  • I love Andy Griffith!

I never had a Grand Father I would be honored to be his!

His morals and standards of life I cherish...

My the Lord Almighty God of Israel bless him

with all that he desires! AMEN!

  • My dad gave me this 45 record (yes, an actual 45 record, the kind you played on a turntable) when I was a kid. I loved it then, I love it now!

  • I first heard this as a child (it must have just come out). I thought it was funny then, and I still do.

  • They couldn't because they kicked it the whole evening and it never busted. LMAO.

The drawings are beyond funny. And don't foregt about the convicts....

Nice, clean, humor. None of that these days.

14 people wouldn't know funny if you hit them on the head with that very same pumpkin that never busted.

  • I wonder if Tom Hanks' portrayal of Forrest Gump was partly inspired by this sketch.

  • I used to have this on cassette long time ago, thnx for putting this up, I haven't heatd this in years.

  • @jones27557 I bow to your greater knowledge. If you are the descendent of a long line of dirt poor tobacco farmers then you know a lot more about Southern culture than this Yankee. Yes, I see your point. This comedy bit was made in 1953 which was before football became the craze that it now is in the South. And a rural Southerner who had never been out of his local county and had never seen TV might indeed have never heard of football. Thanks for writing.

  • they did, and I know, friends, that they couldn't'a eat it because they kicked it the whole evenin' an' it never busted!

  • Is it weird that i'm only 16 and i grew up listening to this? i just love it!

  • One of the original rednecks. Still funny.

  • Buddy, have a drink! :)

  • It's difficult to accept the idea of a man with a Southern accent having absolutely no idea of what football is. It's not as if he's a Martian fresh out of a spaceship - he's from the South, where football is extremely popular. Didn't he attend high school with a football team?

  • @wmlfan9

You've obviously never been to Mt. Airy, North Carolina.

  • @MrJDFrog OK, I'll bite. Why is it obvious that I've never been to Mt. Airy, NC?

  • @wmlfan9

Because even today it's really just one street. It's entirely conceivable to me that, in the era that Andy grew up, there might have been some folks from up the holler who had never seen a football game.

  • @MrJDFrog Oh, OK. Now I get you. Thanks for the info. And, yes, you're right - I've never been to Mt Airy.

  • I remember hearing this when I was about 12 when I was about 140 miles out of Galveston, Texas in the Gulf of Mexico on Sirius radio. I didn't listen to it, but When Andy talked about the "big orange drink", i knew this was the same story I heard a few years back.

  • Fantastic............................

  • This is great.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • I like this a lot! It's very funny.

  • this is cool

  • A stubbed toe is funnier than Leno.

  • Also, while the original recording makes no direct reference to a specific university as a setting for the game witnessed, the illustrations in the MAD version refer to both the Ivy League and University of Notre Dame. Due to licensing issues, this adaptation had to be omitted from the Totally MAD CD-ROM collection of the magazine's run.

  • @contour157 There may be no direct reference in MAD magazine to the specific university setting of this football game but there's no doubt that the setting for this game took place at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill -- home of the University of North Carolin, and of course, the alma mater of Andy Griffith.

  • What it Was, Was Football was printed in MAD magazine in 1958, with illustrations by artist George Woodbridge. Most of the text of the recording is printed verbatim with faithful renderings of Griffith's accent as heard on the recording; however, Griffith's original climactic description of "the awfullest fight that I have ever seen...in my life!" is moved to an earlier position in the printed version.

  • I dropped my big orange drink. I did. Hilarious.

  • It's funny how the most minor things can lead you to something that you enjoy immensely yet you would never have heard it had it not been for random blind chance! I was driving home in my town in Australia and had a talk back station on i was listening to earlier as they had a sports show on.The host just dumped his 3rd prank call in 10 mins so he was forced to go to an extended break to build up enough delay...so he decided to play this as he had played it 40 years earlier when he was a DJ!

  • football would help you grow taller ?

  • some people might not know but this was on a record and i believe on the other side it had andy singing amazing grace or some gospel song anybody know? but this is what made andy famous telling this story. it has always cracked me up. lol godbless andy griffith fans.

  • You can't beat classic comedy! Thank you, Andy!

  • @BigKwell if you like andy griffith then you can buy his show on dvd. i have them all and their cheap to. lol this is the best comdey i agree with ya on that one. lol godbless.

  • best explanation of football EVER

  • When I was about 5 or so we would lip sync the record of this with several other records (please mr custer) and charge 2 cents a ticket in our garage for neighborhood kids to see our "show"

  • @blazveb

    Back when a comic book was 5 cents! I'm a child of the 80s...comic books for me were $ 1-3. : (

  • @TheProgNerd never were 5 cents.. they started at 10 cents back in 1935.. this is actually from 1958..

  • Complete fun

  • i LOVE this bit! thanks for posting it for us andy fans!!!

  • Classic....thanks for posting

  • I wish I had the opprotunity to meet Mr. Griffith. I would let him know that his home-spun wisdom and big heart has reminded me of my Dad ( 9/1923 to 9/2010 ). This was one of the first comedy recordings that I remember. I wish I could whoop-up some catfish & taters for the both of us sometime. Mr. Griffith.....you are one of the last of the wholesome commedian's left! God Bless you & yours Mr. Griffith. And thank you again for a wonderful education on life. Richard D. Bellingham,WA.

  • @nratchr great thanks for sharing

  • I am so glad they matched the MAD magazine illustrations to the piece.

  • nice job woodbridge!

  • i have this on record this so damn funny thank you for posting

  • My mother bought his record and when we got home with it I broke it. She could have killed me.

  • Nice pictures set to the classic audio. Well done.

  • From this to supporting Obama Andy I don't respect you anymore...

  • @LiberalsAreWeak

    I am with you!

  • @LiberalsAreWeak oh cmon you have to drag presidental issues into something as nice and good as this? the way i see if unless......"UNLESS!!!" you have sat in that chair, and have actually felt the weight of the USA on your shoulders. have felt the responsibility, and the conquence of your actions, no one has the right to critizie the presidents especially since it was us that have voted for him. and i don't just mean this president,, i mean all of the presidents..

  • @Saberwind45871 I didn't vote for this OBAMA Anti American SCUM BAG!

  • @Saberwind45871 So, you prove your point about contaminating this with politics by talking politics?!?

  • @LiberalsAreWeak

Just means you have a lot of hate in your heart.

  • it sort of takes something out of it when you put the punch line at the beginning.

  • I love this story!

  • Classic

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • This is real comedy!!! I had a 33 lp that had lots of these on there. I really enjoyed it when I was a child. I think it was called "Andy Griffith Just for Laughs".

  • We still have the 45 rpm of this;the other side is "Romeo and Juliet" He was called "Deacon Andy Griffith".

  • I used to have the 45 rpm of this.. I wonder how much it'd be worth now?

  • A true genuine classic!!

  • Was the illustration of Andy Griffith also included in the original article appearing in Mad magazine?

  • I am proud to say that this great man came from my hometown of Mt. Airy, North Carolina. And yes, there IS a place called the "Snappy Lunch" and "Floyd's Barber Shop"!

  • @mcaustin100 AMEN BROTHER. I've never been to NC, but there will always be a Floyd's Barber Shop up the street

  • this is a collector's item.

  • did you get these photos from MAD magazine?

  • @Viznel137

Learn to read the description. It's there for a reason dumb ass. Next time you go on a video read the description and I can almost guarantee it will answer 99% of your dumb questions.

  • I like the video

  • A worthy classic and a look at the early Andy Griffith

  • Nice B&W comic footage, could have made into a SCOPITONE!

  • Great job finding the Mad magazine illustrations, and great job matching them up to the story. Great job! Thanks!

  • @whuppy I love that mag I hope they come out with a CD ROM called completely mad that has every issue

  • i love the way andy griffith tells the story.

  • This explains so much to me!!

  • @uhohitsslowchrome and the guy below him said "cause it is". you don't like what i have to say, then don't read the comment. idiot!

  • Andy is one of a kind

  • Great video....One of my all-time favorite comedy bits. I've never seen the pictures until now. Thanks for posting!

  • It's not Jerry Clower idiot, it is Andy Griffith, I have the CD in my possession.

  • this was on an album!

  • That is a great bit. Andy Griffith is an excellent storyteller.

  • kinda sounds like jerry clower

  • cause it is

  • more talented than most people think. and aint ashamed of his "hickness". (which is a good thang). Thanks for the drawing info. Wouldn't mind hanging some of those up on my wall.

  • I laughed til I cried, and then segued nicely into a bad coughing fit. The visuals are also hilarious, esp the one of them bunchful of men "fighting."

    Excellent, thanks for posting.

  • Never heard this before, thanx for posting.

  • what it is,is football!!!!

  • I still have the album my dad brought home for us to hear back in the fifties. I'm still laughing every time.

  • MagJo Thats why its called comedy. i guarantee Mr andy knew what football is and was. Classic Skit

  • I'm Andy Griffith's 4th cousin!!!

  • A Southerner not knowing about Football?

That would never pass nowadays with the SEC.

But that was a good bit, still can't believe it was told in the 50's, good stuff Mr. Griffith.

  • Andy Griffith is a lot funnier than Jay Leno!

  • @stickdog100 Oh GOD yea!!!!

  • @stickdog100 I think I will stay with Mr. Leno, This is a waste of time.

  • @PR0Michael1 No.. you're just to stupid and jaded to enjoy it.. go watch seinfield..

  • @PR0Michael1 - If you really feel that way, I feel sorry for you.

  • Thank you for preserving this great bit of american humor.

  • @xgi36 THIS IS GREAT

  • recorded in '57; we love it in North Carolina!

  • Funny, yes, but it's also completely charming!

  • everybody where i was sitting got up and hollered..

buddy, i think i will have another big orange

  • I first heard this on the Radio! It was on a station out of Whitesburg Kentucky! I loved it then and still enjoy it!

  • It sure was nice to hear this again. My hubby has been watching guys fighting over a punkin all afternoon. X

  • LMAO

  • This time is a classic but still makes me laugh Big TIME!!!

  • After 56 years it still sounds fresh ... and Mr. Griffith is still one of the funniest men in show business.

  • AWSUME VID!

    Mooz

  • ROFLMAO on this one

  • Good clean fun!

    Luvs,

    Mooz

  • This is great!

  • Did you know that this monologue was 9th, I say 9TH on the charts in '53?

  • Buddy, have a drink..I think I will have anuther big orange

  • Simply a classic! First heard this piece in 1988 and looooooooved it.

  • T I M E L E S S !

  • they're still funny, but theyre on a different level.

    and griffith - level 99

    the rest - level 0.5

  • YesWeTan. I totally agree with you. Anyone can swear, that takes no talent, but being able to make people laugh without swearing takes an awful lot of talent. Talented people like Andy Griffith make you think. They tell stories that just seem to make you feel good. REAL GOOOOOOOOD! As Andy might say.

  • dear 1954:

this baby is pure hillbilly all the way...

and a'dont know what all 'n'..then there were these 5 or 6 convicts blwoin' whistles..."

    just a masterpiece.

  • emrrbv. You are so right. It is a masterpiece. I find myself coming back to this bit all the time. It's Andy Griffith's voice and style that of course help deliver this great bit. He's so talented.

  • I remember the old 45 of this too. It was a translucent vinyl record with an odd red color. I can't remember what was on the other side but I'd listen to both sides all the time. I grew up with this sort of humor and I can't tell you enough how much I miss it. I've never seen pictures with it before, that was a hoot! Thank you very much for posting it!

  • Romeo and Juliet, are we old or what! Sorry about the spelling, John

  • Thanks for rekindling a great childhood memory. We had this on a long lost 45 record. Even remember the original title, "What it Was, It Was Football"

  • I can remember the first time I heard this.

  • "the doctor demento show"?

  • I always did love this story...also look for Archie Campbell's Hockey story--funny stuff!!!

  • Can anyone find/post the actual video footage of this or any of the other stories from AG? I have seen clips of in on TV before, so, surely they exist somewhere?? Thanks

  • i know of the clips you are talking about,i've seen two of the stand up's on some kind of danny thomas special, when i was a kid.one was cleopatra, and the other was the discovery of america (i think thats what its called)but only seen the clips of this one.thats ok though, he tells the story so well,i can use my imagnation, and LMAO!!!"and i dont know what all!!!!!!"

  • The GREATEST soccer game EVER: *trophymanager (.) com/index (.) php?ref=580246*

  • Great piece, Andy Griffith & Jerry Clower, two great Southern Gentlemen that can make you laugh without swearing. I love this story, thank you for posting it.

    JohnnyReb {North Carolina}

  • We had this on a 78rpm when I was young. My parents used to invite friends over to sit in the living room and listen to this record. We'd laugh until we cried - never got tired of it. Thanks for the memory.

  • Funny little pumpkin! LOL!

  • What is was... was Football. I haven't heard this since listening to my grandpa's old lps.

  • Big Orange. HA HA HA!!!!!

  • This was the first 45rpm record I bought at 15 years old. I wish I still had it.

  • " A Face In the Crowd" is an awesome movie and will show you a frightening unraecognizable Andy Griffith...one of my very TOP movies of all time !!

  • EPIC!!!

  • "And I saw five or six convics running up and down the feild there" ROFL

  • He's actually talking about UNC, where he went to school

  • This was an actual experience he had?

  • very funny,i live close to where andy grew up,mt.airy n.caolina

  • Great video, Great editing and thanks Andy for so many years of laughter. Thanks for posting!!

  • That is SO funny

  • MAD reprinted this monologue in a 1958 issue, accopmanied by George Woodbridge's drawings...

  • what it was....was football....great piece of comedy by an extremely talented man...oddly enough my favorite film of his is...a face in the crowd...where he plays a real jerk...check it out if yall havent seen it

  • This was really good you did a great job editing in the pictures

  • 4:27 -- "And friends, I saw the most awfullest fight I've ever seen in my life! I did!" ROTFL!!!

  • An old favorite. We really enjoyed it.

  • i laughed my butt off

  • OK now this is a really perfect video using these illustrations to follow this funny story.

  • no problem

    God Bless

  • True non-offensive comedy...without having to lean on a gimmick or a profanity laced crutch. Jerry Clower and Andy Griffeth and Bill Cosby and Bob Newhart and Jonathan Winters...they don't make them anymore.

  • I'm so sorry! Meant to give you a thumb's up but accidentally hit the down image! Your comment is RIGHT ON! Thank you.

  • Brilliant, Andy!

  • this is great-good job!

  • My older brother brought this record home one day for us to listen to.

I miss my brother, he was just as funny as Andy.

    God Bless Andy

  • i meant to give you a thumbs up and hit the wrong one. I am very sorry

  • I memorized this a few years ago for a drama class monologue, and the entire class loved it!

    They were laughing so hard!

  • it would great to back then again

  • got to love andy griffith comedy

  • Back then he was billed as "Deacon Andy Griffith" I had this record many years ago on Capitol records. It was a 45 rpm. It was also released on 78 rpm. Nice illustrations on this, but the place was not Norte Dame, Andy was referring to Chapel Hill, NC where he attended college himself. The stadium there was then as it is now located in a nice grove of pine trees.

  • Maybe the illustrator or editor of MAD went to ND. But I think anyone who's attended a college football game, no matter what the school, can relate to the story.

  • Oh thats sooooo funny! I really enjoy Andy Griffith.

  • Good 'ol day's... PRICELESS!!

  • I love his story about Columbus discovering America.

  • I miss stuff like this

  • Thanks, I needed that. I wasn't expecting to laugh that hard.

  • Awesome.

  • A Classic, nobody does it better. Remember...1953

  • I haven't heard this in quite awhile. I've always been a fan of the Andy Griffith Show & anything he does.

  • Classic Comedy with no reference to Sex, Race or Religion

  • Actually at the beginning he states they were in a "college town holding a tent service". That was the religion part........He was billed as Deacon Andy Griffith in those days.

  • Classic Comedy with no reference to Sex, Race or Religion

  • I believe I will have another big arnj!

  • I've heard this one re-done with soccer in Europe just a few years ago. That was my first experience with the story, and it carried over pretty well.

  • Takes me back to my childhood. Thank you!!!

  • Great comedy skit.

  • One of the greatest.
