in NY they may be uncommon but in NJ there are black bears in all 21 counties and are very common. I live in Bergen County, there are many more bears in North Jersey than in South, but somehow the population is getting out of hand and our governor is rejecting bear hunts.
bears can smell you from over 20 miles away if it doesnt go directly after u its not interested or its not coming to eat you
