machines, such as this bring to them: Their warm in winter & air-conditioned cool in th' summers' heat. The cloths they wear, cars they drive & bikes they ride(look at what that bike is constructed of b4 one whines about "mining"). An-nnd...the laptops&pc's required to blog on this very thread...So. Why? Ergo, the 'boss' antis are the "Root of th' Whine!" Ol' 'left'over Nazis/Eurasian socialists from WW2: USA's polit enemies!
Man, made me sick to see that boom down. I remember when this happened & as far as I'm concerned, it was a felony. Any one-of-a-kind super-size rig like this needs saved as a museum. I'm sure you wouldn't have any problems finding volunteers to maintain it. With the troubled coal market most likely never recovering from it's current slump, there'll never be another bigger one built. There are a very few which have longer booms ....... but Muskie swung the biggest bucket. So she wins the contest.
You know its our democratic dumb liberal fucked up govt politicians that destroy such beautifull things like this. It is horrible that they mandated that open pit machiney be destroyed. Thats what stupid fucked up liberals do. We need energy independance. This machuine could still be running. We need to drill in the gulf ,Amwar ,the coast of florida ,the coast of california. And shit on the liberals and enviornmentalists. If they want to ride bikes they can,I want to burn DIESEL
The picture at 00:13 isnt muskie. Its the 2570w that also worked at the Muskingum Mine. It was retired after Muskie was scrapped and it was moved to Australia.
My grandfather worked on the erection of the Big Muskie; West Kentucky steel!
R.I.P Roger Monroe. My dad Barry Monroe worked with Molub-alloy lubriacation and he monitored temperatures and serviced the lube systems the last few years the Muskie walked. My dad would like to add "I remember seeing the tanker truck sitting at the ready, full of hydraulic fluid oil because she was gonna bust a line on one of the cylinders on the walking system at any given day-----> (continued)
great vid! fantastic machine ! would love to see the bucket ! they should bo this with big geordie! kids of today will never see beasts like these again! what a loss

My grandfather retired from Central Ohio coal company. He was one of the lead mechanics on the Big Muskie. This truely was an engineering marvel and should never have been scrapped. Many times he told me he had to go out on the end of the boom to troubleshoot problems while it was operating. It was better than any theme park ride you can bet on that. He said the lead operator could flip your hard hat off of your head with the middle tooth if you were man enough to let him.
If I ever won the lottery like Powerball with an insane amount of money I would have this machine rebuilt along with the Sliver Spade and The Captain
This machine should have never been scrapped it should have become a museum or tourist attraction. The ultimate idea would be a giant excavator park where the machines like this would run and you can go into the operator's cab and move a pile of dirt or two.

Destroy ships that just ply the water yet save and immortalize machinery that rape the land...

It is such a damn shame a big beautiful piece of art work had to be destroyed! Some group could saved it and turned it into a museum!

The spreader bar off the Big Muskie is setting on a flatbed trailer in NY at Mr Winters place not to far from Buffalo. Really Sad that it's gone.

Should have been put on display. It would have been worth more as a tourist attraction then scrap steel. What a shame!! Great video Thanks!!

@charliepc56 Yeah but that company would have gotten more money to sell it for scrap then to give it to a park

They should preserve things like this, and scrap big ships that nobody cares about instead. These massive machines are part of the world's history.
