Eureka! I finally found this clip. Haven't seen it since it aired. I was in the "commons" area of my dorm at Roanoke College contemplating a late nite pizza when this came on. I didn't know Todd's music at the time, but was very impressed by this song. We watched Dave every night without exception in those golden days of yore. Great performance of a great song.

Thank you for this! I first learned of Todd and Utopia after buying the "Swing To The Right" cassette at a roadside flea market in southwest Iowa back in 1990....This is my favorite song from Utopia and I'm glad to see this performance!
Todd is much like Frank Zappa....except he's arguably more accessible to a mainstream audience because he's always had more of a "pop" sensibility. This appearance on Letterman likely wouldn't have happened if not for Todd's friendship with Paul Shaffer, and a bigtime write-in campaign from a lot of hard-core Todd fans at the time. But as is common with Todd, he selected a rather obscure Utopia song to perform for the TV masses. Beautiful, but always underappreciated.

That's a fender telecaster; the guitar of the 50's and 80's. They got humbuckers at the neck later on. Andy Summers kind of brought them back....

good point about will lee. also notice how freaking high anton fig's cymbals are and look at them now... plus he plays with a fervor in this video that he has obviously abandoned for a more conservative playing style.

I remember this broadcast. I was so blown away that he chose to play this piece. I've always loved it but never expected it to get national airplay.
