  • Maybe a little on the slow side? 6 minutes is a loong tune! :-) Wow! you switched guitars seamlessly, in the middle of the show!!

  • Been playing this song for almost 40 years. John and I have been playing it too fast. I really like it retarded like you do it. I am going to slow down.

  • very nice ! luv this song. thanks

  • Very nice job, nice sounding guitars also. What picking pattern are you using sir?

  • @Geno589 It's a modified form of the pattern used by John Prine. He got the same pattern using just the thumb and 1 finger. I'm using the thumb to alternate the bass note and first 2 fingers to play the rest. Have a look at youtube user jordanthecat's channel. He posted a couple of videos on this finger style and that's where I learned it from.

  • @rjeroots I"m totally new to this style of picking . I have watched jordanthecat's version but I just cant follow the pattern.Just learning to play at 62..lol. On a C chord for example. with the alternating bass notes 5 and 4, which treble strings are you playing after the 5 and after the 4 ? Thank you for the quick reply.

  • @Geno589 Well, squinting with these 68 year old eyes, looks like my pointer and signal fingers are picking string 5 and 6 (b & e) mostly. I just picked up a guitar and that's what it looks like up close too.

  • @rjeroots So the pattern would go, A-- B-- E--D--B--E ? I'm sorry for all the questions and thank you for your time and patience. I really like your video and want to make sure that I'm practicing your exact sequence.

  • @Geno589 I'll try. Never had to think about it like this before. First letter is T for thumb, I for index, and M for middle finger. Second letter is the string. For the G chord, I'm doing TE IB TD ME. For the Am chord, TA IB TD ME. For the D7 chord, TD IB TG ME. If this doesn't confuse you, nothing will.

  • @rjeroots LOL, didn't confuse me at all. Just the answer I needed. Now just need to practice to get it to sound smoothly. Thank you so much you are too kind sir.

  • good job!

  • Nice one man.I enjoyed your version alot.

  • nice cover.

  • And I'm 25, but I feel the song so much. John Prine was 23 when he wrote it.

  • Awesome job.

  • This is a great cover of a most beloved song. Thank you!!!

  • Thanks for sharing your gift.

  • What a nice version. Good stuff.

  • The Balladeer has the best sound and tone ! I'd say the AX and Ibanez are about equal. Nice playing ! You have your action pretty low ? A little bit of buzz on the ax.

Seasoned players usually raise their action slightly because of the stregnth they have in their fingers. It will give you a clearer sound too. Not much, just a millimeter will do !

  • this sounds awesome, 5 stars all the way!

  • From one old guy to another, thanks for posting this. Great job!!

  • nice, very nice....

  • Thank you! That was really nice. You make me want to learn the song.

  • 5 stars for the song and another 5 stars for playing an Ovation!

  • The album that this song is on by John Prine is totally an awesome album. I love all of the songs on that album and especially this song. You did a afantastic job playing this song so kudos to you my fellow musician.

  • Hello out there, Jerry.

How did I miss this video the first time around?

What a beautiful rendition of my favorite song this is!

Five stars to you, my friend!

  • sounds good man!

  • Jerry super job, love your playing, 5 stars

  • Awesome ! 5 stars

  • An incredibly lovely video and cover of this classic John Prine song. There are so many dumb and mean-spirited videos on this site that's it's refreshing and wonderful to see someone do something from the heart.

    Also- sweet axe! :)

  • You did a great job with this song!!

(NICE collection of guitars! I've got a few ovations myself)

  • wow ..that was fabulous ....nice job .!! nice ax too.... I always loved ovation guitars ....

  • JRE.... this is very INSPIRING and you've just did it PERFECTLY your way as NO ONE else can. It is your honesty and BELIEF IN what you've posting here in YouTube that's very admirable of you.

    Cheers,

    Ed
