That crunch box isnt a bad pedal actually, I use the boss metal zone with the low level distortion , medium trebel, phaser through a trainor tube. It sounds just like the VH records to me.
does he use the mxr phase 90 with a pitch phaser?i think he use an octave too but i don't know, there's an octave on my vox tonelab st that sounds a little like evh when he does his dive bombs and stuff :p,but nice video
@Gibsonjunkie64 The script button makes the phase effect more subtle. In my opinion, having the script button enabled sounds better when the dial is turned up higher (else the phase effect is overpowering and too wobbly). Having the script button off is preferable to me when the phase knob is turned low b/c the script button is almost too subtle at a lower setting.
I have switched around my EVH flange putting in front of and after my MXR Distortion+...I've found the Distortion in front of the pedals sounds the best to my ears...The EVH flange and Phase both sound better using a dirt pedal direct from the guitar...
I don't have a dirty channel on my amp which is a Plexi clone....
the script is the logo its a different type of phase 90 its one from the 70s which in my opinin sounded more settle the new one with the block logo sounds more pronounced
i like the regular mxr phase 90 more. im not slamming this pedal, or saying it sucks, cuz it is a damn good pedal, but my personal preference leans on the mxr more.
Hey could you give me the measurements of the EVH Phase 90 please? I have been looking at getting one but I need the measurements of size to see if it fits on Board? Thanks
So, you need to learn a LOT about effects yet ...
EDDIE VAN HALEN used effects before distortion, because the originals 80's JCM 800 that he used up to 1994 DON'T have effects loop ... he used phase 90, flanger, delay , chorus and compressor directly to the input
He used Marshalls MKII, some ones was rebuild to have more gain, they are the previous versions of the JCM 800, but without the master volume ... He never used any overdrive pedal, it's impossible to get that level of gain of an SLP model ...
it's really impossible for anyone to say what he actually used/uses in reality. he has never been known to tell the truth about what he used in the early days.
@9balll He used JCM 800s live circa 1981 and after during the Dave era. He also used one on some of "Fair Warning" and u really can tell the difference. The intro riff after the tapped intro to "Mean Street" has the growl of a JCM 800. It doesn't sound as spongy as his usual, it has more bite and punch.
@joshua0226 i dunno man lol. it depends on all of your gear- guitar/amp/speakers/ect. i get a good early VH tone with a mahogany ibanez of mine with medium output dimarzios. but then my amp is really high gain on the lead channel.
maybe try a boost pedal like a fulltone OCD overdrive or MXR wylde overdrive or ibanez tubescreamer if your amp doesn't have enough gain for you.
@9balll hmm I have a jackson dinky im thinking about getiing evh parts and frankenjacking it up (no puns intended) I have a single channel jcm 800 with g12 celestion speakers im also saving up for an eq pedal and a les paul gibson traditional plsu
@joshua0226 hmm - i remember i had a jackson DK2M that had the duncan JB/jazz p/u set in it that got a decent VH tone a while back. i'm not sure what JCM800 you have - some of them were lower gain than others - if i were you i'd try a boost pedal first, and maybe research what p/u's eddie used back then - i want to say a duncan custom but who knows - he has his own p/u's out now i think lol. maybe try getting an EVH bridge p/u as well.
@9balll I have the same exact guitar! i have a jcm 800 4014 , Im getting an mxr eq cause ya know.. eqs are a necesity but I still dont know what od to get because fo sho I need an od for higher gain stuff
@DenKulesteSomFins haha show me the place where you got that info. because im a EVH freak. and im pretty sure he only used plexis and 5150s. plexi from 74-1990 and peavy from 1991-present
@MeewHouse I was just reading Guitar World from 1983 and they were advertising a new JCM 800 model with an FX loop. In the old days he ran a dummy load so he could use the time-based FX after the amp, essentially creating his own FX loop.
Eddie DID use a phase90!! bloody hell! I have an original MXR myself! also a BYOC phase 90! both sound the same! but the BYOC has an extra knob for more options! worth the money! all you have to do is build it :)

Eddies tone was so musical and colorful because he DIDN"T use stomp boxes. Get yourself a reissued Plexi head and match it up with a THD Hot Plate attenuator and get the distortion with your overdriven tubes instead.
Eddie used a Phase 90 on nearly every single solo on VH's debut disc. He used the MXR Flanger quite a bit, too: just listen to the beginning of "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love'. Ed's also rumored to have a used a 6- or 10-band EQ pedal in the early days, too.
Ed totally used stomp boxes. To be exact an mxr phase 90, mxr flanger, three echoplex tape delays, and a ten band eq. that just the early years. Later he started using rack mounts for chorus and in the 90's he used a wah for the first time on a record. While he did use an attenuator, that was a small part of his sound.
Maybe your using the term "stomp box "to describe a distortion pedal. In that case your right, he did not use a distortion pedal, but a marshall cranked with a variac to starve it.
Everyone knows Ed used a Flanger and a Phaser and 3 echo units. But I consider those to be effects pedals, not stomp boxes. When I said a stomp box I was implying a Fuzzface etc. Ed didn't use one of those. He got his distortion over driving his tubes with an variac instead. I wasn't dissing the MXR demo, just suggesting that using that set up then running it through a stomp box instead of a THD Hotplate or what ever would would give you a narrower tonal spectrum.
I don't understand why you don't consider a flanger or a phaser a stomp box. They are little pedals on the floor that you stomp on to activate, just like a fuzz face. Effects Pedal and Stompbox mean the exact same thing.
Nice, enjoyed it. Come upload your music to my audio sharing site SoundLantern. You can upload all your audios, i have the link to SoundLantern on my channel check it out

Sounds great with a little crunch...I was wonder if you ever switch either around and if so which way did it sound better...Thanks! Great playing1

Try putting the Crunch Box first. See if there is a diff. Instead of distorting the phase, try phasing the distortion .

ANYONE knows that phase90 must be used BEFORE distortions ...
MeewHouse 2 years ago
Absoloutly right it's like a Wah pedal. Must be first in the line and not in the effects loop for best results.

And he certainly didn't use them past '88 when he started using Solodano's, soon after he was endorsed by Peavey.
He started phasing out of the Marshall's in '80-'81 when he started experimenting with Laney's.

@MeewHouse
EVH didn't need an effects loop in his Marshall.
Here's the basic setup.
Guitar >
Stock 60's JMP model 1959 100W non-master Marshall Super Lead with Sylvania 6CA7 output tubes, CRANKED, running off of a Variac at about 90V >
Dummy load, with voltage divider, lowering the Marshall output to line level >
EFFECTS >
Solid state power amps, feeding speaker cabs.

I have that mi-audio crunch box. its so sweet. sounds better on maple neck guitars than rosewood. (too muddy).
I modded my block logo mxr phaser to be like the script logo. took out parts from inside the stomp box. it works so well now.
but that distortion pedal is the closest to "brown sound" in a pedal you can get.
