@jones27557 I bow to your greater knowledge. If you are the descendent of a long line of dirt poor tobacco farmers then you know a lot more about Southern culture than this Yankee. Yes, I see your point. This comedy bit was made in 1953 which was before football became the craze that it now is in the South. And a rural Southerner who had never been out of his local county and had never seen TV might indeed have never heard of football. Thanks for writing.
It's difficult to accept the idea of a man with a Southern accent having absolutely no idea of what football is. It's not as if he's a Martian fresh out of a spaceship - he's from the South, where football is extremely popular. Didn't he attend high school with a football team?
Because even today it's really just one street. It's entirely conceivable to me that, in the era that Andy grew up, there might have been some folks from up the holler who had never seen a football game.
I remember hearing this when I was about 12 when I was about 140 miles out of Galveston, Texas in the Gulf of Mexico on Sirius radio. I didn't listen to it, but When Andy talked about the "big orange drink", i knew this was the same story I heard a few years back.
Also, while the original recording makes no direct reference to a specific university as a setting for the game witnessed, the illustrations in the MAD version refer to both the Ivy League and University of Notre Dame. Due to licensing issues, this adaptation had to be omitted from the Totally MAD CD-ROM collection of the magazine's run.
@contour157 There may be no direct reference in MAD magazine to the specific university setting of this football game but there's no doubt that the setting for this game took place at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill -- home of the University of North Carolin, and of course, the alma mater of Andy Griffith.
What it Was, Was Football was printed in MAD magazine in 1958, with illustrations by artist George Woodbridge. Most of the text of the recording is printed verbatim with faithful renderings of Griffith's accent as heard on the recording; however, Griffith's original climactic description of "the awfullest fight that I have ever seen...in my life!" is moved to an earlier position in the printed version.
It's funny how the most minor things can lead you to something that you enjoy immensely yet you would never have heard it had it not been for random blind chance! I was driving home in my town in Australia and had a talk back station on i was listening to earlier as they had a sports show on.The host just dumped his 3rd prank call in 10 mins so he was forced to go to an extended break to build up enough delay...so he decided to play this as he had played it 40 years earlier when he was a DJ!

Back then he was billed as "Deacon Andy Griffith" I had this record many years ago on Capitol records. It was a 45 rpm. It was also released on 78 rpm. Nice illustrations on this, but the place was not Norte Dame, Andy was referring to Chapel Hill, NC where he attended college himself. The stadium there was then as it is now located in a nice grove of pine trees.
Maybe the illustrator or editor of MAD went to ND. But I think anyone who's attended a college football game, no matter what the school, can relate to the story.
Actually at the beginning he states they were in a "college town holding a tent service". That was the religion part........He was billed as Deacon Andy Griffith in those days.
I love Andy Griffith!
I never had a Grand Father I would be honored to be his!
His morals and standards of life I cherish...

My older brother brought this record home one day for us to listen to.
I miss my brother, he was just as funny as Andy.
God Bless Andy

I've heard this one re-done with soccer in Europe just a few years ago. That was my first experience with the story, and it carried over pretty well.
