  • heh Todd. ;)

  • He is still and always will be the best. He helped Meatloaf. He fueled the much-needed rebirth of Hall and Oates. He's put on benefits for other musicians.... We are much indebted to Todd

  • Only Todd could make the mullet look hip!

  • Todd Rundgren! What can I say. The man could rock! And if you've seen him lately, you know he still can!

  • Brilliant. It’s absolutely faithful to the 24-century old original and it rocks from the first to last note.

  • Women. If you are with a soldier, stop shagging him. Seriously. Killing for a government is not, and never will be cool.

  • i remember this, i was there! he had to be the most gorgeous person on the face of the earth.... especially right around those years. perfect build, perfect voice , omg... it's so much fun to watch these thank you YOU TUBE!

  • @TheKarenpb

yes he was a true star and still is...

he freaks me out with stuff he did way back then and still now what he does, its so great

    He's a national treasure...no,a universal treasure!

And On the 8th day God created Todd Rundgren.

  • Oh Todd {{<3}} too funny

  • A anti-war rock song based on an ancient Greek play. Who else but Todd could pull it off? Plus anybody who can rhyme "Lysistrata" with "you know I gotta" has my full respect.

  • @caraphyllis Lou Reed for a start!

  • @MrSluggo666 Oh, I didn't know. What has Lou done along these lines? Or are you just referring in general to his skills and intelligence as a lyricist?

  • @caraphyllis yeah Cara just Lous' brilliance says he could, but Todd is the man as well !!

  • GREAT singing...todd knows how to strum the guitar, sing-a-along...makes me feel good all inside!! i LUV TODD ALWAYS!! he looks great and he sounds AWESOME..thanx for the video

  • why are you kids squabbling about Todd? Nazz made three records and he wrote all the songs and sang lead on only one: "You are my window" If you want I can break down his upbringing, class, education, sophisticated harmony;....or we can just let him sing his song. and calgary, one thing is for sure:Todd is doing no Useless Begging.

  • 0:49/2:56

    tee hee

    Todd.

he still to this day has that same wit and wonderful unique freakiness.

    TGFTRI !! :) looking forward.

  • Eureka! I finally found this clip. Haven't seen it since it aired. I was in the "commons" area of my dorm at Roanoke College contemplating a late nite pizza when this came on. I didn't know Todd's music at the time, but was very impressed by this song. We watched Dave every night without exception in those golden days of yore. Great performance of a great song.

  • Well I saw him LIVE a couple weeks ago and I am still spinning around like a hopeless romantic schoolgirl. ;) can't... function... normally!...lol

    OH GOD I LOVE TODD!!!!

  • omgod i love todd.

    always and forever.

What an incredible talent; human being.

  • That's wonderful. Three and half days till I am finally in the same room with Todd's brilliance ..he is the epitome of "cool" and a remarkable talent. I'm feeling the same giddy anticipation and excitement as when I first saw the Beatles on tv. ;)

  • Great song from an excellent album. Long live TODD.

  • I LOVE this performance. Bad mullet. Todd is at his best when he writes material that scratch players can play (and sing) without effort. (Not to call Letterman's Band a scratch band, but they should like the title regardless.)

  • A great album. I listen to this, and it's 1982 again.

  • chela-- if u r serious, I would help Todd in a NY minute.

  • Todd hs$ things beyond control.. Example setting up Sattelite that was supposed 2B like MTV, B4 MTV, &then dayB4 it was supposed2begin.. it let loose& Blew in2 Universe after that investment. • Todd made tons of money -- his inability to manage it isn't our responsibility. We owe Todd zilch.

    Begging for him is unseemly.

  • @musiccalgary You are a turd. Sure Todd made alot of money in the 70's, but maybe you can explain to me how he has made the "TON" you speak of in the last 30 years. The man has been ignored by the masses for the last three decades, barely keeping his head above water. It is his love of real music and our love for it that keeps him going. Get off your high horse and pull your head out of your ass.

  • @musiccalgary I'll pay,,,, for someone not bought out by the system. and you are definately in the minority in this group. TODD can do no wrong

  • @huskerbird1 Umm, well, yes... he can... or at least according to you guys... He did much wrong, i.e. he is a penniless old man begging for scraps. Nice. For dessert I get your ludicrous guilt trip. Musician heal thyself.

  • @musiccalgary He is begging? I havent seen it. Where is it? can you help? Many mental midgets have money, and many genius's have none. You must be a republican!

  • @huskerbird1

"If i'm so rich how come I'm not smart." Kiss and any other crappy bands made fortunes on the biggest load of crap in music history, and that's saying a lot when you look at the "big hair" music era. I think he sold his production rights for Bat Out Of Hell for over $800,000. I don't think he's hurting for or worries about money at all.

Since when did being rich have Something/Anything to do with artistic achievement or ability anyway?

It's Mozart vs. Salieri, sour grapes or the Grapes of Rath, take your pick.

  • @musiccalgary

    bWHAAAA what a dipstick !

  • @jimhurst53 $? ive play house of bluess bb kings ect but happiest busking the ny subway system. Where a cetain type person is not going to a certain place to hear acertain type of music. The universal aspect of music i realize on those dirty platforms. People from india who never heard a badfinger song stands and listens to a sound theyre not familiar with and are diggin it... Its a rush

  • @huskerbird1 There are very rare. At least there is some left.

  • @huskerbird1 If you knew anything about calgary you would pay no attention to this loser ,everyone there has their heads up their asses. just say ralph klein , nuff said!

  • この名曲なんでベスト・アルバムに入らないんですか?

  • "Lysistrata (Attic Greek: Λυσιστράτα, "Army-disbander") is one of the few surviving plays written by the master of Old Comedy, Aristophanes. Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, it is a comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end The Peloponnesian War."

  • Paul Shaffer & the house band... those guys rocked it w/ Todd!!

  • i would stoop to marrying erik estrada just so i could have this name.

also, lolling at that last twang. todd always gets a laugh outta me somehow.

  • I wonder how many times Todd has been on Letterman over the years -? All the performances have been just great.

  • MsToddisgod:

It would be so cool if somebody put together a Video Collection!!!

  • perfection

  • Todd like Surge on 48Hours lol...

  • P.S. Another great song on that album is "Last Dollar On Earth"........We are approaching that now.......As usual Todd was ahead of his time................Maybe he can write some new songs that keep us out of Oblivion.............

  • rushangus:

    Oops... Wrong Planet.

  • Thank you for this! I first learned of Todd and Utopia after buying the "Swing To The Right" cassette at a roadside flea market in southwest Iowa back in 1990....This is my favorite song from Utopia and I'm glad to see this performance!

  • I saw Todd and Utopia do this tune at the Philadelphia Zoo years ago. It was magnificent!! Thanks!

  • Utopia, none other, none better, no other line up does it for me but Willie, Todd, Kasim, & Roger, sorry!

  • Wow! I COMPLETELY AGREEEEE!!!!!

+ this is excellent pop music!

  • at first glance I thought it was Tom Jones

  • the most brilliant "unknown" artist of all time in rock

  • Todd is much like Frank Zappa....except he's arguably more accessible to a mainstream audience because he's always had more of a "pop" sensibility. This appearance on Letterman likely wouldn't have happened if not for Todd's friendship with Paul Shaffer, and a bigtime write-in campaign from a lot of hard-core Todd fans at the time. But as is common with Todd, he selected a rather obscure Utopia song to perform for the TV masses. Beautiful, but always underappreciated.

  • Thanks for the insights to an overlooked tallent. Except for a song or two not a commecial success. Isn't that the way it goes though. Man they were younger, just like me. How time flys.

Some day it will read: "Here lies Todd Rundgren, underated musician."

  • I totally agree. I am a huge Zappa fan and I always compare the choices both made over the years. Strange not seeing the rest of Utopia on this clip. One of my favorite Utopia tunes too.

  • He's known around here.

  • @rockwello unknown?? I wouldn't say that!!??!!

  • Beautiful

  • You can tell Todd was thinking the band is butchering this! He was doing the best he could without Roger, Kasim, and Willie.

  • Thing? It's the "A Capella" LP. :)

  • What is that "thing" Dave is holding in his hand as he walks

    over to Todd?

  • That "thing" is what us old timers used to listen to music on. Back in the dark ages, you know before PC's, IPOD's, and CD's. Man, we where so primative. It's amazing we lived so long with out all the technology. I still have all my vinyl and wouldn't part with them for the world.

  • @nemafann

i must protest. "old timers" should have been quoted in your post ;)

  • @nemafann we were cutting edge...and there for each and every advance in tech...I can remember spinning 45's in the early 70's...

  • I like Todd a lot. And, I used to know a girl named "Liz Estrada".....so there's that too.

  • man, check out how high Anton played his cymbals back then, I taped this and watched it til the tape broke, thanks to post...

  • Somewhere in my basement I have a VHS of this. Thanks for posting. Anyone know EXACTLY what type of guitar that is? I remember this being one of his faves in the late 70s-80s. It's a Fender something ... Jaguar? Squire? Mustang?

  • That's a fender telecaster; the guitar of the 50's and 80's. They got humbuckers at the neck later on. Andy Summers kind of brought them back....

  • great song.

    great play.

  • It's an ancient greek play by aristophanes and its about these women who try and bring peace by abstaining from sex. its frickin' hilarious, we had to read it in english.

  • One of Todd's best songs of all time.

  • Great song! Great performance! Todd RULES! Dave RULES!

  • I love this!, but i especially LOVE the bassists getup! poor guy! he has to live with those fashion choices forever! i'm so glad that todd rode out the 80's in black, cause he can be quite the crazy dresser himself. and, oh yes...this is a great version of a fabulous song. Todd is righteous!

  • Todd is God!

  • Moutaintop! Higher! Higher! Higher!

  • Message is still the same. Hope to see Todd in 3 days in St. Louis show. What an amazing performer. Met him once and he was a very gracious person. Rock On! Paul

  • Great song, never heard this before!

  • This is one of my favorite Utopia songs. Great tune. Great lyrics. Powerfully sung. And it has great message! Todd is god!

  • Of all of Todd's Letterman appearances, this remains my favorite...the lyrics are especially relevant in today's world.

  • If Billy Joel can be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but Todd cannot, then let Jann Wenner get below and stay below! He doesn't get any poon, and he ain't never been to war!

  • that'a an awesome comment. cheap trick deserves to get in also, whom todd also produced in 1983! lol....when i saw todd in 2003, he opened w/ this song.

  • and.. Alice Oooper

Remember this when Utopia missed a plane or what ever and Todd did the show all by himself at the Old Waldorf in SF with backing tapes

  • anton? whats with those cymbals I guess u think that looks hip, it looks? like you need a ladder

  • he looks like frankenstein with that haircut

  • Haha that's exactly what I thought!

  • Always loved this song ... he's simply a wizard, a true star!

  • I missed the screaming Gibson SG in the lead break .

  • yes, i remember being surprised at todd's choice of this song...will lee does look like he's in simple minds, but don't worry, today's fashions will look idiotic in 20 years too. another installment of the "great musicians, bad hair" series;also see:XTC's Colin Moulding(king for a day clip) & pere ubu's Tony Maimone(nightmusic clips)

  • good point about will lee. also notice how freaking high anton fig's cymbals are and look at them now... plus he plays with a fervor in this video that he has obviously abandoned for a more conservative playing style.

either way... the letterman band RULES

  • always love his voice...

and love what he does with his feet:)

  • Will Lee is an excellent bassist, but yes he does seem to need an image consultant ! thanks for the post!

  • I remember this broadcast. I was so blown away that he chose to play this piece. I've always loved it but never expected it to get national airplay.

  • one his best under-rated songs. Thanks for posting. Will Lee looks ridiculous.

  • Oops wrong year! This was shown in July 1986.

  • Corrected! Thanks!

  • ...and Anton Figg on drums! :o)

  • GREAT SONG AND VIDEO...thnx BLANCOTRONCC

  • Todd is Godd

  • omg, professor gave me this link, wtf mate?!

  • Who on earth is that band?? No one I've ever seen with Todd.

  • They are Paul Shaffer & the Late Night Band.

  • Will Lee, the newly aquired guitarist, ex-Peter Gabriel (still with the band)and Dave's current boys. Oh, no girl yet!

  • Love this!! Todd should play the lead break tho... Saw you in Liverpool, England. Best gig ive seen in years.
