The dust is caught in the water. We have not had any trouble with corrosion. You can buy a rust inhibitor to add to the water. It is called Plasma Quench. We set our slats on 3" centers. These can be changed to put them closer together if need be. Also, you throw a valve and all of the water disappears into the bottom chamber for easy unloading. This also makes it possible to cut aluminum on the same table because you should not cut aluminum over water do to explosive hazards.
The purpose of the water is twofold. It does help keep the plate cool, but the primary reason for it is to eliminate the smoke and dust created during the plasma cutting process.

whats about the dust coming up from the torch? whats about corosion? and where can you find small pieces?
