  • well we stuck our heads in the sand alright. shit what happened to us when we had these kind of american heros.

  • We'll stick our heads into the sand, just pretend that all is grand!

  • Lotsa bands wanted to be rebels back then, but St'wolf was the only one that sounded threatening. Did this song ever get any radio play? I never heard it.

  • This the REAL Steppenwolf. ALL copies of Born to be Wild and Magic Carpet Ride should be destroyed forever, and anyone possessing them should be arrested for MusicCrime!!

  • Bought "Steppenwolf's 1st" LP in '69, then the cassette in the 70s, then the CD in the 80s, and now have the album on my ipod. No matter what comes next, I will always have this album.

The part about dying at 69 in Florida is ironic to me, as I was growing up in South Florida at the time. I thought the lyrics said " ...so you may die in Florida, at the present date of 69." I thought for years that meant 1969, which was the here and now for me when I was listening to that song.

  • I spent some months in Hamburg, Germany, back in '73; my German roommate had this. The Ostrich still sends shivers up my spine.

There are few more perfect albums than Rest in Peace: & these songs weren't even the hits!

  • My Dad was an avid Steppenwolf fan back in the days when they were touring. He got me hooked as a kid, but I didn't understand the true depth of these songs until I was an adult. It's hard to believe how valid this social commentary remains 40 years later.

  • This music was so ahead of it's time and still is relevant today.

  • it kinda pisses me off that this infomation has been freely avalible for decades but hardly anyone seems to care

  • I will stand up and fight till I die!

  • To SgtPepper96034 ~ Likewise! I have a 'quarter' coin that I always keep in my wallet (along with all the other bs fiat currency). It carries some priceless advice on it...! ☼ ;-j

  • They called me when I was 6 years old. Ford was President.

  • To SgtPepper96034 ~ Yep, me too ; called up into the 'Infant Infantry' in '63. I needed it like another hole in the head ;-j

  • @SgtPepper96034 When I was 10, JFK was Prez, can't remember the guy before him, but why would I?

  • @SgtPepper96034 When I was 6 Eisenhower was prez. lmao..go get me a drink of watwer kid. lmao...sorry..i'm jus screwin with ya.

  • @TheWick53

It's fine, I'm just glad to know there are others out there that still appreciate and agree with what Steppenwolf was doing and saying. Yeah I was too young when they were rockin' the scene to understand, but my Dad always played the 7 album and I was hooked too!

  • Steppenwolf !! Relevant then and now

  • Comment removed

  • Could everyone please share this with all of your friends, associates, etc, etc. etc.??

Maybe we can wake up America...The United States!!!

  • I am 32 years old and am ever so happy to have been introduced to this band. THIS IS WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. There's a point, a message, an encouragement to better our socitey and our poor excuse for ourselves as "Human Beings". Damn strait this has every bit of meaning now as it ever did. Our governments have not changed and we are still all either asleep, have our heads in the sand or too scared/helpless feeling to do anything about it. IT's cool to see what's happening in Egypt, Lybia...

  • You're free to speak your mind my friend as long as you agree with me. It's the Earth story! Great song then and great song now! But...in today's music who is tellin it like it is?

  • @monterock100 that sounds like this "Democracy" thing we of the enlightened world are preaching. "You can have Democracy, like it or not, you will have Democracy otherwise we'll blow you to bits" Sounds a bit like what that strange Austrian/Jewish guy with the half 'tache was espousing a few decades ago. How soon we forget!

  • @monterock100

Certainly that number was telling it like it was...since I ever first heard, "The Ostrich" it made me really, then at age 21, 22 wonder what the hell I was doing with my life..have things cahnged, er not really...a great song though worth playing again.

    Disgruntled product from the sixties.

  • The lyrics of this song ring out today.

  • FOR ME IS PROTO-SPEED-METAL!!

  • I agree with 53wick!

I too am probably the same age and well the lyrics couldn't say more to me.

Do you think history could teach politicians, prime ministers, presidents to ever learn from their predessors' mistakes??

    Rock on Steppenwolf!!!!

    From a former disgruntled hippie.

  • This song is a masterpiece. WTF- AMAZING!

  • Wow...I cant help but love the face that Steppenwolf is rattling as many cages now as it was when this LP first came out....Bravo Steppenwolf....

  • This was da shit dat made all the groovy heavy music of our life!

  • "40 years you waste to chase the dollar sign so you may die in Florida at the pleasant age of 69"

  • @wildabeast11235 Well, john kay is 69...but he aint dyin any time soon!!!! Take that miami jews!!

  • @wildabeast11235 If you do the math it's one year after you retire leave school @ 18, work 40 years, dead one year later. The American Way of.... Death

  • Anybody don't like this song is sadly lacking!! I was there in those days, I was a young man and this band gave us all somthing to think about. This song i n particular was a good length ahead of all our times This was in probably 1969, It is every bit as valid now as it was then!! Just listen to those lyrics!! Tell me it isn't as contemporary now as it was then!!

  • Not far off, originally from their first album, recorded in the Fall of 1967 & released Jan '68.

Yep, it still sounds great and as you say, still as relevant as it always was ;-j

  • @53wick sounds even better ,

  • @53wick the last thing I listened to in those days were lyrics. A good riff, a new beat. To hell with words...they came out of parents' mouths. A firm breasted, tight-thighed chick was the target. A good idea maybe, but whenever I was confronted with that, I started talking gibberish and trembled uncontrollably and limped home to listen to Santana......

  • @53wick

Another good example of a John Kay song that fits today as well as when he wrote it when he was with Sparrow is "Give Me Some News I Can Use" They recorded several renditions of it, my favorite on his second solo album. I still don't know why that song never got the respect it deserved. Steppenwolf has to be one of the most under-rated bands in the history of rock.

  • @bearsbugs the first version of this song appeared on his 3rd solo albun (all in good time)

  • @unclelight actually, it's the last song on their 1st album...I still have the cassette that contains their 1st 2 albums...peace!

  • @53wick It was recorded in 67 and released in Jan. 68

  • @53wick I find much of Steppenwolf to still be quite current. No idea why they never achieved the fame they should have. Very political and very prescient. "America, where are you now?"

I did get to see them once. Great show.

  • @53wick: Late 68 and first half of 1969. As I say, FIVE excellent albums and all we hear is Magic Carpet Ride and Born To Be Wild. Both should be banned forever.

  • Behave.

  • I prefer clay pigeon shooting, .....wat ! ;-j

  • fail

  • Oooo.....yea..! "Fail" indeed....but wh@ do ya think of this here song ♪♫ ? ☺

  • I will not eat you mother

  • "Your an asinine, look that one up imbecile.

Its called a dictionary. Need a dictonary to look up what a dictionary is, here is a hint it gives elucidation to words."

u are vry annoying. stop using your big words >:|

  • 'DC'

Yea... the cantankerousness of the peremptory extrapolations of somnambulant nincompoops, whether by enjambments or not, are discombobulating nonetheless. Fukaz, eh?

    YT search: 'Earschplittenloudenboomer' ☺ Th@'s a good 'un ;-j

  • @ELGROOVER You do and you'll clean it up !!

  • @ELGROOVER

I love how you put nincompoops in there:)

  • @SgtPepper96034 ~ ;-B...lol, 'Chambers' is my friend, my friend! ☺ ;-j

  • My dad knows John and he said that he's a great guy, but way before I existed, like during the 60s, he was one guy nobody wanted to piss off. We all know that John did bad things in his life (like what u said) but he learned his mistakes.

  • Too bad he didn't learn how to sing while he was hurting my ear drums.

  • Are you always this retarded or did your skull bounce off your sister's headboard too many times last night? Look at the last message you posted. John was (is) hurting your ear drums?! THEN LEAVE!!!! :O How simple is that, you ignorant cunt!

  • No it was your mothers headboard. Then your little sisters. And I wouldn't be listening to half of it if this wasn't the music in the 60's.

  • Please do the world a favour by doing these steps

    1. Take the dick out of your mouth.

    2. Find a loaded gun.

    3. Put that in your mouth instead.

    4. Pull the trigger.

    5. Do 4 repeatedly until your skull is wide empty.

  • OoooNote you have a wonderful economy with words. I would also like to say if that is propoundment no thank you. I prefer more of say..... highbrow people. You just proved how much of a simpleton you are. Thank you for showing how utterly sophmoric you are.

  • Oooo♪

    ...easy tiger ;-j

  • Steppenwolf split up in 1973 after Norman Greenbaum was caught in bed having Anal sex with John kay.

  • Th@ sounds like 'a load of old arse' to me!?

  • uh.

    that is a liiiie!!!!

  • wtf? man keep this to yourself....damn....

  • John is an outspoken advocate of gay marriage.

He also has been arrested and convicted may times of

impersonating a singer. There are also rumors his guitar was

purchased at Wally World. You all are just wrong.

  • hashpappy where did you get that information

  • dragonclaws- I got the information here right after I posted it. Aren't you just being silly.

  • bitch im not being silly, and what do you mean by that? do you mean u are lieing?

  • It is hard to argue with a person who has no logic and is obviously close minded. That is the least of my critiques, you need to learn grammar, puntuation, sentence struture and manners. John Kay is a

    philistine and always will be.

  • hashpappy do you have a fucking problem with John??

  • You must know Johnny personally. Yes I have problem with him. What are you gonna do type in all caps or spew obscenities. What a tough guy. You an asinine, look that one up imbecile.

Its called a dictionary. Need a dictonary to look up what a

dictionary is, here is a hint it gives elucidation to words. By the by you only need one question mark moron. When you can

learn proper sentence structure, punctuation, and speak with out iniquitous tems. Then I will respond.

  • Criticizing the way I speak? Fucking look at

yourself, your the tuff boy. Open your eyes, this is the internet. I can do whatever I want. And stop coming here if your only gonna make John look bad.

  • Your speech criticizies you, I will use real small words so you guys can understand(get it). I can believe you are 19(IQ) illiterate

who probably dropped out of grammar school. This is the internet, and you are the only one entitled to an opinion. I get it(understand) now. I know first-graders that can conjugate sentences better than

you. If your daddy really new Johnny then he is as banal as you.

I know how to swear also, it just shows how much you lack grace

    and refinement. Shame on you.

  • HP, the assh@ you wear is so tight it's cutting off your brains' blood supply. It's a pity your 'cleverness' is wasted in misdirection & poor @titude.

"..lack of grace and refinement." *shakes head in disbelief* Do us all a favour HP, stop being an "Ostrich", understand 'transference', try & get out more & work on your social skills.

I don't like having to block folk (you're blocked) & I'm sorry you've got problems, but I'm not having you inflict them on other peeps here. Brighten up will ya!?

  • There may be a future for you as a 'critic' HP, but not on here on this post any longer. Too much sauce from you. You're blocked. There's enough trouble in the world without goons like you causing more.

  • ! ! *sigh*

  • #Pappy, "...impersonating a singer...etc." Th@ was funny but your predilection for disparaging others is not and is proving to be a sad shortcoming :-(

  • "behind the foliage, crouching Clansmen rise. ..."

  • Yes, I agree about about the relevance... but no (I'm not a believer) - Hope in what, change to what?? Just more soundbite nonsense...new, improved....I don't buy it.

  • one question... how is steppenwolf "dead" in 1972 when they arent retired? O:

  • They "resurrected" in 1974.

They performed a 'farewell concert' in 2007 and now describe their status as semi-retired. They're playing eight North American gigs this Summer including headlining at the Nakusp Fest. The 'wolf' may be getting old but they're still steppen....

  • I think he's a Dire wolf by this time...

Very good song, it's become my anthem after so many terms overloaded in univ.

  • He's definitely on the endangered species list...

Zombification is rife and the enlightening shot-gun blasts to the head, administered by John Kay and his kind is sadly on the wane.

  • The retirement was to get out of an onerous contract with abc/dunhill.

  • Aaah... I see, thanks for th@ info. I have Magic Carpet Ride - The Book, must make time to read it!

  • @DragonClaws6 Note that I saw them in 1974. They didn't look dead to me.

  • this song is eerily as true today as it was when they first did it.

  • Indeed, in nearly 40yrs little has changed for the better and much is worse.....still, gotta keep on keeping on.... ☺

  • ELGROOVER-What a man you are. Your wolf collection is incredible. Do you have the "My Sportin' life" Album? By John Kay .Especially the song with with the same Title. I tell my wife constantly she ruined my sportin' life. But in a positive way. We can't Thank you enough A-Dios GROOVER- you got plenty of man in you.

  • Thanks for your comment ☺ I don't have th@ album (@ the moment), maybe l@er...? Search around ; I've found the 'Moonshine' track is posted up, also 'Easy Evil' & 'Giles Of The River'.
